Show your Dr. Who props!

Finally, I managed to buy myself a Helix Home File! This metal filing cabinet in briefcase form, complete with it's drop down front panel, was used to create the TARDIS toolkit box, as it appeared in "Earthshock" (and possibly a few earlier stories).

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

First off, I love that I'm posting on page 42.

Now, I am blown away by all the amazing props you all are posting. I'm new to this site and have wasted(?) so much time just scrolling through build after build. Figured I might as well share some of my work too. So here are some shots of my scratch built T.A.R.D.I.S.
I too am blown away by the other props. My work seems rather amateurish compared to what I've seen, but I'll post some of what I've been doing to put together a scratch built model TARDIS that I've been working on since mid-2010.

I've never had the motor skills to do really fine/detailed work by hand, but I am reasonably proficient with design software, and I have a good sized LASER cutter/engraver in my workshop.

Last year, I started a topic on the project, but real life got in the way, and I haven't had a chance to come back and update the topic. When I get a chance to take more photographs of the earlier designs, I'll do a full update.

In August 2010, I downloaded the CorelDRAW file for a series of Shoji Style Tea Lights from Thingiverse. I cut out and assembed a few of the tea lights.

As I assembled the tea light, I realized that with a bit of redesign, I could turn the design into a TARDIS.

The early TARDIS models were pretty ugly (the proportions were wrong and the external clips were hideous), but ugly as they were, they served as good learning tools. Here's how the very first one looked:

As I reworked the files over the next 2 weeks, the design progressively improved, however it took a total ground up redesign to fix the proportions and the clip issue. Here's the first of the Shoji based versions with the first of the ground up redesigned versions:

3 weeks later and after some detail and assembly changes, here's how it looked (set of 3 ... freshly cut 1/8" Masonite sheet, still on the LASER, assembled but unpainted model, and a painted colour test model).

As they are in this shot, I can cut out a full set of parts from a single 24" x 12" piece of 1/8" thick Masonite in about 30 minutes of LASER time, and assemble the freshly cut pieces in about 5 minutes. The pieces fit so well, that it doesn't need any glue or fasteners.

Every now and again, I revisit my files, and do some tweaking, but changing the roof design from a flat piece to a sloping design has slowed me down a bit. Cutting and assembling the roof pieces on the LASER required a number of custom jigs to be made. Here's an early test of a sloping roof model beside an older flat roof model.

I was pleased with the results from the cutting and assembly jigs, but the roof design itself was not right. I have started again with a redesign of everything above the "Police Box" signs.

The LASER has been out of commission since we moved house, and I've been a little hampered by a lack of a suitable place in the house to set up my workshop. The garage and shed at the new house are just too cold and dusty for the LASER's health, and the necessary exhaust ducting has proved to be a problem inside the house. As a result, I've yet to make the new cutting and assembly jigs for the new roof, so it's still a work in progress.

Re: How much WHOvian are YOU..vian.......?lol

Currently I haven't much to show off. From time to time I am falling in love with tiny things, sometimes even not related to Doctor Who alone. For example the "wing chair" standing in the Black Hawk Archive ("The Day of the Doctor") - you don't know a place to purchase such a wing chair?

"We could be heroes, just for one day!"

Tom Baker (aged 60) and Mark Quested (aged 17), August 1994.

Most of my replica props (sans scarfs, White Pointed Star diamonds, Helix Home File, Time Lord psychic cubes, some odds and ends such as marbles, etc).

A collection of impossible things:
- My Doctor Who pocket props

"It's a mistake to clutter one's pockets, Harry..."

Way back yonder in September 2003, when a televisual revival of Doctor Who was akin to a written recollection of a dream in a gentleman's journal of impossible things (but in reality was only days away from being announced by Lorraine Heggessey), I began collecting Doctor Who inspired pocket props. My first two were a non-working metal Sonic Screwdriver and a pewter TARDIS key from The Who Shop in London.

Ten years on, and my collection has grown since those humble beginnings; helped considerably by that sixth dimension more commonly known as eBay.

"...Never throw anything away, Harry!"

The Doctor’s affects – replicas and likenesses:

3-D movie glasses (3-D movie glasses, as worn in a cinema whilst watching a 3-D film. The Doctor uses these to observe alternate-dimension residue as well as other time-space phenomena that are not usually visible to the naked eye. Several pairs).
Banana (Bananas are a good source of potassium. This one is from the groves of Villengard. Bananas are good!)
Books; several different types:
"Juggling for the Complete Klutz" by John Cassidy and B C Rimbeaux (1984 edition of the book, as used by the 7th Dr in "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy").
"The Time Machine" by H G Wells (1931 limited edition by Random House, the same hardback edition as read by the 7th Dr in the 1996 TV movie series pilot),
"The Doctor's Dilemma" by George Bernard Shaw (the same paperback edition as read by the 7th Dr in "Delta and the Bannermen"),
"Melody Malone" (a replica of the novel that the 11th Dr reads whilst in New York with Amy and Rory).
Calling card (a homemade replica of the 7th Doctor’s calling card; not entirely screen-accurate, but suitable until I get around to making my own one).
Catapult (useful for lobbing gold coins at Cybermen).
Cricket ball (high quality, red English cricket ball).
Diary, The Doctor's (replica of The Doctor's diary, as used by the 11th Dr; as new with crisp white pages).
Diary, The Doctor's (replica of The Doctor's diary, as used by the 11th Dr; blank artificially aged pages inside to allow me to add what I want inside).
Etheric Beam Locator (also useful for detecting ion-charged emissions. But in reality, a Varian Klystron VA220 valve used in microwave transmission equipment; one of these was used as the 4th Dr's Etheric Beam Locator in Genesis of the Daleks).
Everlasting matches (waterproof/windproof matches and strikers, being used to mimic the everlasting matches used by the Doctor in some of the novels).
Folding camera - Zeiss Ikon Nettar 515/2 (a German-made photographic camera, circa 1938. It looks cosmetically similar to the camera used by the 7th Dr in "Remembrance of the Daleks". It may not be the same model, but there are plenty of similarities, which makes me assume that the camera used in the story was a Zeiss Ikon Nettar. I have two of these; one is seemingly in a full working order and comes with original instructions, original paperwork circa 1938/1939, and a carry case. The other one is in a good cosmetic condition, but the timer does not work).
Handkerchief (fancy-looking, cotton handkerchief, in a Paisley style that is remarkably similar to the one carried by the 7th Dr).
Jammie Dodgers (2 replica Jammie Dodgers).
Jelly babies (several bags of the confectionary that is much favoured by The Doctor, as well as a pack of small paper bags).
"Journal of Impossible Things" by John Smith (fan-made full size, leatherbound replica of John Smith's journal of dreams, as seen in Human Nature).
"Journal of Impossible Things" by Verity Newman (a replica of the fictional book, as seen in The End of Time).
Juggling balls (multi-coloured juggling balls).
Library card (screen-accurate replica of the 1st Dr's Shoreditch Library card).
Loupes (jewellers loupes of varying magnifications, such as 2.5x, 5x, 10x and 12x).
Magnifying glasses (replicas of 1941 Hughes and Son magnifying glasses; two large and two small. They come in their own leather pouches. I also have a couple of more modern style magnifying glasses).
Marbles (a bag of glass marbles, various colours).
Money in drawstring bags and/or wallets (various methods of making payment including coins of varying currencies and eras, inter-planetary credit chips, gold coins, silver coins, gold dust, uncut diamonds, cut diamonds, gold rings, gold rings encrusted with gemstones, gold pendants, gold pendants encrusted with gemstones, precious cut gemstones, astral diamonds, and Alliance credits; inside various drawstring bags).
Nano Recorder (toy replica of the gun-type Nano Recorder, as used by the 11th Dr).
Opera glasses, three types:
9th Doctor style Opera Glasses (three pairs; 1800s Fords Theater replica pair, 1941 W Ottway and Sons pair, and another pair of an unknown European origin),
11th Doctor style Opera Glasses (one pair; late 1800s / early 1900s French pair by La Mignonne),
Paint palette brooch (a replica of the 4th Dr's paint palette brooch).
Pen torches (a couple of pen torches that share a striking resemblance to the pen torch carried by the 4th Dr and seen amongst his affects in the story "Genesis of the Daleks". I also have four more pen torches that slightly resemble the 2nd Dr's Sonic Screwdriver).
Playing cards (playing cards).
Pocket watch on a chain (several pocket watches; three plain gold-coloured pocket watches with gold chains, one patterned gold-coloured pocket watch with chain, three “Victoria Penny” silver and copper coloured pocket watches, and several other silver-coloured pocket watches of differing styles).
Psychic paper inside a black passport wallet (a leather replica of the Doctor’s black passport wallet, containing a piece of psychic paper).
Recorder (a recorder styled and painted to look similar to the 2nd Dr's recorder).
Scarfs (two replica 4th Dr season 12 scarfs; one unofficial and purchased from Galaxy Four, the other is the official replica by Lovarzi).
Stethoscope (medical instrument, commonly used to listen to heart and lungs, but equally useful for listening to other sounds such as fury from the deep).
Sonic Screwdrivers, several types:
2nd Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (i.e., pen torches).
4th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (metal replica with working spring mechanism, but no sound),
4th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (metal replica with working spring mechanism and sound chip inside),
4th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (several toy replicas, with working spring mechanism and sound chip),
8th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (metal replica with working spring mechanism, but no sound),
9th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (professionally produced replica, with working light and sound chip),
9th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (several toy replicas, extendable, light and sound effects, etc),
11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (several toy replicas, extendable, light and sound effects, etc),
The other Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver (several toy replicas, light and sound effects, etc),
Several of the build your own Sonic Screwdriver sets,
Several of the Trans-Temporal Sonic Screwdriver.
TARDIS De-Materialisation circuit (a professionally made replica of the TADIS De-Mat circuit, as seen in Day of the Daleks).
TARDIS Food Machine 24 hour food ration - flavoured food bars (I obtained several of these from old Royal Air Force and Royal Navy survival packs. They are packets of 8 qty cubes of flavoured carbohydrate food, such as chocolate and fruit flavours. Vacuum sealed in laminate foil packets, they closely resemble the TARDIS Food Machine food blocks).
TARDIS key on a chain, three types:
3rd / 4th and 8th Dr types,
7th Dr type,
Yale-style type, as used by the 9th, 10th and 11th Drs.
Telescope (extendable, brass telescope, bound in leather).
"S&G - The Doctor: here to help" badge (replica of the shop assistant badge worn by The Doctor in "Closing Time").
Torch (vintage Ever-Ready torch, as used by the 4th Doctor in The Robots of Death).
Yo-Yo (a Yo-Yo is a toy that was used by the 4th Doctor to take “…a simple gravity reading”).

Related affects:

Alien translator (a replica of the Alien translator from the Sarah Jane Adventures).
Diary, River Song's (fan-made replica of River Song's diary, as seen in Silence in the Library; it contains replica pages of notes, photos, drawings and inserts; aged to give it the same appearance as the one in the story).
Diary, River Song's (fan-made replica of River Song's diary, as seen in Silence of the Library, but with blank artificially aged pages).
Diary, River Song's (fan-made replica of River Song's diary, as seen in Let's Kill Hitler. As new, complete with red ribbon tied around it).
Golden Shield model 7186 - six transistor radio (a six transistor radio, circa early 1960s; the same radio as listened to by Susan in "An Unearthly Child").
"Sounds from the Inferno" - 7 inch vinyl record (a limited edition vinyl record published in the UK in 2013, featuring Three Giutars Mood 2; the instrumental that doubled as John Smith and the Common Men in "An Unearthly Child").
"The Runaway Bride" banknotes (one David Tennant and one Philip Collinson banknote, as seen in "The Runaway Bride". I've no idea whether they are genuine or replicas, but they are professionally printed on quality paper).
Time Lord psychic message cubes (two replica message cubes; one with the snake design and one with a Time Lord seal on it).
White Pointed Star (replica of the White Pointed Star diamond).

Other relevant collector's items:

Casio AE-21W Twin Graph ii digital watch (this vintage digial watch is the same make and model as used by SFX artist and props maker, Mike Tucker, for the 7th Doctor's digital pocket watch. I currently have two of these in a working order, which I am keeping as collectables).

Pocket watch on a chain, rabbit hunter design (I have two gold tone pocket watchnes of the rabbit hunter design. SFX artist and props maker, Mike Tucker, used one of these pocket watches for the case of the 7th Doctor's pocket watch. I also have the silver tone snake pocket watch chain that Mike also used).

Viners Studio salad serving spoons (two sets of salad serving spoons, including two fork spoons of the same type that were used to make the alien-looking spoons "pilfered" by the 7th Doctor in "Time and the Rani").

"Zoids" toy - Saicurtis (this is the same Zoids toy that was used for the construction of the 7th Doctor's very valuable piece of coin collection in "Battlefield". I have two still in kit form and in their original boxes).

Soviet Union badge (same as Captain Sorin's badge in "The Curse of Fenric").

Helix Home File (briefcase filing cabinet, as used for the case of the TARDIS toolkit).

One of these days, I'll take some photos of them all and upload them!

Nice stuff!:lol Wow

And Tom Baker....VERY cool.

EDIT: Okay.......somebody merged my thread into the "Show your props" thread.......it WASN'T about props. It was how much has Doctor Who leaked into your LIFE? As in home decor, bathrooms, etc. Painting your house blue or something. Totally missed the point.

You probably need to start a new thread in the off-topic discussion section.

Ah, so it didn't have anything to do with props, but it was posted in the prop forum... not sure who missed the point. ;)

Seriously though, we have split your post out and moved it to the OT forum.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Made another yo-yo discovery recently, this time the one used in "Robot" from Season 12. I wasn't really even looking for it but I never deleted my saved search for the lumar yo-yo and saw this in an email and recognized it. Which means the Fourth Doctor favored Lumar yo-yos, apparently.

In "Robot" there is a scene when Tom empties his pockets and you can see a light blue yo-yo with what appeared to be a duck on it. It looked like Donald Duck to me and it seems this was indeed the case when I found this Disney Lumar Yo-yo. It doesn't hold as many memories for me - nor is it as nice - as the yellow Lumar but none-the-less I thought it was too fun to pass up since I am also rather fond of Donald Duck.

Here is it in a sort of Fourth Doctor Season 12 Collection pic

And here is the screencap from Robot with the front and back of my Lumar.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Speaking to the Fourth Doctor and props, my signature edition of the Big Chief Studios Fourth Doctor 12" collectable figure arrived a couple of weeks ago. I am keeping it in its original box as a collectable.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

My Cyberman prop. I bought it many years ago, I have to say it's the most beautifully finished off replica I have ever seen.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Isn't that the Cyberleader? My favourite cyberman (and possibly my favourite classic villain next to the Delgado Master). Absolutely awesome replica!

I believe it is yes. It's a truly stunning replica, the photo doesn't do it justice. I was told it came from one of the Doctor Who exhibitions but have no reason to think it did. It's flawless. I have nearly parted with it on three occasions but its such a fantastic, beautifully finished prop in every respect that I've never actually been able to bring myself to let it go. :)

Can someone be kind enough to advise me on what type of "clear green paint" you use for the Mooncrest Models Demat Circuit ? I've never heard of clear paint before and have no idea what to look for. Thank you :)
