ROGUE ONE Jyn Erso - open build thread!

These are just marvelous! Did you 3-D print them?

Yes I rendered them up in six pieces so they would all interlock as a kit. Then 3D printed, then smoothed up with some light scuffing for battle damage/worn in look then molded them and cast in black plastic resin. Kinda expensive but I got what I needed which is the main thing [emoji4]

Also, Jyn's undercover Imperial Ground Crew look, has anyone heard anything about a sculpt/vacuform/mass produce of the armor pieces? So far I haven't seen any mention from anyone yet, just some scratch builds.

Thanks!

Not that I've heard of, but there's another thread for her imperial disguise costume. Someone might be able to help you out there!

You look great! Your droid caller looks especially good. How did you make it?

Thank you! I made the droid caller out of a flashlight and what I think is a funky damaged rubber bushing that I found in my garage. We work on our cars in there so I'm guessing it came out of one of them being replaced during a job? I honestly don't know what it's from but it had the look. So I used E-6000 to fill up the center of the bushing and glue it to the end of the flashlight after removing the battery cap and batteries, then painted it with semi flat black and hammered silver spray paint. The flashlight is a cheap little led one from amazon that I already had that's about the right size and has a clip. Similar to this.

I ordered this pattern and I want to give everyone a heads up. The pattern is nearly impossible to print out correctly. Every printer, no matter how you set the margins, etc. seems to print it differently. I tried three times on two different printers. I went with the most accurate of the three attempts but I still had to fill in missing lines and readjust seams to make it work. It also does not come with seam allowances so it has to be copied onto another piece of paper to make a complete pattern piece. And the directions are pretty undecipherable. I am going to have to call the company to ask what various words and techniques mean. This is coming from someone who has a degree in fashion design. I have not made up the muslin yet because I am still reworking the patterns. I just want to warn people who aren't experienced sewers and pattern makers that it might be a struggle to us this pattern.

I should have said I was referring to the Lekala pattern 5485.

I should have said I was referring to the Lekala pattern 5485.

I had a feeling it would be pretty difficult -- and maybe only a step up from drafting my own pattern, but didn't realize it would be that bad. Maybe that's why I've been putting it off so long?

So after looking at every image of Jyn's vest I can find, it looks like the back is/was quilted not in the strange pattern we think, but is more likely quilted into 5 rows, all the way across, probably in 2" squares, but over the course of filming some of the quilting lines came undone.

Starting with the Disney kids' costume ( I know...) you can see their very basic design of it, then if you look at a lot of the pics of the back of the vest im some there is a very defined top and side lines, you can see the quilting going all the way to the sides.

As the for the different sizes squares in the vey center of her back, that is most likely because there is a piece of elastic in the back, stretched ever so slightly. This was done on old military gear to give it a better fit. That is why the center squares appear to be irregular sizes, and why in some side pics you can see the vest pull away from her back in the center.

Also, you can see that the batting extends pretty far past the quilting line on the top and is decently thick; probably 2 layers of the generic rolled polyfill sheets of batting you can get at like JoAnnes. You can see this best in the pic on the mannequin from the display

Also it definitely does have a tab collar on it, that looks like it is one rectangle of fabric that is folded in half, NOT two pieces stitched together, then flipped. It's probably top stitched on like a men's dress shirt collar after the front and back of the vest are already assembled.

You can see that detail best in the Entertainment Weekly headshot:

Also, we can see here on her left side of the vest that there is indeed a red lining as someone already previously pointed out, but there are more greebles on the inside.. is anyone planning on actually adding this feature? I think I might skip the inside greebles and just focus on the ones on the outside. [EDIT] it looks like it lines up perfectly with the tubing on the outsie, is it possible that it wraps through on the top? Could this be true for the other side as well?

Any luck IDing the greebles used on the vest? i reached out to The Parts of Star Wars and they said it definitely looks like a black 4-conductor ribbon cable, but I'm not sure about the pieces they put on the ends of them to attach it to the vest. Thoughts on this

On her right side the little nubbin' below the wire greeble is definitely the male end of a glove snap like this: http://www.zackwhite.com/Line-16-Glove-Snap-Nickel-Plated-Snaps-1000-Pack_p_3747.html
