Re: Free Paper Prop Thread #4 - 2009

Can anyone help me with my quest:confused

I'm trying to find a good version of the US Robotics logo from the stationary used in iRobot. Just before Sonny makes his sketch, it shows some good shots of several USR forms containing the logo and address.

For the address, I can make out 1001 West ..?.. Avenue Chicago, Ill

My screen-caps aren't good enough to make out the whole thing.

I was hoping somebody out there might be able to help me,and whip up a really good version of the logo and address. I would try myself, but am pretty useless when it comes to creating anything(especially on a computer:cry)

Here are the best screen-caps that I could get

Re: Free Paper Prop Thread #4 - 2009

Wow Cmdr. Kerner. Always been amazed at your BSG paper props. Got me thinking though about an idea. The paper prop threads are probably the most popular threads on the RPF. I bet there are a lot of members that come to the thread and want to do their own paper props, but like me there are not familiar with image editing, vector, all the techniques that you fine paper prop experts use. So what I was thinking was that we should create a tutorial thread. I'm not saying to give out all your best secrets, just sort of a beginners guide to taking a screencap of a paper prop and making it viable for printing. We all have varied tastes in movies, and most of us probably could think of a paper prop no one has done before. I'll bet if more of us knew a little more about making paper props, the posts would skyrocket even more. Just a suggestion, what you guys think?

Thanks Alucardez (I like your username ZeDracula backwards),

to write a tutorial in English would be quite difficult for me, because I use the German version of CorelDraw12 (English is my second language, Klingon my third!!!) and I have no idea how the buttons, effects and so on are named in English.

But I can tell you this: After making a screen shot (in this case a business card) I import the image in CorelDraw and cut straight at the edges, export the image as jpg in low (100 - 150 dpi) resolution in a folder and import the jpg in CorelTrace to vectorize the image.
After that I import the vector file in CorelDraw.

In Draw I create guidelines of the size of a typical American business card (3,5" x 2") and with the help of the "perspective tool" I pull and push the file until the corners of the card match with corners of the guide lines.

Than I start looking for the right fonts, colors (maybe) effects, graphics and redraw the business card until I'm satisfied.

Usually the hardest part is to find the right fonts, I've got about 2.500 different ones well organized in a folder on my HD. But many of them are really similar and you have to look for details.

Exactly the same I do with ID card and logos.

Hope that all makes sense to you.

Cmdr. Kerner, I am a great admirer of your work. Especially the BSG stuff right now. I also apreciate your Star Trek props.

Here is something I worked up on my own. In the original folder they had Adama's medical report with some scans just on white paper thrown in. I thought it looked cheesey.

Hope you like.

Best,

Sorry, having trouble linking to my pic on Photobucket. Not exactly sure how to do it. Help???

Thanks Chris,

you're very welcome. To be quiet honest, I couldn't do it better, you did a great job. The link is working OK for me.

Greetings from Germany

Hey Dietrich,

yea i like my name too. You can call me Ed though. Thanks for the tips, I wasn't implying that you had to or should write a tutorial, I just meant with all the talent we got here, that a tutorial could be put together. There are a lot of talented people here, You, Jedifyfe,Ramiel, and TazVader. Although i do have to say you have contributed by far the most stuff in the paper threads.

Thanks Ed,

take a look in my online gallery http://cmdrkerner.deviantart.com/gallery/

You'll find a lot more graphics I made over the last 7 years, but some simply don't belong here.

Here are my free fonts: http://www.dafont.com/dietrich-kerner.d1242

and here my vector files which are quite useful for ID cards and more:

Keep on trekking

Re: Free Paper Prop Thread #4 - 2009

I am so happy to have caught this thread near the beginning! I always find the paper threads after they are 1400 pages long and many of the images are no longer linked, etc.
Cool stuff!
I hope I can find something to contribute
