POTC - On Stranger Tides Costume - Tweaks and Upgrades!!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig and Costume WIP 9-16-10

/\ Me too! Me too! Not having much luck on the wig side! Going back to the drawing board on the base wig!!!!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig and Costume WIP 9-28-10

All pics are clickable because I was too lazy to resize them!!

So let's just start out by saying that scratch building the OST wig is PITA!!! One - It requires ALOT of hair colors (six at my last count), TWO - The ability to blend colors if you are using human hair OR synthetic, and THREE - The NEED to use synthetic in some areas because you can't find human hair long enough to make some of those very, very, very long braids that hang from the top of the head all the way down to the waist!!

So I first started out with three wigs and finally got it down to this wig! 100% human hair dark brown with blonde highlights!

There were not enough blonde strands so I added four layers of blonde to the back of the wig. Two were straight blonde and the other two were blended. This way the tips of the hair and the middle of the ponytail would appear "sun-kissed."

Next came the placement of the three dreadlocks in the ponytail. Most images showed three dreads coming off the top of the head and one braid that appears on the left side and apparently dangles down the left side of the waistcoat (that I can see...please anyone chime in if they think different before I apply said braid!!) The dreads are hard to see but I didn't feel like going back to make changes to them because once the ponytail is assembled it will become permanent. I don't mind if small frilly hair comes out because that is the look now. Very messy!

Also the long dreads appear to hang down from the ponytail so I added a little bit of length to them and blonde blended ends.

Now the side ponytail was also built up from added blonde hair weft that was blended AND the wig hair. I still need to buy a curling iron to make these pieces wavy as well as some of the blonde ends on the dreads. I think it stands up a little too much but that can easily be fixed once the bandana is worn. Jack's new side ponytail definitely lies flatter than previous wigs. Once the blonde parts are curled slightly they will show through better AND I will blend the darker hair to and make it a bit shorter.

Now onto the dreadlocks. Again this wig has very distinct dreads which makes it fairly easy to count. Here are the right side dreads and their distinct personalities (meaning the ends or greeblies)

Seven on the left, six on the right, and ten in the back. I haven't yet finished the last two on the right and I am randomly working on the back dreads (two of which have wraps and one that has a bone doohickie thingie on it). I am running out of blond hair and I need some wider leather wrap for two of the darker dreads on the left side.

The workshop! The wifey is constantly complaining when I will get it completed! It is actually creepy having these things dangling about when one is sitting upon the Cannibal thrown!!!

Just added the bandana to make it feel like I am making some progress. Not much time left and I still have to hang greeblies!!! Dread installation tonight!!! Now off to pick up some blonde Afro kinky hair! Found some locally up hear in Pasadena!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig(80%) and Costume(Belts) WIP 10-4

Well the "beast" is at 80% completion and I have 4 more days to complete it AND hope a clear picture of the wig back from the UK will appear! I also need to add the three two braid spiral lengths (two on left side one on right side) AND add a few more very fine and thin braids on the left side.

Majority of the visible dreads have been added.

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig(80%) and Costume(Belts) WIP 10-4

Almost there..............almost there.............ALMOST......!

I added all the braids last night aka non-dreadlock hanging thingies PLUS some of the greeblies now that I know where to place them. Dreads for the back are done and they just need to be placed. I ran out of blond hair so now I need to get some MORE to finish up the "sun kissed" look on the back dreads. 11 for the back!!!

I think for the coin on the left side I am going to use the Balboa since that was fairly prominent on the DMC/AWE wig and it looks like it is about in the right area (even though we can't see the front)

For the coin on the back I think it has a very pixelated hole in it from recent pictures so I am going to use my real Dutch East India coin circa 1930s which is nice and vertigreed!!!!

The wig!

Forgive the girliness of this statement, but your wig is so pretty!

Seriously though, it looks great. Keep up the good work, sir!

Looking great! With all these JS threads I think I have the bug now! Keep up the great work!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig(80%) and Costume(Belts) WIP 10-4

Very nice, where do you get all the time to do this. Been trying to make my own wig but between the waistcoat and frock coat I am making there is just no time for the wig, going to have to use my old standby.

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Wig(80%) and Costume(Belts) WIP 10-4

Well all I can say is that this wig was a labor of love. When I look at it I hear the opening narration sequence of Disney's animated classic Beauty and The Beast!

"............but who could learn to love.............THE BEAST!"

Now to figure out how to put the flipping thing on!? I may need to get some berets to hold this bad boy in place!!

Ponytail:

The back dreads are not 100% SA and were developed using several different LO RES and partially blocked images so some of the wraps are correct. I have been informed that there are many, many, many more greeblies hidden away in that hair and many of the parts are very unusual and hard to find!!!! The quest begins!

Greeblies back:

Greeblies front:

Remember that old tricorn from four years ago I told you about? Not very SA and the bowl was too shallow so it fell off all the time? My firs tricorn ever? Well I gave it a new bowl (not the best but what do you expect for a 48 hour turnaround modification!) and a new French Edging after removing the edge stitch and adding the leather edge. Darkened it up a bit and smothered it in Mink Oil!

With zombie finger:

Displayed with pirate wares!

Here are the two items that have caused me to loose ALOT of sleep since January 2010 began....no not my kids!!! My two evil step children!!!

Amazing, Capn Jack! I'm so impressed with your work and research and just have to say keep up the great work and keep us informed.

My latest additions. SA conchos for my baldric. Working on the new baldric with the actual pattern from the movie. More leather crafting to go!!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

The madness continues! Bandana dangle version 2.0!!

Cast from real human finger bones and painstakingly detailed to give it that fossilized / weatghered / old look. The texture was than transferred to the master molds. Updated the bead from an existing bead and modded the top and bottom to lengthen the overall size. Also modded the tooth thingie slightly. The overall length is about 1/2 inch shorter than my previous version.

Thanks to many new HI RES screengrabs from various video clips!

Old and the new. End of line for the old version but also because the first molds have been really abused!!!!

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

so can some one please tell me where i can get dreads for my wig

i just spent 40 bucks on a relatively good base wig i cant rind dreads anywhere

ao im suck with a blank wig while i gather up the dingly-dangles to tie into it
and im letting my new bandana sit out in the sun to fade

i should probably start undressing Jacks old wig and get him ready to sell

i kind of dont want to though, i have had him for so long

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

Look for Afro Kinky synthetic hair at your local SD Sally's or other hair places. The pack of hair runs about $4.99 and yields anywhere from 4-8 dreads. The dreads on OST wig are very thin and long so you can get at least 8-10 good dreads from these packs.

Make sure you get dark brown (#2) , light brown (#4), and auburn but not too red. I also have a link to blond and blond/brown blends here: hair & wig, lace front wig, full wig, half wig, braid, weaving, hair

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

oh sweet
so it is like how i did the last ones. only more, and longer, and blond

the link didnt work
it just took me to the home page

and what should i use to bond them togther
last time i used black bees wax, is there anything better i could use

Re: Capn_Jack_Savvy's POTC - On Stranger Tides Captain Jack Sparrow, savvy?

Look under ponytails. They sell the kanekalon hair in packs $5.99 each albeit they are slow to deliver and have't responded to my emails yet. They are also on FleaBay but will not combine shipping on two or more items.

Kanekalon so all you need is STEAM!
