Millennium Falcon Bunk Bed Build - TFA Details 5/8 Scale

This is incredible! and I have to say seeing this really made me feel good (better than I have in some time)
and reminded me of the happiness of Star Wars can bring when done right:)

That's Stinkin' Thinkin'. Positive thoughts! :)

That nose is looking amazing! Are you going to add greeblies to the canopy beams and interior side of the window?

Thanks SK! I'm worried because of the relief cuts I put on the trailing edges of the struts. The panel will go on, but it'll have about a half inch gap at least! That's too much to ask of wood filler lol. I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it.

I am definitely going to add greeblies and tubing to the interior. It's becoming pretty cramped in there but I actually like it better... seems more realistic. I look forward to those finishing touches! Maybe I'll use the hoses to hide the gaps :D

Much appreciated, Yoda! I am happy to build (when I can) but the real joy is seeing the reaction of my kids and knowing that others are enjoying it as well.

Just jumping into this thread now and I have to say, you're doing an amazing job. The look on your kids faces in one of the pictures really shows how excited they are. Well done!

As promised, I got the pictures uploaded last night and have some exciting progress to share. I cut the largest piece last week (before the snowfall!) but it’s the result of months of planning. When I picked up 3 sheets of ¼” panel board at ReStore, I immediately set one aside in my garage. I curved it, set some weight on it, and let it collect dust for months (the last one is my specialty).

Finally, the day came to cut it out! I set the craft paper template on the sheet and was immediately disappointed. It’s not big enough! These are 4 x 8 foot sheets if that gives you a better idea of scale.

I wanted the bottom to be one piece for strength and safety reasons so I went with it. After cutting and fitting, I was left with a small triangular gap on both sides. I’ll be able to patch it easily but it means additional seams that I wasn’t anticipating.

20161122_153208_zpszxx2nukc.jpg

It’s secured with a variety of roofing nails (thanks again, ReStore!) which held surprisingly well. I drilled 5/32nd pilot holes for fear of splitting the wood.

In the last picture, you can almost tell that the front horizontal struts are not level. I’m assuming that the prongs warped slightly. It’s disappointing for sure but can’t be corrected at this point so I went ahead and cut the nose cone panel.

Nothing says “I trust you” like holding a nail for your kid. That's as close as my hand got.

And here it is, how it sits in their room right now. Children for scale.

I have the top arch panel cut out as well but need to paint it before installation since there’s literally ½ inch clearance from the ceiling! I also need to trim down several edges and blend them together… a herculean task. Somehow, I don’t think wood filler will manage. Does anyone know if there’s a tape or something I can use? I’ve hung drywall in the past and I was thinking of something along those lines. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I guess if all else fails, I can use duct tape!
At any rate, I appreciate the support and encouragement of my fellow RPFers. I’ll keep building!

AWESOME!!!! "Nailed" It! That is fantastic! I think for the nose/body skin transition(s) the wood filler should be ok. But I would sand everything smooth, add some primer filler and see if the wood filler is even necessary. The fact that a seem line is showing would, in my opinion, give the impression that the cockpit is made up of several pieces that all bolt together. :)

One thing to consider is using screws to keep the exterior skin in place. If you counter sink them you can simply cover with filler. Just a thought. Are you going to paint and weather the exterior?

I think the interior nose "Panels" need a few greeblies! ;)

Thanks SK! I'm definitely going to sand things smooth because it is primarily a head-bonking structure for the children. I agree with you on the seams but I'm more worried about gaps. I considered countersinking screws into the exterior but the board is only 1/8" thick... I realize now that I look back at my previous post that I said it was 1/4". My mistake. The roofing nails are not terribly noticeably and I'll throw some filler around them and make them disappear.

Am I going to paint/weather the exterior? Is a wookiee's butt fur crusty? :lol I'm really looking forward to that part!

This is amazing!!! One of the best builds I've seen on this site in a long time. :thumbsup
So jealous that you have the space/time/materials to build this.

I'll be looking forward to seeing this build completed; SUBSCRIBED for sure!! :popcorn

Thank you, Doctor! I'm glad you're enjoying it :D

I've found that time is the biggest constraint (it is wibbly wobbly, right? ;)). But even if I can sneak in an hour of work, I'm that much closer to being done. There have been many setbacks but determination is essential (and help/encouragement from fellow RPFers). You might be interested in our bedroom door. It's just wood, paint, paper, and TIME... but you add all those together and you get some amazing results!

Keep building!

Love the TARDIS door, HW!!

Budget builds are my favourite, especially when they look as fantastic as this (I thought you'd used real vinyl stickers on those doors until you told me they were paper! ;))

But I agree, time seems to be the main constraint for all my builds right now.

Keep up the good work!

Kind regards, The14thDr

The time has come for BUTTONS! Not real buttons, of course. Real buttons cost money… imagination is free! I have a steady supply of small plastic containers that I have been saving for months. The plastic is robust, square, and half an inch, just the right size! It’s like I planned the whole thing ;)
I used a box cutter to cut off around 3/16” of the end of the containers. Cotton was used to diffuse the light.

I started with E6000 but that was an absolute mess. I switched to hot glue and made short work of it. It’s not as strong though and my (almost) 2 year old daughter already broke one off. I ran out of “buttons” so that means another month or two of collecting.

20161218_133559_zpspmw55byg.jpg

NOW it’s starting to look more Star Warsy! I’m still looking for some decent round “buttons” for the indicator lights at the top. They’re one inch and I’ve experimented with water bottle caps but am open to suggestion.

I also needed to address the exterior. Plans to planes, planes to paper, paper to panels… a lot can go wrong. There were many gaps and overlapping parts. The nose cone panel seemed to grow about two inches on the right as I installed it.

20161219_144952_zpskxhlirxk.jpg

And of course… large gaps appear.

20161219_161246_zpsyzjvwaqn.jpg

I ran around the outside with my sawzall and was pleasantly surprised on how it turned out. I was less enthused about the amount of panel board saw dust distributed throughout my house (and lungs). But it’s fun to look at and gives a glimpse into the future weathered look.

I’m back to 12 hour days at work but I try to make time at least once a week to get something (even something small) accomplished. Merry Christmas (and Happy Life Day to all you wookiees). I’ll keep building!

My boys’ room is currently a post-Christmas disaster area. The floor is covered in Hotwheels, Pokemon cards, and most dangerous of all, LEGO (Star Wars of course). That being said, I did manage to put a couple layers of filler on the gaps. I haven’t smoothed anything out… in fact, I’m still trying to close some of those gaping wounds!!! But here she is as of now.

SofaKing01, who is currently building a LIFE SIZED Millennium Falcon, has graciously offered to scale some greeblies down to 5:8 for my humble build. I can’t tell you how much it means to us (my family included) to experience the kindness and generosity of a fellow RPFer. This is truly a wonderful and supportive community and I appreciate being a part of it. I’ll keep building!

Fantastic! Check out all that filler! Glad I'm not the only one suffering through the dust and buying new vacuum filters. ;)

Screws should help seal up those pesky gaps. My fear is that nails will begin to slowly creep there way out when the bunk bed is moved around. Just a thought?

Looking awesome, my friend! I'm sure the kids love it!

Thats just mega awesome, I really love your skills in getting great looking parts that are gathered like the "buttons" awesome work.

Not much to report... just fill, sand, repeat. There is a little procrastination in there too. :behave I'll try to get going this weekend.

Thank you, Canister! It's been a fun challenge to keep cost down and stay true to the design. I like to imagine that's what it was like when they made the original set.

Very cool! I'm working overtime (at my job... not on the Falcon :unsure) but hopefully, I'll get it finished soon! Thank you, Carshowtv!

I build my kids a castle bunk bed many years ago. They still talk about it. Great project and lucky kids.

I’m a patient man but I couldn’t stand one more round of filler and sanding. Despite her (many) imperfections, I decided to paint the exterior. It was so encouraging that I continued to the interior and hit the Volvo panels. I also glued a couple more “buttons” into place. The bottom half of the interior will be flat black. I’m working toward the fun part… weathering!!!
