Lightyear

I enjoyed it for what it was -- did the imax enhanced 4k ver and it looked great
it was a lil hard at first without tim voice - and the cat made the movie for me

I decided to wait till it hit Disney+ before I watched it. Which was fine because it was less than two months from the time it hit the theater that it made it to the platform. I wasn’t impressed. I didn’t see anything heroic in Buzz spending literally 100 years trying to get his friends off the planet, failing to do so, and deciding to just suck it up and start a brand new star command.

That really was not the adventure I expected we would have seen by the buildup of the Toy story movies. Not to mention, there is absolutely no way that movie, would have been shown in theaters in 1995.

It was fine, not as memorable as a Toy Story movie but it was ok. In Toy Story, we see Buzz as a selfish robot who cares about his mission (before his character development turning into a normal acting toy) so I kept seeing it as such. The toy in Toy Story acts exactly like his character, this is why Buzz acts so odd in the movie, its always who he was before interacting with the other toys.

If you go in expecting the character from the previous movies, you havent paid attention to what's going on with this movie. Andy is a child, this movie had space rangers, monsters and evil droids, so of course he'd only pay attention to those aspects of such a movie. But the whole Zurg being Buzz was weird to me.

Overall it was an alright adventure movie, maybe if they continue, it could follow the old animated Star Command storyline

I watched it.

The cat was my favorite character. I really liked the cat. The first time Buzz went to steal his ship it started to get really exciting, but then the story didn't go very far after that.

There was a lot more potential in a story about Buzz than was realized in this picture.

The first trailer with Bowie sountrack promised all the best things about space opera - grand alien landscapes, exploration, mystery, adventure, action ... and now I feel cheated. There was nothing in that trailer, spiritually, that made it into this movie.

It took me a while to figure out why I wasn't getting any of the euphoria I get from watching a good sci-fi movie. Here's what I figured out:

- there was no real world-building outside of the story setup. The best sci-fi films give you some sense of exploration where new settings continue to be introduced throughout the plot. IMO no film did it better than Star Wars. At first it was about a kid on a farm. Then it was about their journey to Mos Eisley. Then its about their journey with smugglers. Then the Death Star ... even up to the end we never saw anything like x-wings vs TIE fighters in space before ... you get the picture. On the other hand Lightyear was all about escaping from just one world and most of the time going against characters we already knew.
- Chris Evans did a straight vanilla reading of the part. He didn't introduce any nuance or character into the role. He didn't need to be over the top, like Tim Allen, but I wish he gave us something - anything. Buzz Lightyear was the most boring character in the movie that bears his name.
- Toy Story alluded Zurg being a nemesis through multiple adventures. They didn't need to introduce him and "off" him in one film. And what a tired revelation. It would have been so much better if Zurg was just an alien. At least that would give a sense of a greater universe. Instead we get a shrunken universe in a story that, literally, went nowhere in every sense.
- Having the story take place in a geographically limited setting with a handful of characters doesn't make it a bad film, but it does rob the film of any feeling of grandeur
- this was a sci-fi film devoid of any sense of mystery or discovery
- There was something off-putting about the reckless way Buzz kept time dilating repeatedly without anticipating for one second the ramifications on his relationships.
- after decades of loss and regret, Buzz's character arc is all about ... being more supportive to beginners? Seriously?
- the film was such a wasted opportunity. If they even just delivered a basic Space Ranger popcorn adventure movie (i.e. a prequel to this film) which introduced us to the universe, they could have even built a spinoff franchise from that. It's like they were eager to do Spectre or No Time To Die when they should have been making Dr. No instead.

It feels like if there was a sequel, it would be more of that space opera youre wanting. Space Rangers in space doing spacey stuff.

I really hope so.... with the first trailer i have to agree with the above statement ... it gave me the feels and i was expecting a different type of movie
and it would have been great to have zurg chest open and have 2 or 3 LGM running him on the inside :)

just my 2 cents ---------- happy friday :)

These are the ships from the Lightyear Hyperspeed line I got so far, very nice, they fit well with the old Action Fleet ships (I have the XL-14 fighter on its way to me as we speak):

I'm a part of a 1/18th scale diorama group on Facebook, as well as Starship Modeler. I've seen a few users buying the large scale action figure vehicles to customize for 1/18th scale figures. One person has modified one to be a BSG style Colonial vehicle.

IMO, if this movie did a good job with world-building then people would still be talking about it and pondering the possible scenarios for sequels.

Sadly there is only silence.

In the Toy Story movies, we never seen a sequel besides the cartoon spinoff that Andy's toy was based off of. I doubt Lightyear will get any sort of spinoff or sequel, sadly not alot of people wanted this movie and even less people were satisfied by it.

I think it could have been good if it was just a straight up space opera that wasn't obliged to be profound.

The first trailer gave us a taste of what could have been. It showed us a preview for a movie we didn't get.
