Lightyear

I really hope they do not tie this in with Andy's imagination as a kid (or as an adult, for that matter). It would be such a sucker punch if they pulled a Wizard of Oz (or a Princess Bride) on us. I want this to be a stand-alone mythos - a corner of the multiverse were Buzz is real. That is not too much to ask, no?
To be fair, if you prefer a different head-canon, just make that up for yourself. I always like the idea that Jyn, Cassian and K2 got away at the end of Rogue One(Via K2 downloading himself into the Droid he hacked earlier). I don't mind the movie ending, but i like to imagine them on the beach waiting for the blast, and K2 rocks up in a stolen ship and they get away.
So it's all about coming up with a storyline in your head that you prefer, if the movie ending tunrs out not being to your liking.

All I can say is I really want to see this, but if this movie doesn't end with Lightyear holding a toy Buzz, him hitting the button and us hearing Tim Allen say "To Infinity and Beyond", and Lightyear (Evans) looking at the toy and saying, "That doesn't even sound like me"...........I'll be real disappointed.

The movie is meant to be the movie Andy saw as a kid that made him want the Buzz figure. So in-canon, Buzz isn't a real guy. Chris Evans is playing a CG character in a movie released in 2022, that another CG character in a movie in the 1990's saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear action figure, lol.

I really enjoyed this, lots of fun throwbacks, it felt like a movie from 1995 somehow. And overall just a good scifi movie.

I enjoyed the movie very much but it was a bit longer than it needed to be. I didn’t care much for a couple of the secondary characters. All the characteristics of the Buzz Lightyear Action Figure were represented in the Lightyear movie Buzz. Seeing the evolution of the suit was cool and the final ship really looked like the Buzz action figure box. There’s only one major departure from Toy Story movie canon that I noticed. I’ll save that for a later post when more people have seen it. As for the controversy… if you blink you’ll miss it.

There are 3 extra scenes throughout and after the credits. You have to wait a LONG time to see them. The last one (after the Pixar lamp trademark animation) is the only one worth the wait.

Ps.
If your bringing little kids, the movie can be a bit confusing. Time travel and people around Buzz aging and dying and all of that. We heard lots of kids asking their parents what’s happening.

OK, I'm guessing I am one of the few who didn't really like this movie. Visually speaking, GORGEOUS! The level of detail and thought that was put into everything was Pixar's best yet! However, the story to me was weak at best. TONS of potential never realized... a weak story, flat uninteresting characters and in my opinion the "cool villain potential" that Zurg COULD HAVE BEEN was totally wasted! Pixar has set the bar so high so many times and told so many GREAT stories, I expected more.

On the plus side, I thought Chris Evans did a great job voicing Buzz! ;)

The lesbians, then, seem anachronistic.

No, just lesbians in a children's film.
It might have been a parental guidance movie that Andy’s mother judged was okay for him to see.
I’ve not seen it yet, but I assume it’s just two female characters in a relationship? It’s not explicit or anything, is it?

Of course its not explicit, its a PG movie. You'll see more 'explicit' imagery on broadcast television. You literally see one characters life in quick snippets, one she is with her girlfriend, one they kiss quick. Blink and you'll miss it. This also takes place in the far future.

Saw it yesterday. Overall, it’s a fun summer blockbuster, especially compared to the overhyped/over-marketed stuff it’s competing with (Jurassic World/Top Gun). I don’t buy the “this is the movie that Andy saw in 1995” thing because there is no way this is a movie from 1995. Take that out of the beginning and I don’t have a problem. But, as has been mentioned, there are plenty of anachronistic film elements, Marvel-esque “humor” where every possible moment is undercut with a non sequitur trying to pass as a joke, etc.

The film doesn’t fall completely flat due to these things, but they certainly stop it from feeling like a movie from 1995. Visually it’s stunning, one of Pixar’s best, which isn’t surprising, as technology ever marches forward. It was a fun genre film, which felt refreshing as most other Pixar films (barring Incredibles) fit into the unique category of “Pixar movie”. There were definitely moments in the film where I had a big dopey grin on my face. The secondary characters were mostly meh for me, with the exception being the robot cat Socks, who stole the show. Chris Evans does a good job. I felt that there could have been/should have been a Tim Allen cameo, but it’s no surprise to me that he would not have been invited back right now. In fact, this entire film may be partially an effort to distance a profitable character from an actor with extreme views.

Part of me wishes they’d used or made reference to either some of the Randy Newman score from the Toy Story movies or the theme song to the Buzz Lightyear TV show, which is very catchy. But that’s about the only reference to the TV show I would have wanted.

Also worth noting the Giacchino score is amazing, lots of great repeating themes, something you dont get in movies much anymore.

Some thoughts right after leaving the theater:

This is an oddly paced story. The first act and inciting incident feel like a recap of the end of some other movie. There's some odd decisions about where to put the narrative emphasis here.

The conceit that this is a movie from 1995 hinders the experience, imo. It doesn't look, feel, or sound like it's from that era, and the constant need to undercut the seriousness of your main character is a very post -MCU kind of thing.

The "infamous" lesbian kiss was part of a montage that was the best part of the movie.

Buzz and other characters sure do exclaim "what!?" a lot. You could make a drinking game out of it.

75% of the tension in the story is generated either by characters not knowing things they arguably should know (e.g. time dilation being a thing), or them ******* up when things are otherwise going fine. It reminded me of the old writing adage that if you don't know what else to do in a story, have a man burst in with a gun. Pixar must have run out of ideas pretty frequently while making this.

The big twist makes zero sense. It does generate some actual dramatic tension, but it's nonsense even by the story's own logic.

Finally, it was not a good idea to focus this story on deconstructing Buzz Lightyear's status as a classic hero because he's never been presented in a classically heroic light. The entire purpose of Buzz Lightyear the toy was as a delusional foil to Woody, and later as part of an ensemble. It's like the filmmakers were reacting to a public perception of Buzz that doesn't exist.

At the very least, there needed to be a 10 or so minute prolog, Indiana Jones style, following Buzz on a mission, to make being a Space Ranger look fun and cool, so we can see why Buzz is so attached to his job.

I think the idea, from watching interviews with the director, was to show how Buzz became the hero that made Andy want the toy. He starts out as a hard headed soldier who doesn’t want anyones help and realizes he needs others help to get the mission done. It wasn’t deconstructing it, it was building it up from something else.
