Julien’s Upcoming Hero Phaser & Communicator Auction

OOOOps! Look at the top of the P1 side rail just under the thumb wheel. There's an imperfection in the shell right at the rail that looks rather cleanly reproduced in this new one. Also the 'forehead' looked to be a few hairs thicker than it should be. I think I'm leaning towards stellar reproduction rather than real prop....

I've spotted a few things that if you look closely at your Finey build should stand out clear as day to you....

FWIW, the phaser looks good to me, but I'm no expert.

Feek61 is and as such I'm cautiously optimistic.
A lot of time has passed, and the props may not always have been loved or cared for as they should have, much could have happened over the years. The story/history of the items are important and need to be reasonable/logical.

I have see similar things over in the collector car world. Where big money is involved, much diligence is required. Fakes are sometimes successful. It's inevitable.
In the end it's always buyer beware.

I tried very hard to make a Cloud Minders (formerly Finney) phaser, so I'm well aware of the inconsistencies and imperfections that I did not include simply because I did not want to make myself crazy. But I can see where if someone was going to pay me even 10K for it, I would have.

Here is the Finney P2 closeup from "Court-Martial":

Three observations:
1. The TMOST P1 (in the sceen used prop listing photo) is right up against the rear deck of the P2. In the Finney P2 screen grab closeup there is a large gap.
2. The leading edge of the rear fin clips are too close to the leading edge of the rear fin cut in the P2 body.
3. The Finney P2 screen grab closeup does not appear to have a P1 release pin with a concave depression in the end. Where as the listing photo does...

Also they forgot the Hero metal base plate! - - which is obvious in the other Finney P2 closeup photos. You can see it clearly in Captain D's closeup photo of the Lenore.

I don't think either of those can be said conclusively without photos from exactly the same angle

that just looks like brass patina to me, it wouldn't have any when new.

It’s possible that the lighting angle and the touch-up paint could distort the perceived length of the fins. Lighting can create shadows and highlights that might make the fins appear longer or shorter than they actually are. Also if the fins have been pushed back too far into the recess this could also affect their apparent length and position.

Back and forth! I forgot this thread had been started so I’ll repost the comment as to why the fins might appear different if indeed this is the same phaser:

I would love for this to be authentic, but with the high level of reproduction (deception and subterfuge) that is now commonplace, we may never know!

I don't know how many people were around when the Alpha comm was discovered but it was so ridiculed that both John Long and Greg Jein dropped out of the discussions; never to contribute again.

I will reach out to see if I can post some photos so that we can have a discussion based on more than one photo but keep an open mind! :)

I feel like it's possible that it's real. Just some little things don't seem right. But this could be camera angles, lighting or so on. We need some more (and higher definition) pictures of both.

We need more photos, which will surely pop up once the items are listed on the auction site.

Okay, one more thing- the handle appears to be too far forward by more than a little. Could this just be 'play' with the twist lock (I never made one with the twist lock)? If not, that's the worst offending thing I just noticed....

Yeah, but I also remember when the Nichelle Nichols midgrade's were first introduced... Everyone was jumping my case and told me to shut up after I pointed out things that were wrong.

It wasn't until I posted pics doing in depth comparison between them and the builds JPL was selling on eBay.. Once everyone realized I was right they jumped on the expert bandwagon.....
