What does this have to do with pushing the P2 emitter out? I don't understand how that back P1 release can make the emitter retract with the P1 in place. Please explain.KUROK - I was thinking the same thing after I saw the photos this morning provided by Dhan on his blog (THANKS DHAN! BTW) - it explains why (IMO) there is no gap between the back of the P1 and P2 rear deck now. And to be clear the P1 release mechanism locking bar ( the stud on the flapper that holds the P1 in place see drawing below) is missing now. You can see the stud in the Court photo below.

I found this hero near the end of "Dagger Of The MindTo my recollection, this phaser is only seen it "Conscience of the King" and "The Galileo Seven." Could be that phasers that followed were more refined and were used more, none more BTW than TMOST which seemingly was the star of the four phasers since it had more screen time and was also featured in the TMOST book. It stands to reason that they would pick the best one to photograph. Interesting that the Conscience / Lenore / Ripley was seen early on in the episodes (after the conversion) and in the early promo shots; probably because it was the first completed and delivered to the studio making it the only one available at the time. The invoice for the conversion is dated 8/22/66 which coincides with the first day of filming of "Miri" followed directly by "Conscience of the King" and then "Galileo Seven." The invoice was not actually paid until a month later on 9/22/66 so was it standard for payment to take a month or was the order not delivered in full until sometime in between. Unfortunately, we will probably never know the answer. I will have to go back and look but I believe there is a hero in "Dagger of the Mind" which was filmed on 8/9/66 which would mean they were delivered much earlier than the invoice. We do know that the Conscience / Lenore / Riley was never featured again, in either promos or in the episodes which does imply it was the worst of the 4 hero phasers.
You can see the longer emitter was one of Matt's design features in his P2 working drawing. In fact the first "highly detailed dummy phasers we see in "Devil in the Dark" reflect this emitter length.I think the production may have liked the longer emitters because the later midgrades were all longer than the heros.
Just my personal opinion: The short emitter may just be the spring-loaded catch is not installed yet or is damaged.
The P1 latch bar spring (under the 10 turn box) pulls back on the flapper bar that the P1 lock bar is attached to.What does this have to do with pushing the P2 emitter out? I don't understand how that back P1 release can make the emitter retract with the P1 in place. Please explain.
We are overlooking the possibility of it simply being built with a shorter emitter and IF it was built first it would explain why later phasers were built with longer emitters.Yes, the Conscience / Lenore / Riley is definitely in "Dagger of the Mind" with the short emitter. The scene was filmed on 8/15/66
It makes more sense that it simply had a shorter emitter. It's entirely possible that the brass block on the P2 emitter (which the front of the P1 engages when inserted into the P2) was either missing or was attached to the emitter at a different spot on the Lenore than on the other phasers, thus causing it to not extend as far out.
In my head I have dubbed the Julien's piece the "King Phaser" for obvious reasons. We see it in all three seasons (the only one) and apparently it never got Velcroed. I think they took the prettiest one and assigned it to close-up work, period. When I audited all three seasons for Phaser Hero use I was stunned (yeah, I said it) to find that the heroes virtually disappeared after Season 1 with the exceptions being the few close-ups that we know. And even then, In OG, Tracy's Phaser Close-up is a Mid. Same in Spock's Brain. The fact that they brought back The King for one last use in TCM is astonishing luck for guys like us. From what I've been able to gather TCM is the one and only Hero appearance in Season 3. If anyone has better info, please LMK.Could be that phasers that followed were more refined and were used more, none more BTW than TMOST which seemingly was the star of the four phasers since it had more screen time and was also featured in the TMOST book. It stands to reason that they would pick the best one to photograph.
Are you talking about the "Lenore / Riley" or the "Finney" P2? If you are talking about the "Lenore / Riley" P2 then please disregard my posts. I thought KUROK was talking about the "Finney".t makes more sense that it simply had a shorter emitter.
The "Lenore / Riley" of course... I just figure the simplest solution in this case is probably the correct one.Are you talking about the "Lenore / Riley" or the "Finney" P2? I agree - the "Finney" P2 was filmed more than any other P2 - including IMO in "Shore Leave". Agreed the TMOST never got Velcro on the left side. However contrary to what many believe there was a fourth Hero P1. It is listed in the Desilu Inventory. And there is a shot of both Kirk and Spock with Hero P2s on their gold belts in the "The Man Trap".In my head I have dubbed the Julien's piece the "King Phaser".
Roger that. The "Lenore / Riley" of course... I just figure the simplest solution in this case is probably the correct one.
I think this highly likely. The notion that one tip was shorter and no one grabbed another is possible but I think less likely to the idea that something with the P1 "cradle" went wrong but they could get it to extend a bit and labeled it "good enough". We'll never know for sure so its anyone's guess.I can imagine that the emitter extender assembly broke, and no one had time to sit down with it for three hours to fix or replace it. A "We'll get to it..." that never ended up getting got to.
I agree - I think the "Lenore / Riley" was built with a shorter emitter. You can see different emitter lengths on the B&W Hero P2s in episodes: 5, 6 and 7.We are overlooking the possibility of it simply being built with a shorter emitter
He's still around as far as I knowAlso - someone posted a photo of Robn1s scratch build P2 in this thread - and I did not realize they were talking about him in the past tense until the next day? Has Robn1 passed?
