JFcustom's FOAM files

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

Hi JF, really loving your work!
I'm having trouble finding suitable foam for my 1st project
My local craft shop has lots of coloured foam, but its only 2mm thick and A4 szied.
I have found online suppliers of larger sheets, but it seems to only come as black or grey and i'm not sure if its the correct foam, which is EVA i beleave?
Is depron foam suitable?
Or how about this?
FULL SIZE SHEET ( 94" x 80" ) IN VARIOUS THICKNESS'S | Ace Foam
I'm based in the UK so really need a UK supplier
Many Thanks
Rockhopper

You can buy these Venture Products, LLC. Which are the same as the one that STEALTH use for his Iron Man suits. You can also find this ones in Sears & Pep Boys.

Rockhopper;
this is the stuff I'll be using, Plastazote, (LD45) will be getting the red and yellow sheets, 6mm mostly with some 3mm for detail work
Thames Valley Supplies - Plastazote LD45 Cut To Size (these guys also do pipes and hose btw)

To coat it, I believe James at Xrobots uses Smooth-On's Smooth cast 65D, available in the UK from Bentley advanced materials, page 12-13 of their catalogue shows a choice, I was thinking maybe 45D for coating the outside

hope that's helpful

Hey guys been a while been bust with work!

Here is where im at with the Iron patriot costume using Jf's files :D

I only have the boots to build and the hands the rest is all finished and ready for paint :D just a few more coats of pva and then the painting begins :D I wasn't happy with some of my lines they were messy and had gaps in i managed to pick up some unibond flexible decorating filler and its brilliant no need to sand just run the filler down the lines and smooth off with a wet finger no need for sanding and its made a huge difference it is also flexible so wont crack :D

The paint I've gone for is a uk version of plastidip I ordered from two different companies here in the uk the first one was car dip uk.They were really slow to deliver and charged me double for postage (not impressed) Then i found another company called liquid car wraps who were great they delivered quickly and even sent me a free can of silver paint for me to try (very impressed) I've not tried it out yet but i will let you know what its like :D

To answer everyone at once, here is the difference between the two versions of Iron Man Extremis that you can find on this topic :

IM Extremis v1 http://www.wintershade.com/therpf/IMextremisv1.jpghttp://www.wintershade.com/therpf/IMextremisv2.jpg IM Extremis v2

Here, v1 and v2 doesn't mean one is the improvement of the other. They both come from two different Marvel videogames.

I could just kiss you right now! I've been looking for a more interesting thigh, and a better cover bicep. low and behold you have two right there that are damn near perfect!!! =D

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

Asda sells this camping mat which according to the description is made out of EVA foam and is 6mm I believe. I bought it last weekend but have not yet used it. I was awaiting the rest of my supplies to start my first project. I should be able try tonight.

Thanks AvengerDr, popped to Asda to and picked one up, will give it a try.

A Question of Scale

Hi guys i'm hoping to start building an iron man helmet soon.
I have a question of scale
I only have Pepakura viewer, so will JF's unfolds fit me as they are, or do they need scaling?
I ask as Sharkhead7854 and Labsic's helmets have very different sizes;
Sharkhead7854 235,297,382 - this seems like a realistic size to me
Labsic Mk8 272,186,240 - this seems small, would it actually fit me, or doesit need scaling
Thanks

I have a question of scale
I only have Pepakura viewer...

... now you also have Pepakura Designer ^^

NEVER attempt to build a helmet without scaling it properly before.

Well, no, it's false. You can attempt of course.
But it will be too large of too narrow 9 times out of 10.

Mind that for Sharkhead7854's helmet, the dimensions are for the exploded view... when gathered it's smaller that what is displayed.

Thanks JF, i have found the scale function, so i now know how to change the size.
I noticed that just changing one dimension alters the other 2, so my next question is which dimension is the best to use H/W or D?
What i'm trying to say is which dimension of my head will give a wearable helmet?
Also is it possible to put Sharkheads helmet into a non exploded view in order to scale correctly?
Thanks

How's the liquid wrap stuff going? I found their website and FB page no problems

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

Hey Mick I tried it out this afternoon and its ok here's the results

Now as an experiment I squirted the paint into the lid and brushed it on (I was to lazy to tape everything off) and it went on very well the only down side as it dries you can see the brush marks but I might give it a final blast over to finish it off nicely. Dries quite quickly so no waiting around for ages for it to set. I went for Traffic blue its not quite right but as near as I could get it and also their metallic alu spray which could do with being a bit lighter. It's good stuff though and flexes well the Original Iron man helmet in the photo was painted with plastikote last year and cracked nearly right away :( The liquid car wraps is the cheapest I can find in the uk about £10 a tin with 3,99 postage also offer a discount for multiple cans

Web site here Home - Liquid Car Wraps

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

Looking at the colour chart on their web site I would be tempted to try the purple however would be a bit of a risk just in case it out more purple than blue. I've ordered the cherry red metallic also hopefully it will be here by next week Make sure you get a respirator if you buy some as its as toxic as plastidip

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

What kind of respirator filter should be used when carving detail into EVA foam with a dremel? The one against organic vapour or particulate?

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

I would say particulate as its more of a dust than a vapour from the foam

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

looks pretty good billymaya, as I've got a HVLP spray gun was gonna get their tins

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

yeah might be a cheaper alternative rather than the cans and thanks :D

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

just waiting on a reply on their FB page regarding clean up, shouldn't think water would do the job

Re: FOAM speed building files'n'tricks ►IM Extemis v2◄ added

Have you got a link to their facebook page please mick I couldn't find it. Not sure about inside a spayer but the good thing about it using a brush because its plastic stuff its just pulls off the brush once dry
