Iron Man Helmet - **FINISHED** 25-07-10 **

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP + a few questions...

Really? The Mark III is a darker color than the MkIV/VI... how deep/dark is the pepper red? :)

the Mark III is a darker red. You're right. They're not all the same Shade of Red.

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP *updated 13/07/10*

Finished off sanding the filler primer tonight with wet and dry. It's nice and smooth all over now.

Next job is to fill the small pits and imperfections - there are probably 8 or 9 nothing major. Once they're all sanded flat it should be ready for a final couple of coats of regular primer. Then painting!

Quick photo of tonight's work not much different to last night:

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP + a few questions...

What putty do you suggest Gemini? Does it cure rock hard? I am going to fill in the cheeks of my Iron Man helm.. and dremel the details... But I don't want to use Bondo.. You can see my build in the thread here on the RPF.

Nope.
Sand the entire thing first with a 320/600 gr paper.
Then use putty to fill the holes. At first the holes won't get totally covered since the air that gets trapped between the putty and the bottom of the hole just won't make it work. So, give it a first try. Sand it again and the putty again. Or you can use some bondo, but since bondo usually gives you little holes anyways, I'd say go with two runs of putty. After you've covered the holes, sand the entire tihng again, with 600 gr paper and under the water in order to make it as smooth as possible.

After that apply the first coat of SPRAY FILLER. Let it dry for at least 15 minutes. Sand it again with 600 gr and water. If the result is good to you, no holes or scratching on site, you can then apply the first coats of paint or you can go with the primer if it's only a primer and not a primer-filler.

That would be it.
I'm sure other guys here have bigger experteese, but this method usually cuts it for me ;)

Filled in the pits and marks tonight with Isopon .38 (the UK equivalent to Bondo). Will sand these all smooth on Saturday.

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP *updated 13/07/10*

Did some work on the helmet today. Sanded the filler I put on the other day to fill the main pits then sprayed a coat of grey filler.

I noticed once the grey filler had dried it showed up a number of further minor marks/pits. Thought I'd break out the filler and get them sorted. I'll need to sand those down tomorrow.

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP *updated 17/07/10*

Did some work on the helmet earlier. Sanded the filler spots I put on yesterday and did 2 coats of red primer.

I'm going to leave it to dry now for 24hrs and then have a good look over it and sand down any remaining bits.

Then I'll use up the can of red primer with a few final coats and then the helmet will be ready for it's final sanding with wet and dry. Then on to painting the real colours!

Looking phenominal! Can't wait to see it all painted up

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP UPDATED - 18-07-10

Cheers Bimmer.

Did 3 coats of red primer tonight to use up the can. Just a final sand down with wet and dry over the next few nights and then I'll pick up the red and gold spray paints later on this week.

Not sure how many cans of the red and gold spray paints i'll need - any suggestions??

Watching this with interest as that looks exactly like the helmet I've just picked up on eBay. And as I'm in the UK as well seeing how your paints turn out will come in pretty handy. ;) You've done a great job so far!

Cheers TMP. It's certainly turned out better so far than I expected.

Mole - I'll keep an eye out on the forum for info on your progress.

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP UPDATED - 20-07-10

Sanded the final coats of red primer tonight. That's it now - I'm going to pick up the red and gold spray paints tomorrow along with a can of lacquer. Then probably towards the end of the week/weekend I'll finish this beast.

I'm so glad I sorted out the pits and minor indents with filler. They're now completely flat as if they were never there.

Final couple of shots - the last ones before the finished product:

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP UPDATED - 20-07-10

looking fantastic, great job. i hope i can get mine as smooth looking as that. how many coats of filler primer did you end up putting on?

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP UPDATED - 20-07-10

Probably far more coats than I really needed. I worked out it was 4 coats of plastic bumper primer, 4 coats of plastic filler primer, the I filled the pits and marks with filler, then after sanding did 4 more coats of red plastic primer.

With all the priming and filling though it deffinitely got a nice primed finish.

Can't wait to spray the final colours on it now!

awwwwesome! Anxiously awaiting the coming pictures now :)

Re: Iron Man Helmet - painting WIP UPDATED - 21-07-10

It's done!

I did the red first - 5 coats in all with a 15 minute wait between each coat. Then did the same for the gold. I finished that yesterday and did 2 coats of lacquer this morning.

Seeing as I'd never touched a can of spray paint or primer in my life, the finish I got is amazing and I couldn't be happier with the colour.

For those interested I used Pepper Red and Nissan Gold. Both purchased from Halfords in the UK. The lacquer was regular Halfords clear lacquer.

Ok..here come the photos:

I'd just like to say thanks to all the members that gave me advice on this - priming, painting etc. You know who you are. Cheers!

Looks amazing, one question though, is there red underneath the gold on the faceplate? It seems to be and it's detracting from the color. I would've done a solid gold coat on the whole thing, then sprayed red where it's supposed to be. Just sayin cuz that gold looks like it's tinged red. You might want to give it a second coat to make it look better.
