I'm gonna need a bigger boat,ORCA

I'm not interested in arguing. So I'm just going to put this out there for you to ponder.
In the film industry we rely on the Audience not thinking like us, When I watch a film I can't help but think "where's the crew?"because my job is hiding them, I'm sure you've all watched show's like storage wars. Did you ever wonder how they get the shot of the door opening form the inside for the reveal, no there wasn't a camera, and sound man in there for years, its fake.

The Novi is an incredible design, its incredibly stable with a flat rear and deep keel, yet with a high water line, The mast didn't make the boat unstable its ridicules to think that tiny bit of wood would effect the boat that much and stay part of the design. the reason for the mast was at the time Gaming boats (which the ORCA was supposed to be) trended to having masts with crows nests. there are half a dozen in the bay next to the ORCA in all the photos from set.

the reason for the added ballast, was the crew and the crew rigs. ORCA had designed in a crew platform running all down her side for shooting and lighting. That's what the bolt pate are for.

The ORCA was covered in crew for most of the shoot ("Save the sound department.")

If the ORCA was so unstable why was it so hard to pull her over.

If you look at her water line its not that much different to the Warlock. There's no ballast in any of my models but I've not got 20 guys and all the gear hanging off the side to worry about.

I do advice you not to start watching movies thinking about where the crew is, it really ruins the experience.

Fantastic pics (y) (y) (y) (y)

Thank you for sharing.

If I was to make a shark movie today, I would make it on the ocean, with a Mechanical Shark. No CGI

Nightmare, sure, but that is what makes it great. Fans would eat it up. Old school, real in shot.

Flimzy? Will you be getting the new expanded copy of MFMV? The release date is late August. I like your red bookmarks. Most of my Jaws reference books have bookmarks or tape arrows pointing to things. This book was just released today. Ian's cousin wrote it.

flimzy Interesting points and reference. For all the time I spent as a boat passenger, I never became well-acquainted with their design physics.

A few of those photos almost seem to mirror the "how many guys you gonna put aboard" scene!

Great stuff. Next logical step for you: recreate the crew platform and make sixth-scale figures of all the crew and equipment.

The crew/equipment idea does make more sense than the mast weight.

They could have used some big (removable) flotation rigs, to mount along the sides of the boat. Quit trying to stabilize the hull with heavy weight at the bottom. Widen the footprint of the hull at the waterline instead.

But that would take some VERY secure mounting. The mounts might have to be disguised into the boat's appearance from day one.

you know that was one of my ideas early on but there are so many guys on the boat to make it would coast more than I've go for this project.
At some point I've got to go back to finishing my house.

I don't know what problem you are trying to fix the OCRA work just fine.

Now instead of paying attention to the plot I'll be wondering if there's a PA hiding behind that road sign or a gaffer hanging upside down from a tree just out of frame.

flimsy,
Thanks for the incredible pictures. All my years as an engineer & offshore fishing a hobby you sure taught me a lot about the physics of ballast. I really liked your well said statement about “not being interested in arguing.” Went back to school as a young adult, so I always tried to listen and thanked the professor.
