I never heard of Obiwan being a clone either. Weird!

As for Uncle Owen, I never heard of him being the brother of Obiwan. He was always the brother of Luke's father.

I still have my CDs (and before that, cassette tapes) of all the SW radio dramas. I used to listen to them on long car drives. I still say they completely screwed the pooch on Han's character. He's not the lovable pirate with a heart of gold in them, he's just a plain ol' douchebag. Not likable at all.
 
Well there was that nice added scene where he tried to talk Leia into convincing Luke into not going on the DS assault. We know now it was a good thing he went but it showed Han cared about Luke throwing away his life.

The Sith were mentioned back then in various articles I remember but only as members of the dark side of the Force.
 
Has anyone read the rough drafts George wrote for Star Wars?
He wrote at least 4, with the last being the shooting script.
I used to have 4 and read through them years ago.
The first 2 were SO very different from the final movie, with most names being all different. The 3rd was pretty close, but still some differences, like Obi-wan and Vader death star fight ended so different. Just from memory, while fighting, Obi-wan backs up and a door slams shut between the two....and that was it. I don't think he died.
Sith was mentioned, but not sure if that was in the first draft or not.
Jedi were called, Jedi Bendu.

I found this off google. Didn't see if if has the full drafts, but looks like it has a good amount of stuff to read on for anyone interested.

 
Owen & Obi-Wan being brothers -

That idea never held any water IMO. Owen didn't seem to want Obi-Wan in his life at all. Luke knew Owen & Beru as his aunt & uncle, Obi-Wan referred to Owen as his uncle, and I never saw any reason to doubt it.


Obi-Wan being a clone -

I've always believed the theory that 'Obi-Wan' was a clone reference at one time or another. Maybe George was picturing Alec Guinness's character as a clone during the production of ANH. Or maybe he was the original (#1) from which other clones were made. Or maybe George had abandoned the clone element by the time cameras were rolling but the name was carried over from an earlier draft. Etc.

One of the first things you find out about Obi-Wan is that he "fought in the clone wars" as a pilot. George was drawing his military inspirations from WW2. At that time pilots were hotshots but they had high attrition rates. Japan & Germany's air power degraded later in the war because they ran out of skilled pilots. It's a logical idea to have a futuristic military using clones for the job.

I remember listening to this back then.. I seem to remember it being broadcast around Christmas maybe..I seem to recall them characterising threepio with Holly and a Santa hat?
I may be dillusional though as I am getting on lol..

I think the misunderstanding at the time was that Ben's formal name was "Obi-One Kenobi" instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

And to hear what Sir Alec himself thought of the whole Star Wars kurfluffle...

The thing I remember was reading an interview with George Lucas after TESB was released, and they asked him point blank about the relationship between Luke and Leia in "Splinter of the Mind's Eye". Lucas said that he didn't trust anyone to keep the secret that Luke and Leia were going to be revealed to be brother and sister, so he never told Foster. He was also forced to admit he hadn't read the novel before it was published, and got caught off-guard by the more "romantic" aspects of Luke's and Leia's relationship, but he added that it taught him the lesson to be far more diligent and guarded about how others treat the characters when they're creating other projects--books, comic books, video games, etc.--just to make sure there would be no other such conflicting stories created.
