Ebay scammer!

I'm all for you undercutting the guy, I noticed that the other day thinking about how I had made one myself (still need to get my 3/8" hole punch...) to sell some REPLICA paperprop for $50 is bad but to ask for nearly $20 for shipping when an envelope and $.36 would do it is outrageous....

and if you're gonna go and make the paper prop thread members only at least hold out another month so I can still add to it LMAO

I am pretty sure the one this guy is selling wasn't scanned from an original. The telltale sign is the placement of the '4 armed star' on the back; it is too low and it is mirrored. But like i said before, his pictures are too unclear to determine without any doubt it is mine. There seem to be other subtle differences but then again, he could have just changed them to be able to say it was his own creation, which ofcoarse it very well could be. My spidey senses tell me it is probably a modified version of mine, but i can't be sure.

Some good points have been made in this thread, like the 'free at cons..sold on ebay stuff' however, i made it very clear when i shared the prop, it was not be sold on ebay. I ofcoarse am fully aware that while most people will honor that request, there are always rotten apples who may be just lurkers who don't care about it.

Thanks to Juno for doing the ebay auction, hope you sell a lot of them so that my work will result in a couple of bucks for a charity, which is enough reward for me with regards to this prop. I made it because i thought it was a cool prop and shared it because i wanted collectors on a low budget to have it and as a 'thank you' to the community from whom i have gotten a lot of free paperprops myself.

I doubt anyone would pay $50 for the paperphone, but if someone did i feel sorry for them....

cheers,

Marc

I for one appreciated your posting it. I have yet to make it though. Do you remember "back in the day" when Sith and you would post EVERY thing you made -- and it was mostly Johnny Mneumonic?

I wasn't making much then, but I sure was reading a lot. Those were the days ;)

Hell yeah. a JM-SIG Reunion thread would be great. Sith can show off his excellent graphics again and you can all bitch to me about still not having the Sogo 7 Datagloves and Thompson Eyephones finished after 5 years :D

Hey, I still have the cigarette pack the doubler came in -- and I've never built the doubler.

I get free things handed to me all the time at comic conventions and see them for sale on ebay, is that any different really? [/b]
The difference here I see is the free handouts and stuff at conventions are generally only handed out at the conventions... If this is a rip off of a free paper prop that is still available online, that would make it a scam. It may not be a direct copy, or related at all to the one posted here... it's the $20 shipping cost that makes it a scam to me. $30 could be considered reasonable if they designed and assembled it themselves... and that's up to debate. The second auction is only for instructions, not the finished product, so it's not direct competition for the original item.

As a new user here, I find it hard to work out how someone really could even put a that big a price tag on something like this particular item, and the postage is a joke, unless it is being delivered by a gold plated carrier pigeon. :) :p

I love the fact that the creative people here willingly share their creations with the rest of us. I would hate to see that come to an end. :thumbsup

I have no real skills when it comes to props at all, and finances are tight, so being able to download paper props, and study them is part of my learning curve. ;)

I liked the idea that Jedirick, is quite good, but as stated could be a pain when there is a large demand for the prop. :rolleyes

At sofageek we have a password protected area for adult type jokes, which is controlled by one admin, members send the admin a pm, and get the password in reply. It works well. :thumbsup

Hey...what do you know. Turns out to be one of of our own....

Maybe he can shed some light on it and post some pics of the circuitry so i can see if any of the intentional 'tells' i hid in there are present.

I couldn't list it with a quanity of 100 without a price of .99 or more. So. . . I decided that all the proceeds would go to an awesome kid's charity.
[/b]
This is funny, i had just tried to purchase one just for the kid's charity and added $1 for shipping (i don't want it shipping though, just giving to charity) but it kept cancelling transaction when i tried to pay via paypal?

Bizarre.

That's my auction. Don't worry -- I won't be just sending them $4. I'm a regular donor.

The numbers 4, 5, 6 looks like the one I've done (look here... http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=ultraviolet )

Looks pretty convincing to me.

I too would like to here what they have to say.

If I could see a hi-res of the last one I can tell you if it is mine or not (I've custom-made the text at the bottom, it's not a standard font...)

I noticed he is still trying to unload them on ebay. I have asked him to sent me some detailed pics of the circuitry for comparison, since i put a couple of tells in there. Wonder if i get a response.

In the meantime, i will re-upload the pics so everybody can download them again for free.

Marc

He replied on my first request to send some detailed pics of the circuitry that he wasn't going to for fear of being copied.

my reply:
Yo dude,

There is no need to copy these since these can be downloaded for FREE on the RPF. I know, because i made it and offered it there. When i posted the pics i told everybody that they were for personal use, not profit. As it looks now and by judging from the pics on your website, i can see the hidden 'tells' i put in there. You seem to have lowered and mirrored the graphic on the back (making it not screenaccurate).

That's why i asked for some detailed pics, to see if you indeed did use my graphics. If you don't want to sent me detailed pics, no biggy, but i will conclude that you indeed used my graphics. If you didn't, i can tell right away, since i put hidden tell in mine.

Marc

his reply back
Um I came out with these within 2 weeks of the movie and they are
made from an original, so don't email me if you think you have
one, there's no point.

I really doubt the 'original' story as the graphic on the back is lower and mirrored on his than the real ones. The pic on his site seems to have some of the tells i put in there, but without better shots i can't be 100% sure

marc

just sent him this:

If yours was copied from an original, why is your backgraphic lower that the originals and mirrored? if this is intentional, you should really alter your description of '100% true to the original"

if your claims are indeed true, you will have no problem proving it on the RPF in the following thread, where suspicions of you using free RPF material (phone and ID cards from Ultraviolet) for profit have been made.

http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=116166

Your fear of being copied is unjust as the ebay auction for the real ones had a very clear hot of the circuitry

Marc

Apparently he didn't get the point of your first e-mail... (Yeah, sure... :angel )
Now we should wait his next answer...

Thanks for the effort Marc ;)
