Doctor Who? 15th Doctor on D+

I've enjoyed Gatwa's performance.
I've liked Belinda fine, more than Ruby, although I didn't have much problem with her, either. I couldn't stand most of Whittaker's companions. Yaz was a great big nothing; her being the greatest person the Doctor has ever known, as she put it, is baffling.

The companion just wanting to go home is not new, a good proportion of them have had that in common.

But for the most part, these two seasons are just "pants", as a Brit might say.
The "mavity" thing is so annoying. Just stop.
The score is on meth. It's the first thing in the episode, nothing dramatic is happening yet and we're just setting Tardis coordinates, so why does the music think this is an Act 3 car chase in a Fast and Furious movie? Calm the hell down.

I could go on.

There's been a lotta speculation that Belinda was a band-aid solution to having to drastically reduce Ruby's role. Tabloid rumours were that the actor that plays her was hard to work with, which I don't believe at all tbh - if she was fired she wouldn't show up in the second series. I bet she just had a bad time filming the first series and asked for a reduced role.

Introducing a new companion probably lead to a lot of structural issues with the series. I could easily see a version of this story where the number of magic babies is reduced to 1, for example. I think it's pretty obvious in retrospect that Ruby's mom wasn't meant to be a regular old person, wearing a Jedi cloak and pointing ominously at a street sign for the benefit of nobody. The Interstellar Song Contest is definitely meant to have Ruby in the companion role too.

And then the final episode, Bel literally gets put into a box where we don't have to think about her for most of the episode. Almost like she's not meant to be in the story lol.

the official instagram account spoiled every episode days after airing, and i hadnt got a chance to even start the season, so why bother now.

They spoiled them same day. Idiot reporters (and i used that term loosely) throw spoilers in their headlines same day.. there is special place below waiting for those people.

That’s the bigger issue in modern media: not prioritizing a story, but instead highlighting their own self interests.
Ag the same time people throw that up at any type of portrayal. Characters cant be gay, or female, or non white without people saying it is pushing an agenda. The doctor was a white guy for 50 years because the show started in the 60s. It was a crime to be gay in the early 60s in england as well i believe. What percent of the population is gay? At 5% 1 of 15 doctors being gay is in line with an average. At 10% it would be below. If nothing else, they have set a clear precent from the outset that each new doctor is a completely different personality.

I mean it is from England. I have seen plenty of english shows who cast colorblind. Black actor playing royalty or other characters in period pieces whi clearly arent black in the show or they couldnt domwhat they do. In those, obviously they cant acknowledge the skin color, but still.

I can only imagine how triggered some people were over jo martin who seems to be a perfect choice.

I thought the second season was a lot stronger than the first season.

The stories kind of reminded me of the Eccleston days.

I think the problem is, is that it was so deliberately changed, that long time fans like myself didn’t recognize it anymore. And it also failed to capture a new audience.

The Rose Tyler thing was a last-minute grab. You can tell, because he did not morph into her like they normally do.

He simply faded out in the regeneration energy, and then her face was literally paste it on top of it afterward.

I don’t believe they had a new doctor in mind, and I don’t think she is the doctor either.

At this point though, I don’t really care either way.

They should either leave the series alone for 5 to 10 years, or recast Paul McGann as the doctor and give him a proper few series.

oh please let it not be the "let's ask for the audience's input" flavor of writing. Let alone the movie "EDtv" was all about how horrible that can be, it is the reason we cringe as a group when someone mentions its use in LOST. I don't need any more shows written from the pocket of someone's social media interactions.

I know your complaint was about spoilers but I have seen that behavior with LOST social media accounts and how they released spoilers just to get reaction click data to very possibly undo the spoiler.

Just no

I still wish Sean Pertwee would do a series as Three, but he has said he doesn't feel worthy. Hogwash!

Except, specifically, the reason they're doing it is because they have an agenda. It's not "here's the best actor/actress we can get for the role", it's "we wanted a fill-in-the-blank because agenda". That's what people complain about. I don't care if there's a female doctor or a black doctor, I care if they're the best damn actor you can get, without pandering to an audience that doesn't actually exist and doesn't watch the show.

That's why every single episode of the latest doctor were among the lowest-rated episodes in the history of the show.

Your opinions are the reason I have a hard time criticizing what I perceive to be a bad couple of series, because everything you wrote makes my skin crawl, bud. Your... "critiques"... make any legitimate discourse about this fandom a god-damned minefield because now I gotta worry about being associated with racists.

The show is bad right now because an out of touch well meaning old white guy is in charge, not because he has the temerity to cast a black man or a woman as the lead role.

If done for the right reasons, sure. Why not?
Right reasons? How about "it's time"?

The unspoken undercurrent of the show seems to be that the Doctor is not just a person, but a chance in the spotlight for each of the surviving souls of Gallifrey, who for whatever reasons could only preserve one of their population. So, they are only capable of taking turns in that one space.

The population then must contain all survivors who did not side with the Master and would then reflect the make-up of that population.

Right enough reason?

They were low rated because they were abysmally written by someone who has zero ideas left so he trades on nostalgia and repetition of past glories. A bit like some RPF posters....

Replica props are all about past glories. Was that meant as some kind of criticism?

As I recall, Tennant came back because they had a gap to fill before gatwa was available. Plus, it was the 60 year anniversary - when they do anniversary it'd always been with past doctors.

The last few years, short of tennant, they've made the doctor too manic IMO. Always going 100mph. I know Tennant popularized it, but he didn't do it the entire episode and his entire rerun, but it worked for him. I don't know if its the show runner or the actors thinking they have to emulate that. They need to be their own characters. Let them be that.

This. In the original series, the Doctor was ALWAYS eccentric (but in different ways), and yet ALWAYS mindful, thoughtful, and intelligent, and even brooding at times. You always knew that you were dealing with a higher intellect. Even when silly on occasion, at least it felt genuine.

The modern incarnation has progressively made the Doctor more frantic, impulsive, manic, and silly for silly's sake. I think it's partially due to the writing. where you gin up an exciting event... by having someone act excited. Like when TV studios have to artificially work-up the live audience with applause/cheering/yelling before the show starts. It comes off as fake and DIS-ingenuous.

Of course, they have also completely re-written the history of "who" and what the Doctor was/is.

Personally, I believe that The Doctor is still in his 11th incarnation stuck in his TARDIS, having a really bad nightmare. He will wake up soon!

Like I was saying about the music.
