Defined Green Lantern Comic Rings

My gut instinct its telling me that 22mm (MAYBE 23mm) is right for the EMERALD DAWN, but that the Gardner/Sinestro ring has to be smaller. 22mm looks good onscreen, but the last test print at that size (long before the current tweaks) just looks too big. The gem is nearly the size of a quarter, which is too honkin’ big.

Here’s the last EMERALD DAWN test print, from many months ago. At 22mm, it looks just about right.

And here’s the Gardner print from that same batch. Same size and shape as the ED, but it somehow looks oversized.

Went in and modified the modern-style V2 variants (classic symbol tri-band, REBIRTH symbol tri-band, and Patrick Gleason REBIRTH symbol) to fit the current V2 style, with the thicker band and thicker symbol. Subtle tweaks, but they actually helped with better defining the tri-band ribs.

Really do need to get some test prints made, soon.

Also, when the main designs are finally locked down, I need to go in and model some of the other variants seen over the years, just to be thorough, and to build a visual guide to the rings.

Now you're talkin' my language! Kyle's ring has always been my favorite. In fact I recently got a rare SIZE 13 DC Direct sterling silver replica so I used that to make tweaks to the 3D model I used to print my personal ring. I'll be printing another eventually... once my cash flow improves TwT

Cool! I’d be eager to get some measurements from that version, if you have a chance. More data is always useful.

Meanwhile, I’ve again tweaked the gem on the Gleason model. As noted, many months ago, the gem with a 90-degree domed arc (a miniaturized version of the V2/V3 gem) very slightly protrudes from the gem socket, which looks weird. It needs to protrude either a lot more or not at all to look correct. After experimenting with a few arcs, 45 degrees seems to be the best for keeping it flush within the socket.

90 degrees on left, 45 on right.

Message sent. Lemme know when you've got some time and I'll provide what I can~

Tinker, tinker.

Holding myself to the guideline of a 5mm height from finger-hole to face, I’ve created these variants. Some have more or less material between the hole and the disc, and some have a thicker or thinner disc. It’s all about finding the right proportions.

Van Sciver tends to draw a thicker disc (but not always), while a real ring-world would probably have a thinner disc.

From left to right: 19mm/2.5mm high disc, 20mm/2.5 high disc, 20mm/2mm high disc, and 20mm/3mm disc.

The second and fourth versions look most “right” to me.

A small experiment:

Since Ethan Van Sciver used the DC Direct Kyle Rayner ring as the model for his version of Kyle’s ring in REBIRTH, I figured I’d whip up some V2 variants in that style, with the raised lip around the edges of the symbol, as well as no gem (left), the flat gem (center), and a domed gem, but recessed into the socket (right).

I'd vote for whichever will make it more comfortable to wear. I'm guessing the slope out as that angles the push to the finger if the ring connects with anything like a chair, or a wall, or Sinestro's jaw...

Yes, the current iteration slopes outward. The BLACKEST NIGHT promo rings also slope out. But I wonder about both the aesthetics and comic accuracy of that.

Back to the 19mm version. It’s remarkable how a small tweak in one direction or another (disc height, disc diameter, amount of material between disc and finger-hole) has such an effect on the look. Too short, too fat, too tall, etc.

This version seems a little better than the 20mm, proportionally. And the slope at the top is a little more subtle.

Of course, it’s always hard to know how these things will actually turn out until I have a test-print in hand. That’s why I spend so much time rethinking and tweaking the models—those prints can get costly, and so I try to get them as right as possible before ordering prints.

While there’s no real reason to do so, I continue to try and keep a stylistic consistency between all the designs. So, all shanks are currently 7mm wide/2.5mm thick, and the distance from finger-hole to face is 5mm.

To that end, I tweaked the EMERALD DAWN and Gardner rings to be a little taller and have that 5mm height. I also enlarged the symbol and symbol socket on the ED, which makes it look more “right”.

I’m also reconsidering the symbol depth. It’s been at 0.50mm for quite some time. Here it is compared with 0.75mm (right). Of course, these rings aren’t actually used AS signet rings, in-universe, and therefore don’t technically need a lot of depth. Especially since the lime-green negative space surrounding them already makes the symbols pop, visually.
