Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

I don't believe this even exists anymore. I heard a bunch of teenagers blew it up. I'll have to come ov and see for myself. ;)

This is still one of my all time favorite threads. LOVE love love love this project brother!

Thanks...

Hoping to find the time to get back on it. As I've mentioned, I now coach four soccer teams a year (both kids, fall and spring), and my son's team won the south Orange County championship, which means we play again in early February. Then Spring soccer begins in March. And most of the past month has seen much time devoted to setting up the spring teams.

So not much down time in between. But I'm looking for time to work on it!

This is really cool!

I had to join just to write that as much as anything.

I'm in SoCal (Palmdale) as well, so I'm hoping you might be willing to let me take a bunch of photos in exchange for lessons in how to get good low light photos yourself. I have lights and a backdrop that we can use to get good clean shots. Even unfinished, I think it will be worth the time.

So you know I won't be wasting your time, here's a composite of three stock Hasbro X-Wings that I focus stacked from 170 shots on my Canon 5DmkII for completely sharp images with a stitched earth and a large starfield. A large wallpaper imperial destroyer and lasers were added to give it some life. Final size is 28,800 x 14,400, 414.7 Megapixels, 80 x 40 inches @ 360ppi.

I have a few other pictures of these X-Wings on my facebook page as well.

And if anybody has the new SS Tie fighter model, the same offer (plea) applies. That model is really amazing.

Good news - bad news...

Soccer is between seasons now and I have about six weeks to get over a major stick-point - the dish...

So the good news is I'm moving forward with this again, after nearly back-to-back fall and spring soccer seasons, and a complete workshop/garage re-model.

But the bad news is that after trying to sand down a few dish detail pieces, and fix just some that stood too proud, I've come to the conclusion (and Monsieux Tox's recommendation) that I'm simply ging to have to re-do it all.

Well, not all... The inner most and outer most rings are salvagable. Pretty much everything else will need to be sanded down and re-done.

Any good recommendations for material for the new detail pieces? I'm thinking about using leftover self-adhesive vinyl masking material I received from REL.

If there is a sign shop near you anywhere, ask them to buy some of their adhesive vinyl scraps. You'll probably want to use a material that has a stronger adhesive than a masking product.

Glad you're back at it... I've been missing this thread for a while now :)

The good news on redoing your dish is that you'll be THE dish expert when its over :). Hmmm... not sure if that's good or not... well its something ;)

Great to see this thread alive again. BTW I was in Seattle last week at a private party at the Sci-Fi and POP museum. I brought my “good” camera knowing I’d have all the time I wanted alone in the Sci-Fi wing. Only to find out the Death Star was GONE! Along with 75% of the Sci-Fi artifacts. They have completely re-worked (ruined) the museum. DISAPOINTED!!!

What!?

That may bear further investigation. Wonder if Gus took it back into his home...

Brad you will totally dig the remodeled shop - new flooring, all new cabinetry, cool stuff!

It would have been a crying shame if you hadn't gone back to work on it at some point. There has been nothing to match it as a Death star build any where and its superb build. I can understand the break,I've got several kits almost to the final painting stage that are just missing bits of detail or have things I just can't get right. Remember you owe it to THE WORLD to finish this one!No pressure then!!!!
