Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Every time I see the kit parts on the model before you hit the primer on it, I always feel doubtful about the consequence. But once you hit the primers, it turns out to be a perfect fit. That's why I love to see this build.

Same for me. It's amazing what they were able to do with these parts. How they were able to fit them together and everything works.

Awesome work on this replica!

Sick stuff as always Julien. And yeah well.. it may take a few years but hey I have a birthday every year, can't wait for my gift! :lol

Thank you guys ! I was thinking getting the cone of the engine CNC'ed but to save money, im going to try to scratch it !

Adolfo, Ive made some space !

Julien, do you mean the actual main engine bells? Its funny, working at LandRover, its an old building, with OLD lighting, and we have these huge halogen reflector domes.......i always look at them as if they were ISD engines........just made me wonder what ILM actually used, found item, or handcrafted bling?

Thank you very much guys !!

You know what's funny Julien, after I sent you the parts I was going to ask you to show me where you placed them so I could say"see those parts, those are my parts".:lol

Dave

Dave I'm so sorry, I used about 15 or so vintage Shinano on it and the hulls are cut in several pieces, so I have no clue where it is on the model (probably on the superstructures :p) but I can assure you yours parts are glued somewhere ! :lol

No I mean the small engine that goes inside the subassemblies I built !

Ah yeah I saw very similar domes in a store and in some parisian subway station (would have love to steal them !:lol).
I'm pretty sure they used one of them, the diameter is about 140mm. The only thing I know for sure is that they mold and cast them as I saw a pic with the mold and the master/pull next to it on a workbench.
I asked Lorne about that a while back but his reply was about the ANH ISD engine bells. :facepalm

Ouch, 15 vintage Shinano's, she sure sucks the donors eh Julien!.
I better not ask where my parts were placed then:lol

Engine sections looking sweet mate, great to see you still working on her when you can.

Ok some updates !

I built the conical engine bell masters for the secondary engines.

I built it myself to save some money but wasnt sure about the result... The first attempt was a disaster, it was way out of shape (couldnt get a perfect round shape lol).

So first I built this :

Then wrapped it with 4 layers of 0.5mm styrene. The 2 inner layers are shorter to create a lip.

Eventually I ended up with that :

I was very happy ! Almost perfectly round (Im sure it's rounder than the original :p), very strong and light.

Then I cut those 9 blocks. None of them are perfectly identical :

On the round plate, with some greeblies :

Dry fit :

Now I had to built the inner tube. Of course I didnt had the right diameter (33mm and I wanted 35.6mm) so once again I layered some styrene around it ! :)

Everything glued in place, ready for primer !

Light coat of primer (I had some air bubbles created at the edges of the lips, going to sand them).

Almost ready to pour rubber on it !

I'm very proud of it, when I started this part I have very little hope to be successful but I think it is !

I've got to stop looking at your thread Julien. I'm going through too many napkins to wipe up the drool, :) Man I love the work on this. So clean and precise. ILM needed you back in the day. When models were real and women were nervous, LOL . Cheers,

Joe

Thanks guys !

Haha Joe, I would have love to be in the team if only I was born... :p

I've molded and pulled some engine bells and installed them on the boxes I previously built :

As you can notice they fit waaaaay better than the ILM ones, there's no the huge 2 mm gap all around the bell on the top box ! :D Well to tell the truth I wanted to recreate this gap, however my cone is not narrow enough, it's a tad too wide where it meets the top box so it fill the entire cutout. Oh well it's noticeable where you're in front of them ! :facepalm

For the ones who followed this thread you may remember I built the master for the laser turrets. However I had one more part to build, the support of the guns.

8ft416_zps934cb24b.jpg

I also molded the guns because I need a ton of them (16 for the turrets and plenty of them for all over the trenches). I have enough real kitparts for the turrets but I dont want to run out of them so I did a mold, I'm not sure I'm going to buy more of those PoW kits since I only need them to detail the trenches and the leading edges of the hull so I will probably cast all the parts I need.

Well now the laser turret platforms... well at least the hero one ! :D Took me 3 days to build it and it's not finished yet :

The small black platform took me 3 hours to cut, fit etc... I thought that would be very quick to do but no.

I think most (if not all) of the lines of the platform were penciled, however I prefered to scribe the main lines. It will help to pencil the other lines.

Thank you !

I want to do as much as possible on her for 2013 even if I now I wont be able to finish her ! :) Still a long way to go !

That gun battery is a model all by itself. You must be very proud to see all of the pieces come to life. So are you up to a visit in April?

Beautiful Julien, love those gun batteries, so intricate. Still say you were born in the wrong era mate, your the one guy here id say, that would have been a driving force in the ILM workshop.
You need to get over to the UK RPF events sometime this year mate if you can.

lee

just be carefull when you install the power core, we wouldnt want the tiny little minions busy constructing the interior spaces to become impatient and start blasting those guns at you...

Just curious how many hours do you spent on building in a day Julien?
love your update on the ISD,keep on the magic work like you always do Julien:)
