This is what entropy looks like, people.

On the one hand, a new auction house clearly stocked with fakes, because conmen succeeded in selling their forged phaser in 2021.

On the other hand, an established auction house which doesn’t seem to care about integrity or authenticity, and lets 53-year-old man-children run around like idiots and treat artifacts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars like toys.

And breaking-then-hastily-repairing said artifacts.

To quote Ellen Ripley, did IQs just drop sharply?

On a tangentially-related note, I was recently discussing all of this with someone who provided perhaps the best summation of the whole mess:

Of all the fandoms out there, STAR TREK fans far and away seem to be the most eager to **** each other over.

This guy and these videos make me sad. I treat my COMIC BOOKS better than this. Cotton gloves, at LEAST, dude!
Yo, toss me that phaser...
i must break you dolph lundgren GIF

Supidity = mental entropy.

Like the NuTrek USS Vengeance.

So much for "Live long and prosper", right?

My photo source sent this, taken after one of the auction house employees dropped the rear fins on the ground.

I think we’re looking at a repair job, guys.

Harsh reality check:

STAR TREK is moving out of cultural relevancy. The core fanbase has largely aged out and/or moved away from the franchise, and no one cares about or watches the KurtzmanVerse in any appreciable numbers.

This auction will probably be one of the last big pushes for classic TREK artifacts. That’s also probably why certain parties are going full-scam mode, so they can strike while there’s still decent profit to be made, as interest drops, and the franchise begins to fade into the mists of history.

And, on a more fundamental level, these auction houses are a volume business. They don’t know or care about the history, and perpetuate urban legends and falsehoods (my source overheard them spouting tall tales, like how Majel Barrett had to make the uniform insignia patches herself, due to the show’s low budget).

They don’t revere or study these artifacts the way we do. If someone drops one while handling it, no biggie. Just glue it back together and make it presentable.
That looks like it needs a complete, professional restoration after seeing the condition it's in. Seriously, this is just plain criminal.

As for the franchise itself; very sad. It deserved better than this fate.

Who in hell is that idiot in the video?!
Dave Mandel, Seinfeld & Curb Your Enthusiam director and showrunner of Veep. Also (drumroll) co-writer of The Cat In The Hat movie! He co-presents The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, a podcast about movie props. There is a very good episode about Pulse Rifles with our very own Willie Goldman and Aliens info goldmine Harry Harris. There, I said something nice!

As a franchise Trek is doing fine. Picard season 3 was awesome for us older folks, and Strange New Worlds brings in the kids. But TOS is not getting the respect it deserves especially from the Heritage clown show.

It all makes me sick beyond belief...

The forgers ARE going to have yet another fake phaser going up for auction soon.

It's getting bad when ONE of the more questionable prop builders in the community is being honest. While these so-called experts associated with these auctions lie to our faces...

I don't even build phaser replicas, yet I could never let such a ****** repair job see the light of day.... I'd quit the hobby before making a repair that bad...

Trek as a Franchise is doing pretty good. I'd rather be a felcher than call Picard part of the Star Trek family....

Strange New Worlds is a fun alternate universe take on TOS....

TOS & DS9 are the best series in the franchise hands down.....

This Heritage Auction FEELS like it's being run by a bunch of conmen that aren't very good at their craft....
