Here are my thoughts about this cap that is up for auction:
1.The Nostromo Shoulder Patch -
Definitely an original, production made patch from the same printer. (I can write a lengthy essay on this topic alone...)
The placement of this patch however does not match any photo or screen shot. It is too high up, in the screen shots the bottom right corner nearly touches the visor...
2. The Scrambled Egg (SE) Patch -
These are the correct design (WWII era, American General Cap) 8 oak leafs and 5 acorns, but it is missing the 'Pearl purl' bullion thread that runs along each oak leaf and can be clearly seen in numerous publicity and screen shots.
What is “Pearl Purl”?! There are two main types of bullion threads -
- Purl [LINK] - can be smooth or rough (shinny or dull) - Are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube with a smooth surface.
- Pearl Purl [Also a Link] - Is a wire that is wound into a tight coil that looks like a strand of gold pearls. This type is more rigid.
3. The Hat -
Seams to be a mid profile as opposed to a higher profile in the film. The “Faded stitching” is odd especially since we can see that the thread holding the panels (this is a 6 panel hat) together is the same white pale color. And as
Indy Magnoli pointed out, it’s the other way around...
Notice the position of the shoulder patch, right corner almost touching the visor. Notice the construction and design of the SE, 8 leafs 5 acorns, each leaf has a thread of Pearl Purl on top of it as the ’Stem’ (missing from the hat for auction) .
Notice the high profile: and again the stems of the SE patches:
In this screen shot the Pearl Purl bullion can be seen crystal clear, poking up and out of the patch:
We also know that there were at least 2 used in production, the “Hero” cap that Harry Dean wears in most of his scenes. This second hat seen worn by a crew member. Not the same hat as the SE are placed closer to the crown of the hat... He is also wearing a Hawaiian shirt
Anyways, I just love this film, and have seen quite a few... questionable items being claimed as “screen worn originals”...
