2001 Monolith build

So far this winter has been a dry one as far as the snow goes.
I actually wanted to get a normal amount of snow so i could make the trip out to take a few photos of the Monolith about buried 1/2 up in a snow drift.

But so far this winter snow amount have been a let down.
And from time to time we get a warm day that melts snow and we end up with grass snowing!

Right now where I live there is a 50 mph wind blowing. most other years this would totaly shut down the whole state and I would be hunkered down. But due to a lack of snow its just another day here.

As for the current condition of the Monolith?
I made the right call and I positioned the Monolith so that the thinner side is aimed into the most common winds and that has worked well.
The huge amount of cement I dumped into the trench that holds the Monolith's legs and the direction the Monolith is turned means that even in this wind the monolith does not wobble.
This update makes me smile. I remember that intense base you built and was hoping all the digging was worth it.

On page 4 of this topic you can see this photo of where I planned to locate the Monolith.
I had my brother work out what compass heading was the direction of most winds where coming from..

The thin green board in the foreground is where he lined up and told me that my best bet would be to have the trench dug at this angle

Great! Now the E.T.s are going to zoom in on your property:p:p:cool::cool:
What I was thinking is that because of where I live we see all the student air pilots flying overhead all the time .
If it would only snow just a bit so that the black Monolith would stand out more then some of the guys overhead would start to notice it, and word of the Monolith would get passed around .

It would be cool to see the students flying over the Monolith.
It might make the news one day...LOL

Then I could act all surprised in an interview -

"A black monolith?....I dont know what you are talking about?....that thing just showed up one morning about the same time as I started to notice some rabbits around here were standing upright and carrying stuff"

"Well, let's go look. There have been some strange sounds out back, now that you mention it."

on a side note:

I just was kicking around the idea of shooting a short video this summer,,,,where I add the 2001 soundtrack of the apes waking up to the monolith in the movie...

But have it a bunch of teddy bears....

Or a bunch of Barbie dolls?
(I did not see that movie but I heard about it)

or........?

Well, I don't know what kind of critters you have around your property, but it would be nice to photograph some locals around the Sentinel;)(y)(y)

it was the first day in the 50s today, so I put on my muck boots and walked into the woods to see what shape the Monolith was in as in a month is will be 1 year old.

it looks like the back side of it needs another coat of paint, but the viewing side is in more or less great shape.
because the far side of the Monolith takes all the heat from the summer sun I am now considering the use of a bed-liner paint to help it stand up to that type of summer heat.

Well, the Monolith went through its first winter with flying colors...it seems.:cool:(y)(y) Not much snow in your neck of the wood, unlike Ottawa, Canada where I'm still shoveling the white crap:(:(:mad:

My winter was a real let down...the snow and the cold was a no-show.

Even as I write this on 3/10/2025 there are lots of people just a little to the north and south of us that still might get dumped on with this last blast of winter....
But here?.....nothing.
I watch the radar and its like the clouds seem to split and go around us?
Its a concern for me as I own a little wine vineyard and we always need a lot of rain in the spring to get things going on the right foot.

Now as far as the maintenance of the Monolith after this first winter goes..
It needs fresh paint on the south side that gets all the summer sun.
I am really thinking about getting that "Bed Liner" type paint that is used on pickup trucks to see if that might offer a bit more protection to the sun?
I need to try to find a video of that stuff being painted in a sign or something that looks like the monolith to see how it works?
Other than that south side painting, the Monolith is ready to.....um....entertain guests?
