Yuma/Hero build thread

I've been having a few thoughts on Luke's hero and thought I'd share them here. Not sure if anyone else has suggested this before, but I thought it was an interesting idea... Could the design of the box for the cave scene Hero be symbolic of the underlying story of ROTJ and Luke's struggle to stay on the right path? The two arrows I mean? Could it have been implying that Luke's new saber had the capability of igniting a red blade?? Just as Luke had the potential of being turned towards the end of the film? Maybe I'm overthinking it! :D

Idk but that’s a damn cool idea

I always thought of it as:
Green=GO blade out
Red=STOP blade off

I always assumed Luke to be fairly utilitarian :p
To be honest, so did I.

I re-watched the cave scene again today though, and it's kind of interesting how it's flicking between the two as Vader's trying to tempt him to the dark side. He resists him, then flicks it to green before igniting it, with the green blade. Then gives R2 a little nod. It was just a thought. That scene definitely has a symbolic feel to it though. Maybe I'm way off with the arrows, but it'd be a nice touch. :)

Little bit of progress today...

Got the grenade sections and booster painted:

Sanded down the rings on the Yuma with rough sandpaper to take the paint off and then some fine stuff to get rid off the scratches on the rings:

Because I used printer label material to make my stencil, I had to remove any left over glue with soapy water. Didn't take any of the paint off though, so that was a relief. I then scuffed up the paint edges and surface a bit with scotchbrite pads. I still intend on weathering the booster paint further, so this is just a WIP still obviously:

For the weathering on the grenade section, I carefully scratched off using a Stanley blade to match the available references. Quite happy with how that turned out. I think I'll probably use a mixture of these two techniques for the neck and emitter. Stencils for large sections, and Stanley blade for smaller scratches.

I've made a start on the neck for the Hero! Really digging the colour. I *might* give it a light dusting of copper before removing the mask though. Might do a test on some scrap first, and do some side by side comparisons with the reference photos.

*edited* Try photographing with warm indoor lighting too. Photograph it that way and see if the red tone is present due to lighting... that’s kind of how the ACE paint is. It throws you for a loop and it’s purely lighting/color/surface interaction. Worth consideration since the Hero prop also reflects differently in different lighting sets *edited*

Tell me about it. I've been colour correcting some of the references to try and get an idea of the actual colour. Looks very different depending on where it is/type of film used/age of photo etc. The hero prop seems to have been cleaned up/repainted at some point too! :rolleyes: So tricky. Some of the Yuma shots are under a red canopy too. Lol. I'll post my findings once I've done a little research. I really am digging the one I've bought though. Even if it does end up being a base.

Hey thanks. Don't worry, I've studied Seth's Lightsaber guide religiously! :D It's awesome!

I just got mixed up with which shared stunt was used as the basis for the Yuma. I figured it must be the V2 due to the similar paint job. I've still not managed to find a picture of the V3 with the speckled paint work (which is driving me crazy).

Yeah I hear ya! The lineage of this prop has so many parts to it. That’s why I love the diagram...a picture’s worth a 1000 words.

Little experiment...

I was convinced the bronze gold I bought needed a little more copper, so I tried a little test on some aluminium plate.

Added a light dusting of Rustoleum copper, then did a second light dusting.

On reflection though, I think it's a closer match on its own:

I'm thinking maybe it just needs dirtying up afterwards with some boot polish maybe? Might give that a go.

God that neck color is hard. It looks very goldenrod to me - moving away from the silvery/gold that a lot of rattle cans are, into a more yellow-y version

Like it looks like a dirty version of the yellow on Fett's helmet.

Also, given the reference you posted, it appears the Yuma blade collar has 3 actual headed screws. Like pan heads or dome heads

I can confirm the yuma collar doesn’t have 3, that’s reflection of light and shadows

are you able to confirm if its like the hilt nipple with only one? :D

quick change really

hey why is there like string through the D ring hole?! (see chin shot)
