What If?: a new Wizard Of Oz movie....

Todd McFarlane actually did some redesigns of the OZ characters for his Twisted Oz story and expressed an interest in doing a film version, but doing it his way would probably fall into more of a bondage type film. I'm sure some of you have seen them.
I would not be interested in seeing Tim Burton make any film anymore. But thats just my opinion. I think the best way to go would be to make a straight adaptation of the original book.

I liked Tin man. i think with a higher budget and better writers/director etc (and some tweaks) it could make a great big screen adaptation. It had some unique and innovative twists, needs work as it had some really bad bits too

So many of these remakes have worked out so well, so why not?

Because it stupid that's why not.

Once something reaches the type of status that WOZ has, you leave it the hell alone.

I don't know. I like the idea of a new take that's more in line with the book, like how the land of OZ is real and not just some dream in the end. But most importantly, we can have a much stronger Dorothy character that's more in line from the books.

Couple that with the fact that it won't be a musical, you might as well say that they'll be two different films. I say SCREW WOZ'S STATUS and try again. It's not going to do anything to the original, so what's the point? I own the big BluRay box set of the original and I enjoy it very much, but no matter how much I think back on the books, it always leaves me wondering "There could have been something more there".

Well, with that line up, how can we not make something better and worthwhile?

Well, maybe you're not getting what I'm saying. How about this: "If its not broke, don't fix it." And I can name a lot more remakes that failed to do the story justice but only improved on the technical aspects. For example, the "Dawn of the Dead" remake was only superior when it came to the special effects, make up, and production design with the mall. But the story sucked @$$ (especially with the flat characters and the unrealistic "everyone jumping on the bandwagon" after the Ving Rhames "Better them than me" speech). Rob Zombie's "Halloween" is another example. Again, the production design was great, but Rob Zombie screwed it up big time by getting it into his head that the story was about Michael Myers, and didn't even give the audience any reason to feel sorry for Laurie and her friends. And I can name a few more, too.

Now, look at productions that were remakes of original films where things didn't work. No offense to any old-school fans, but the original "Battlestar Galactica" was nothing more than running and fighting the Cylons each week. Now, look at the re-imagined BSG: it's not about fighting the Cylons. It's about the struggle for survival, the questioning of what it is to be human especially in an inhuman time, the ongoing struggle of what is right and what is wrong, amongst other things.

When it comes to the "Wizard of Oz", the original film is considered successful and doesn't need to be messed with. In short, "if it's not broke, don't fix it."

You seem to be attached to the idea that making a movie about the Wizard of Oz that sticks to the roots of the original book will just be a remake to the original 1939 movie. It won't be at all. We're not fixing something that's broken because these will be two very different films. It won't be a musical, it won't have red ruby slippers, it won't be all in a dream and Dorothy will be a much more capable character than just a helpless observer.

Again, nothing is broken and I wouldn't do this to fix anything from the original. The original is absolutely fine for what it is, but what it is isn't what made the book stand out.

Then it wouldn't the Wizard of Oz. Call it something else.

Plenty of other storied out there to make. All you need is the guts to make them.

It would be horrid. It would be filled with vapid teenagers, probably the songs would sound like generic pop, and the lines would all be rewritten to be hip and trendy. I don't even like the original but some things need to be left alone. This is an era where the bar in Cassablanca would be a strip joint now instead of a small hole in the wall. I think America's too morally bankrupt to produce a good remake of movies that aren't slasher films.

Might as well remake it, nobody out there seems to have the ability to come up with anything unique these days....

:lol Yikes! I just looked it up. So much for being "original":lol

I'll have to check it out. Which one did you think was better?

Robert

The original. And there's a sequel to it which is just as equally good by the same people involved with the first one.
