TOS Type II Phaser Replica (my final attempt (no, really))

I took care of that last thing without too much fuss, but now I have another problem. The fins the kit came with just don't sand smooth very well at all. Looks all jaggedy still despite my best efforts. And the metal replacement part is made specifically for the DST, it's just all kinds of wrong.
What to do? Make them from scratch out of sheet styrene. I just got back from the store with the 1.5mm sheet. I have the 1mm for the spacers already from working on the P1.
AdmiralBaxter, you were right... AGAIN!
The fins from the phaser you repainted look fine.

And like I said you can correct the issues on the spacing with fins from JPL...

How many times do I have to remind you that those "made specifically for the DST" fins with work with most kits. they were designed before the 3D print was made

If you are going to make them from scratch anyway why not just use aluminum strips like on the original? That way you give them a quick sand and they look great. I think they should have sheet aluminum at the hobby/hardware store.
I think he said he doesn't have the tools to properly cut aluminum. IF he did I'm sure he would.

Nope, they didn't have 1.5mm sheet aluminum or even 1mm. Also, without proper metalworking tools, sheet aluminum bends as you cut it. Then you have to epoxy it separately piece by piece or it slides around. Not up for those headaches when an easier choice that really will look just as fine is available.

No, they WON'T! They are too thick! JPL made them for DST conversion. And they worked well on mine. But this is a level of accuracy you can't get with a mere DST conversion....

It should also be noted that there's a conspicuous dent in the brass handle, right where a big chunk of paint has flaked off. We know the cracked P2 forehead came from bring dropped, and it looks like the handle damage may have, too.

You really don't need much in the way of tools to cut and shape aluminium that thin - a jigsaw to rough it out and some variety of power sander to finish will get you there without much issue
Yeah, but I mostly build styrene & resin kits. The biggest power tool I own is a small dremel. Trust me, the way I'm doing it will look fine.
Most of the metal parts your using are for DST conversion......
And I have to convert them all! Even the side release was wrong. And I got a new nozzle from SyFyProps. This one will be my best & last. Unless it goes south unexpectedly.

Don't say that!!

Nothing is certain. But all IS going according to plan, mostly. Won't be done by Friday, though. Rushing a project to the finish line is a bad thing....

Did the fitting & final sanding on the fins. Also some fine tuning on the P2 body including laying in spacers for the final assembly, but a second paint coat will be needed, that's tomorrow after the 48 hr mark from the first.
It'll be done by mid-next week with any luck.
