Time Bandits (Apple TV series)

Well, it's...something.

I saw the original during its theatrical run with my father and uncle (RIP).

+1 that they kept Kevin, his family, and Evil all British.
-1 that Waititi is in it (sorry, he should stick to IG-11 IMO)

Looks like they are expanding on the original film storyline, but basically telling the "same" story/ same story beats and scenes.

But everytime Lisa Kudrow speaks, I just keep hearing Phoebe from Friends.

I'm getting the Willow TV mini-series vibes... promising trailer, but flat in execution. We shall see.

just about every frame of that trailer looks uninspired compared to the original. There’s no apparent narrative “energy” - just a series of gags. Big meh.

Well looks like they scrubbed out all the quirky humor and comradery from the original film, and added a 'diverse' range of 'bandits' to appeal to as wide as audience as possible, then added lame jokes written by a comity to be as 'appealing' as possible.

I don't have AppleTV, and this does not make me want to go out and buy it.

(To the theme of the 1967 Spider-man cartoon)

Current Day,
Current Day,
The audience loves Current Day.
Gonna see ratings galore, working on that DEI score.
Watch out here comes the Current Day.........

What the Hell is going on, on this Planet ?

Time Bandits was the single greatest example of how to have an entire cast of small actors without it being about them being small. This show was the vehicle that small actors have been *begging for* for decades. And yet they decided to flip them all the bird and cast regular actors instead. In the name of diversity? I am utterly baffled.

The show just doesn't feel exciting or fun.

It's as if people had asked an AI to make something in the style of Taika Waititi. An AI can mimic a style, but does not understand what it is that makes something good.

I wanted to like this, as I am a huge fan of the original, but gave up ten minutes into episode 2 after slogging through the pilot. I'm a huge Taika/Jemaine fan AND a kiwi, so you'd think the deck would be stacked in their favor, but wow between the absolutely terrible, ham fisted writing, the dialog sounding like AI penned expository nonsense, and the kudrow performance just totally taking me out of every moment... I gave up. You can't have a show where EVERY character is a quippy, clever comedian waiting for their moment to shine with their peculiar brand of quirk.

Production values are great, things look good, the kid actor is pretty charming and I would say I related to him and his plight, but for me that's where the positives end. I think Taika is still thinking Thor:Ragnarok was him being granted a license to unhinge in every future production, and he has not recovered creatively since. This feels a lot like Love and Thunder tonally, and it suffers for it.

I think Lisa Kudrow is great in roles that she is properly cast in. She is of course legendary in Friends, while Romy & Michelle was a perfect, on brand side-step for her. This material does not suit her strengths, and because she is such a big star, her one-note performance both detracts from the overall experience and serves as the tonal center for it. Which is a bummer.

Same. It's literally the same deadpan comedy show Taika always makes, this time pasted onto a Time Bandits backdrop. Indistinguishable from what we do in the shadows, or our flag means death.
It's funny at times, but in a generic Friends way. It's not memorable, and certainly not compelling like the original. It's such a shame, because Time Bandits would be perfect for an episodic series, with every episode being a different place and time. But this show jumps through time holes every thirty seconds or less, just so a new historical character can do the same gag formula again. It makes me sad.
