Strider/Aragorn build

Just finished watching the color grading documentary again so I want to share some examples of the changes in color and which scenes to not trust for original colors. Since coloring was not consistent across the film, prop colors are also not consistent per scene.

Check out the Boromir with Peter in full sunlight, ungraded, then the council Boromir in poor light but ungraded and then graded. Vast changes to his blue over tunic vest (not sure of the historical name of this piece).

Oddly, things that are green-gray do not seem to be affected much but tans and browns swing wildly. Very light colors gain red, green or blue easily as would be expected but the surprise is that black will do the same, going from dark jet black velvets to very red, green or blue, sometimes brown.

When colour grading, you can colour select and also only change dark, mids and light so if you adjust the lift (shadows) down to green it'll give shadows a green hue. Everything looks warmer with the shadows leaning to green. Once my Aragorn is finished, I intend on filming some scenes and look forward to playing with the colour grading.

I don't mean to pander but I went back over your pictures of completed pieces again tonight and just wow. This is truly an incredible Aragorn build. This is legit screenworthy stuff.
I really, I really appreciate it man! It's a slog and I have a month left for his first outing. I've started the jerkin and coat but I'm on vacation as of Wednesday so wont have any updates until the end of the month.

That looks great, is it real leather? Really impressed with your skill in tailoring as well! Do you have alot of experience with that?
Agreed, these finished works in cloth and in leather are all coming from the hands of someone who seems to have a lot of experience. If not, the level of inspect, correct and inspect again is phenomenol.

Yes, it's suede.

My ex wife was a fashion designer so I've been around and have some external knowledge of pattern cutting and how sewing machines work but this is my first project where I've made pieces of clothing entirely from scratch.

Thanks! It's been completely trial and error to be honest. I cut up an old sweater and adapted to get the pattern for the vest and coat. I'm tweaking my shirt to get the smocking neater and to be a better fit. Appreciate all the kind words!

I have experience in leather, such as holsters etc. So I was a little more at home with the bedroll, quiver etc. I've started the bracers too for the end of the Fellowship look. But as stated above it's my first time making a garment from scratch.

I have yet to take on the bracers but need it for both Boromir and Aragorn so it happens at some point. Does anyone feel ultra confident that they have the right pattern? I have seen a lot of one piece units where the original is more complex.

That's great man it looks like you have more experience than you say. And kudos to you for just going ahead and doing it for the first time.
I'm actually planning to make the witch kings cloak and tunic and whatnot myself, got a pattern from Simplicity which I will use. But I literally have 0 experience sewing.. luckily I can enlist the help of my mother, who is pretty handy with a sewing machine.

But regardless I notice I am putting of that part of the build probably due to it being unknown territory for me. It's about 25 meters of cotton I have lying around waiting to be cut into patterns, but it is a pretty daunting task.

Really cool that you make stuff out of leather as well. I have just made my very first (pretty sloppy) buckle strap for my pauldrons out of a leather strap and roller buckles. Have to start somewhere lol

Leather just looks wonderful and covers so many errors. I have tried to use faux and it is just very difficult to get a good looking finished product.

I was terrified to start my cloak, as it was just SO much fabric and as it had to be double width was expensive. Just go slightly bigger than you think, can always slim it down but can’t add more on. I took my jerkin in twice to get the fit right.

My pattern ain’t right but I started them ages ago so will finish them off and then maybe redo them to be more accurate later down the line.

I have 3d modeled some accurate buckles and will be casting them in pewter hopefully at the weekend

Thanks!

Well, with your wife having experience as a fashion designer, you're one giant step above everybody else:cool::cool:(y)(y):love:

I just want to clarify something so the thread isn't derailed! There's no need for the sad faces, I just wanted to specify, as in all the years we were together she made no effort to teach me anything and therefore deserves no merit in anything I have created. I was simply stating that because of that relationship I have a basic knowledge of pattern cutting and sewing. I put a laughing emoji after that reply to show it was jovial but it didn't appear for some reason, which completely changes the context of the reply! I appreciate everyone's support through this build, without it I would have given up, so I don't want to come across as rude or anything..

All the items I've made so far, I used rudimentary techniques to work out the pattern and not something that someone doing it 'properly' would do. For the shirt, I drew the yoke and pattern onto a big white tee shirt and cut it out. For the vest and coat I adapted an old sweater. Everything was then altered through trial and error to ensure a correct fit. As mentioned above, I made everything on the big side so I could alter it to get a good fit to what I was wanting. If you're new to sewing, I'd suggest doing the same. I didn't make any mock-ups because I'm lazy and impatient haha!

Also, I have a wonderful, beautiful and supportive girlfriend that will be accompanying me as Arwen, so like I said, no need for any sad faces.

To which, I say, bring it bro. You are crushing this on a level not seen before by me and I am seriously a fan of LOTR and Aragorn. For the number of times I have watched the extended edition dvd documentaries, I should have every stitch memorized. It was the reason it was so daunting a task but this thread makes me really kick it in gear and gather up my supplies. I have Boromir in a pile in the garage, still folded materials with the patterns right there ready to go. Odd, but your successes are cheering me on. Joberg knows well enough the number of cosplays I have injected to give excuse to not finish Boromir.
