Star Trek Picard Season Three

Yeah, but how does it work, though? Do you pump vigorously to recharge the battery before every shot? That doesn't seem to work because her battery was depleted after like 2 shots. Maybe Bev's just not that good at handj... errr... pumping a rifle. :p

It must work like a Super Soaker…?

Endlessly rehashing and referencing TWOK is a hallmark of NuTREK, because all they know is, “People love that one, so let’s constantly reference and copy it!”.

Sigh.

Hmmmmm…on that note, I am wondering if Beverly Crusher is being placed in the estranged Carol Marcus role along with “new guy” being placed in the David Marcus role…

I can see it now...

Picard slumped on the ground, his face full of shock and grief.

"Son'a b*****d, you killed my son... Son'a b*****d...*

…this sounds more and more like pure nostalgia/Memba berries serving as an apology, and the bias of low expectations, with many of the usual leaps in logic to serve the plot.

I mean, Picard hanging onto his TNG commbadge, which can receive a coded signal from far, far away? Really, why would he keep it? Why would it not be turned in and replaced with the GENERATIONS commbadge prior to that film? Is it not Starfleet equipment, rather than personal property?

This is like how Luke’s Graflex lightsaber only really meant something to US, the audience, and went on to be treated as this iconic object of reverence in the counterfeit Disney movies. Because the writing was done from the outside in, with an emphasis on fannish and illogical elements, instead of internal logic.

And so on.

And the batteries must be everlasting as well.

Oh right, this is Trek we’re a communicator is charged forever, but a blaster is only good for two shots, if the scripts needs it to be.

One of the things which made Real TREK great is that, while fanciful, its technology had a basis in scientific theory, and there were established rules and limitations to it. There’s a reason why TREK tech and manuals and discussions became the basis for an entire subculture of the larger fandom.

NuTREK tech, on the other hand, is built on plot contrivances and nonsense. Technobabble designed to sound smart, but which is actually stupid and meaningless. Transwarp beaming, death-curing Khan blood, magic mushroom engines which allow instantaneous travel anywhere, etc.

I lost count of the number of times TNG used the deflector dish to invert a neutrino field and reverse the polarity of snarfblatgarblegook whatever. Technobabble has always been part of Trek, and let's face it, matter/energy conversion might as well be magic given the way these shows have always treated it.

That being said, I really didn't care for the way the Abrams movies treated the universe or its tech rules.

I enjoyed it immensely. It’s not flawless to be sure, but Trek never is. The writing on this is vastly better than Strange New Hair, and I loved the Picard and Riker Show. Hopefully James Cawley will be proven right, and this will be the eighth season of TNG. I see no reason after the first episode to dismiss that notion. Oh, and as I’m staring down the barrel of 60 myself, the aging jokes absolutely landed with me. Very well done.

I just hope they'll keep references to Seasons 1 and 2 (Android Picard, Data's daughters, different generations of Soongs, JuratiBorg) to a bare minimum. That way if Season 3 does indeed turn out good, we can all pretend this is actually the first season. Of course it will be instantaneously and irreparably ruined if (a) Wesley Crusher turns up as the Traveller or (b) we get another musical sequence like Jurati's in Season 2.

Picard and his Romulan hottie had conversation about how he Beverly had tried to have a relationship once. I bet you he will be Picard‘s son.

They keep repeating the fact that the last time Picard and Crusher had contact was 20 years ago (I'm guessing right after Nemesis), but Ed Speelers doesn't look like a 20-something. Unless of course he spent all that time in Tatooine.

I’m calling it here….Worf is Raffi’s “handler”.

Go back and watch the scene where she is communicating with her handler, via text on a screen….for a split second, whenever you see the “handler” respond her, the text is in Klingon and quickly converts to English.

The “handler” also uses “Worf terms” such as “You are a Warrior”…

That makes perfect sense. Glad I’m not the only one dropping spoilers.

I was hoping it's Lore.

I don't hate Wesley, and while I don't have a TREMENDOUS like for the character, I do rather like Wil Wheaton. So when he got to be on it, I was happy for him, as he plainly got a great kick out of it. Not that I watched the episode, I had bailed by then.
Being host of Ready Room, well, even if he didn't like the show he couldn't very well say so, could he? I noticed (in what little I watched of it) he tended to speak with the actors as a fellow Trek actor, and on that level it was a fair approach to take.
