Scanff's First Build

i had a little bit of a puff with one of my foamies but lucky for me it was a piece thats hidden and it was because I'd sprayed a little to much on the one part.   Light, thin coats is the only thing I can say to try prevent that happening again.

Here's a few updates.

First I fixed what I could with the backpack, it still needs weathering and I'm about 70% sure I'll redo it if time permits.

I started working on the feet. I purchased a camping mat cut three layers glued them together for the insert. I plan to add a zipper for easy access and glue in a pair of shoes as the feet are massive. I also glued foam board and the camping mat foam together and covered them in several coats of rubber spray then attached them to the bottom of the feet. I've purchased some shoe soles size 15 (biggest I could find) and plan to glue these to the bottom for grip.

I just finished up one of many necklaces I'm adding to the suit. This one is coyote teeth and toe bones which I found on ebay for cheap. I'm waiting on my animal skulls to arrive for the main necklace build.

Thanks for looking,

This is something Im trying to keep an eye out for, Ive been looking for fake skulls and fake bone necklaces but it seems that fake generally turns out more expensive.   not having a lot of luck to be completely honest

I've seen that fake skulls are more expensive.  I've got a real mink and coyote skull coming soon.  My concern with real skulls is how fragile they are so I'm going to spray them with clear rubber or urethane, hopefully that will make them a bit more durable.

The teeth and toe bones on that necklace were pretty cheap, I think 100 coyote teeth were around $10 and the toe bones about the same.

I've used real bone on costumes before and have never had an issue with them.  I put a varnish coating on them to keep any part of them from flaking.  That, however,  gave them a more natural tan/yellow weathered look instead of the whitened bone Predators wear.  Depending on where you wear the bones, they shouldn't be too hard to keep.  I once wore a bird skull necklace for a few years and never had it break.  And that thing was super fragile!  Just make sure it's not in a place it would hit up against anything.

You're making good progress, the backpack still looks pretty good!  Did you seal the foam before spraying?  I've had those thin foamies curl really badly on me in the past when I didn't seal them first.  Sealant makes them more rigid, but for a hard piece like the armor or the backpack it might be the way to go.

I glued the foamies down with hot glue and put a coat of plastic dip on top.  I probably should have used contact cement for better coverage but did not think it through very well.  At least it was good practice :)

Glad you were able to fix the backpack. Necklace also looks great. I was looking at the coyote bones and teeth the other day.

Unfortunately I've been busy with other stuff the last few weeks.

I started painting my feet and now have a disturbing collection of animal and human skulls ;) I'm hoping to get some time this weekend.

It's been a while since I posted an update, my work has been crazy.

I've committed to a charity Halloween event so I'm using every spare minute to finish the suit. I can't wait to scare the kids, lol.

First I switched to a closed mouth P1. Here's a couple of pictures. Sorry my camera is not the best.

The torso is pretty much done. I need to add armor and more netting.

I made quills using bake and bend, they are a little hard to see on my camera.

Due to my height 6'7" I had to cut the legs off the Mr I suit. I sewed the legs to a pair of shorts and latex them. Once the armor is on I'm hoping the seam is not too noticeable.

I will post more pictures once I have it all put together and try it out.

This is awesome!! Everything looks great! What type of paint do you use for the mask? The mask is latex isn't it?

So I tried the pro method of naphtha/rubber cement and artist oils.  I found the colors too dark and obviously it's nasty toxic. I experimented with acrylics and added liquid latex (clear) to them. The base coats were probably 50% latex and 50% acrylic, I applied these with a brush and sponge. I found cleaning the latex from the brush after every application stopped the bristles from getting too sticky, I used a damp rag and wiped the brush through it.

For some of the detail I used an airbrush with a less potent mix, probably 10% liquid latex. You have to be fast once the latex starts drying it will jam up the airbrush. Cleaning it was a pain.

I know that some people have also used prosaid and acrylic inks. You can get it at monstermakers.com. It probably is faster than mixing your own.

I've not seen any cracking on the mask yet and have put it on a few times. It should last through Halloween.

I see..The problem I have now is that I'm from Malaysia and Monstermakers doesn't ship to Malaysia unless the order is more than USD250, and I only want to buy the 5 color 4lb set. And it's really hard for me to source out prosaide and liquid latex (ironically, Malaysia is one of the largest exportes of rubber in the world) here. My only option is to go with the rubber cement + oil paint + naphtha route. I haven't tried it yet but I'm reading mixed reviews of using this..I'm planning to try it out later this evening.
Anyway, thanks for the tip, can't wait to see the final outcome of your suit!

So I finally got a zipper on the torso and decided to try out the fit. It's a little tight, I must have put on a couple of pounds from the time I started :/ Anyway besides it being hot I could move around pretty well. My wife snapped a picture I'll post below. I'm hoping to try out the whole suite this week and do the final touch-ups, so hopefully more to come soon.
