Now i have the ironman theme going round in my head.

thanks ggrrrrr :p

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

Here's a example of el sheet for eyes.

why do LEDs for the eyes when the real deal was EL sheet

LEDS are cheap and easy to wire up but if your going to as close to the original as possible, and it looks like you are, then you might do a version
with sheet and driver to get as close to the original as possible

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

Rich used EL sheets for his first helmet and believe me... They worked extremely well!

It was a pretty simple and ingenious way of doing it, to light them up and see through them at the same time. Worked great.

He's got something up his sleeve this time, I'll bet. :D

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

Can you see out of the helmet? I guess the question I have, is how would you see out of it, if there were EL, or LED's lighting up the eyes?

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

Maybe it's a camera trick, but the cast looks a lot smaller than the black master.

its no camera trick, the black one is the sculpt and it has a ring around its neck for molding purposes so its sitting about an inch or so above the others

hi Bats.

do you have any evidence od the el sheet being used? Im not saying you wrong at all, its just I have been told that they used leds?

also, thanks all for the positive comments

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

Looks great, fettster.
I'm looking forward to seeing one compete.

the trick is to leave "spyholes" which you can cover with either tinted perspex or black mesh.

here is a pic of my last helmet with el eyes. photographed great but wasnt bright enough in my opinion

Actually, I've looked at hundreds of screencaps and publicity photos and behind the scenes photos of the physical suit (the one this helmet is based off of).

There were at least five different Mk. III helmets and two Mk. II helmets. Four of the five Mk. III and one of the Mk. II helmets had seven LEDs per eye; the last two had six per eye. I'm working on a diagram for Fettster and TMP ATM, and will make it available for everyone soon after.

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

I'll work on it after my final tomorrow; you'll have it in your inbox either tomorrow after 8 or Tuesday, unless something comes up. It's gonna include reference images, not just a diagram.

that would be great.

good luck with your finals

my evidence would be that I spent about 8 hours with one of the hero suits looking it over and talking about most of the finer details with guys that worked on it and they never mentioned LEDs to me and I didn't really ask cause I was more interested in the form of the suit. I even looked over the driver that was mounted inside both the helmet and the chest cavity

Im sure there could be LED versions of the helmet like ceric said cause all the prop shops I know do ten different things so that they get 100 different effects for the camera, but of the one I was with , it was sheet eyes

and you do not look thru the eyes, you actually look from right under them
there are eye holes that start about 1/16 of an inch below the lense eyes, it was very very well done and ingenious in its ability to be hidden when in plain sight

both the chest and eyes were sheet with a specialized reflector material plastic to reflect the light forward
so well done was it that it actually glows under normal lighting even when its off, much like road reflectors do

the eyes are not square they are angled at each end
which is a particular kind of shape which the geometry name escapes
my mind at the moment

the other way they accomplished the eyes is that they are double socket-ed
which sets them back without them looking as though they are
sadly this was removed when sideshow made the 1:1 bust, its also
slightly smaller then the original by about about 1/16 overall which is
only the shrinkage from the silicone so thats not bad compared to other
production pieces that have gotten alot smaller

the other thing they missed is the specilized finish thats on all the brass painted areas
so that it looks like real brass, the SS bust has a painted look to it, doesnt have the depth
to the finish the real one does

best way to show that is the socket bolts on the colar bones are the exact
same size as a quarter, for fun and laughs when I was messing with the suit
I laid a quarter in there do get a laugh..... lucky I got one and people didnt
think I was trying to be a dink~

I was overly impressed with how much thought and engineering went into each and every inch of the suit

and the most impressive thing is the shoulders and abdomen and spine btw
the helmet is just icing on the cake compared to the other points
of wickedness

Fettster, great work!
You said you did it from scratch and used filler.
That's the same technique I used to make mine.
Do you have any pics of the WIP?
I'm curious! :D
It's great to hear that someone has been as crazy as I've been trying to pull this miricle out :D

The details on this new version is way better then the first one!
Can you just slip it on your head or are you planning to cut it somewhere?
Also, did you think about the part that goes under the chin?
I'm still thinking about it.

Awesome work there ;)

bet it must have been nice to see the real suit.

i have the visibility sorted, i was happy with the first system i designed but the new one is much more advanced.

im going to stick with the leds, I am using this pic as my muse
eyelights.jpg

i dont know if these lenses a cgi or practicle but you can clearly see the frash off from the led at the edges.

as for the sideshow bust, its not smaller because of silicone shrinkage because silicone doesnt shrink. I was told that it was purposly made smaller from the original cad files so that it couldnt be recast and used as a wearable helmet.

its all good info tho so thanks for taking the time to post in such detail.

thanks pal.

I have been following your progress and im really impressed with your efforts so far.

I took a different approach to you and didnt take that many progress shots but here is what i have.

you cant slip it on you head as i wanted it snug to the neck piece (when i ever get round to doing it)

the movie helmet had a separate back piece and mine is the same.

I got the little chin detail on mine.

the first one is being painted today so il try and get some pics up today

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

You're NUTS! :D
Man...I would DIE if I had to sand all that filler!!!
But hey! Hard work usually repays you! And certainly has repaid you!
Sometimes I wonder...is there anything on this board that cannot be done? :D

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

who told you that silicone doesnt shrink? LOL
if you look on any silicone MSDS you'll see that it shrinks
all materials do to some degree as they cure and age

same with people for that fact LMAO!!

it was amazing to see the real thing in person
it opened your eyes to how much can be hidden when done properlly

that photo as your muse is heavily modified around the eyes
because at that angle you would see the eye cutouts and the double
sockets

and since its only 3% smaller that is not enough to keep it from being wearable, it will be very easy for someone to get one of them and mold it and pop a wearable version

I would love to post all the pics I took but I signed something that said I wouldn't otherwise I would put up a pic showing you how they did it

but atleast on the SS they kept the double set sockets

how they mixed hard fiberglass pieces with soft urethane pieces and the clothe undersuit were so well combined that if your standing 15 feet away they combine perfectly to pull the design together

its only when your up close that you are surprised as to what pieces are hard and what are soft beyond the obvious choices

the one I saw was a partial hero as the wrist rocket was functional on it
trigger the servo and the plate pulls back and up reveling a rocket tip

I have heard a rumor that the morrons over at bronze armory might get the chance to offer copies of the suit straight out of the original molds with authorization from SWStudios.... I doubt its a real rumor.... more then likely that they will just recast a fanmade suit and say its real, just like they do with all their stuff

anyways

what I didnt know till today is that there were different head designs for the iron monger and that it was changed at the last second
makes me wonder what other versions there were of the mark 1 2 3
