I love this prop.

I bought one from Heidi, the jeweler who made it for the film.

Its one of my favorites, sadly, my wife stole it. And it is now part of her jewelry collection. She gets complimented on it all the time when she wears it, people freak when she tells em what it is.

Re: MiB Orion's Belt

Whoa, those photos are great Moff! THANKS! I might do a couple revisions after those, even if the proportions of the full-size are hard to directly reduce in size. :thumbsup

I was a bit undecided as to whether or not I wanted to cast in the first large ring for the chain as it kinda looks different in a couple shots, but I might go back and add it now.

+1 for a run for these :D:cheers

Well, I will at least be able to supply a few folks with the main silver parts from extras and such. Something will be arranged. :thumbsup But I want to at least get a prototype done before releasing anything...

I was actually steeling myself for the possibility that these would super-hard to put together but a pair of needle-nose pliers ended up saving the day!

Ok, guys... first version is finished! Pretty happy with the result, though I should have used solid wire but I was in a hurry and my local hobby place only had the tubing!

In total it took a couple hours to finish. I even tried it out on my cat! He thought it was a new toy, so I had to keep distracting him to get e decent photo! :lol

Next I might try a version with wires and the top ring cast-in, but I'm not too keen on splitting it where the arms connect... we'll see what I come up with.

Re: MiB Orion's Belt (work in progress)

Looks great, Joe! Great scaling overall too, scale wise it seems to fit your cat perfectly. :thumbsup

Does anyone happen to know if a correct marble size has been determined for the small/standard sized galaxy at all?

Re: MiB Orion's Belt (work in progress)

The closeup shot you see in the film with the galaxy swirling inside was an oversized machined hero version that was built just for that shot. if you look at it, there is no way a 1:1 version would be so smooth at that magnification level.

What do you mean over sized hero galaxy?

Re: MiB Orion's Belt (work in progress)

So, I've been thinking a bit about this project and since RP successfully had the galaxy printed with the cage-wires cast-in, I decided to see what I could do with that idea. Thanks in no small way to the fabulous photos Moffeaton posted above, I've been able to come up with this:

This is my latest revision of the piece. (I hope Moffeaton doesn't mind me borrowing his photo to compare.)The top "arms" have been shortened just a tad and the cage arms have been added. As you can see, the shape follows the large-scale hero almost exactly! (Note: the galaxy in the photo is lying slightly askew.)

I made it to take a 17-18mm marble but the thing I am most proud of is where it splits. the two halves of the frame are separated under the top ring. Each cage-wire goes into a small notch in the ring like this:

This will hopefully make the seam between the two halves almost invisible when printing in polished silver. All that should be required to assemble this version is a drop of superglue on a few of the "pegs" and the bond should be VERY durable if you want to wear it, just like the first version. I also made a couple extra notches as can be seen in the render but I'm not sure if I will keep them in the final design. I've ordered a couple test prints and should have them in less than three weeks. During that time I will look at the model and see if I've missed anything. The big drawbacks of these revisions is the added cost of printing due to the increased volume and that the margin for error is higher.

I'm also thinking of experimenting with a few marbles. To make it accurate to the large hero, it would be easiest to get a CLEAR glass marble and stipple on green paint with a stipple brush or sponge, then possibly clear coat it.

Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it all printed up. :thumbsup

Fantastic project, I'll be following this thread with interest.

Re: MiB Orion's Belt (work in progress)

Update time. There is (really) good news and (not too) bad news.

The BAD news first:
Something went wrong while they were polishing the castings. I think they have some sort of automated polishing process and it went awry, so parts of the casting came out uneven. Weird. This means that they will have to be reprinted and that means a slight delay until I have the first V2s in hand. So in the future, I'm only going to order unpolished casts to be safe. Hand polishing is the way to go with these anyway.

The GOOD news:
My V2 design seems to have printed perfectly! You can see in the photo that all details have apparently survived. (Not sure why they look so dull but I'm guessing that they have not been washed clean of polishing agent or something yet.) You can see the tiny notches which are something like 0.3mm in depth and they printed fine, as did the cage wires. So all that will be needed is for the two halves to be separated (the adjoining wire cut off), then a nice polishing and then the insertion of a suitable 18mm marble.
