Julien’s Upcoming Hero Phaser & Communicator Auction

Grabbed a few images from Don’s amazing blog to compare to images of the Jein.

…and here are a few shots of the 2021 auction forgery.

Comparing the TMOST to the Jein and the forgery, you can see far more commonalities between the TMOST and the Jein. The forgery tries too hard to look aged, with ridiculously gloppy and hand-brushed paint, overdone weathering, etc.

The interiors are also far cleaner, and some of the parts (such as the P2 trigger) look different from the Jein and TMOST. There’s also Dykem layout residue on the emitter nozzle mounting stem, which copies the look of the Jein. The TMOST doesn’t have this detail, indicating (among others) that the forgery was specifically trying to copy the Jein, because that was the only surviving hero to reference, at the time. So, instead of having a few unique quirks and differences (as the TMOST has when compared to the Jein), the forgery just…copies the Jein.

And, of course, the metal parts on the Jein and TMOST look to be a match (particularly the nozzles), whereas the forgery’s JPL replica parts are very slightly different.

Even the finer details of the P1 interiors (such as the gauge and color of the wires on the emitter’s grain of wheat bulb) match on the Jein and TMOST, but not the forgery.

…I’m seeing even more subtle details which match on the Jein and TMOST, but not the forgery, such as the wall thickness of the ten-turn’s aluminum tube mount (which is glued to the inside of the P2 shell).
The forgery's P1 has a recessed side rail- that alone should have disqualified it.

I’ve often wondered if the original silver rear knob of the “Black and Gray Phaser II” is still present on the Wah Chang revised “Bonze / Gunmetal and Gray Phaser II”, and all Wah did was either:

- Pushed the knob a bit deeper into the body of the Phaser and mounted the new 10 Turn knob on top of it, or

- Didn’t do anything to alter the original silver knob and just glued the 10-Turn over the top of it.

In this photo, look how unaged and shiny the underside of the top clip is on the fake, whoops! There are so many things wrong with it; I think I made a list of 30 things that I sent to the auction house and they did not even care. Other details like the P1 release mechanism being different was also a giant red flag. The areas of the GJ that were not well documented are different but the well known things are copied including the meter numbers (but with a different font, lol).

That makes a lot of sense. Also note that the Jein and the TMOST don’t seem to have a screw at the bottom of the mounting tube, unlike the forgery.

Do you want to see something cool???? This is a scan of the GJ and a side photo of the TMOST, pretty convincing!!!!

As it happens, I was just noticing all of the shell shape matches in the photos. There are slight differences (the P2 forehead tower on the TMOST is thinner), but those look to boil down to different trimming of the shells.

Either is possible yet it looks like it would be easier just to remove it from its mount and replace it with a new piece as the ten turn itself was part of the original assembly they modified
