how the others see you

Same here. He was extremely humble and awesome to us. I'd have to second you on the charitable events too.
I just enjoy being in costume and the fact that we can help other people while doing that just makes my day regardless of the event.

My wife does not like the predator movie or anything about it. I do not tell her what things cost and we get along better. I opened the box Mike (Uratz) sent me from China and she was in the room .The box contained my BONEHUNTER BIO. Mike had wrote MERRY CHRISTMAS with a black marker on bubble wrap taped on the Bio. I held it up and showed my wife and said Oh! How nice of Mike to send me such a great Christmas present! She looked closer and saw the words Merry Christmas and then said I guess that was nice of him  but how do you know someone in China that well and how did he get the name Mike? She had went into her detective mode so I changed the subject!
I have always loved SCI-FI movies and wish I had started something like this a long time ago. Here is how old I am. I can remember going to many black and white movies for 10 cent admission price.
My 2 sons like the costuming and my grandsons and daughter in law like it also. Most people are amazed at the quality and scary look of my predator costume and can't beleive it when I take the head off and they see this old gray haired **** ! Of course at Halloween they want to get one untill you tell them the cost and work involved to produce such a great costume then they dissapear!

I have always been independent and loved my freedom and have been young at heart. So do what you love as long as you can and as long as it doesn't hurt your loved ones then the rest of the world can just **** off!

thanks all of you for the comments!
Romanians have a lot of prejudices that sometimes I feel that I am alone on the planet! me happy as I found this forum! I'm glad we are here to share the same passions!

-No sir , we all are not crazy!

And like in a group therapy ; I'm sorin and Im an predatorhoolic!

Like most here, the other half doesn't really know the true costs involved and if she ever did I would not last too long at all The family support me, but again do not know the full costs involved (sure anytime anyone visits they get shown my gear  ) but that being said I have never costumed (unless you count going into work !)

I have a few friends into it but most of them not really but still think its cool to see the odd piece. Between props and supplements for the gime i am broke!

I'm (see profile) years old and am also young at heart like a certain Elder  and have been costuming for about ten years.

My buddies are into costuming also so no problems there (did pirates, Xena, Braveheart, etc.... one was brave enough to do a casino/pub crawl in Vegas after one of the RenFaires; we had gone dressed in Braveheart regalia.... only thing they wouldn't do was wear the blue face paint... but guess who did  )

Pub-crawl pal wasn't sure about Predators (quote: "they're UGLY"), but Comic-Con changed their mind  and is now noodging me to get the costume together (quote: "you gotta look like a REAL pred")

My family gets a kick out of seeing my costumes, both Pred and non-Pred. My brother, sister-in-law and nephews love the stuff I've done. So does my son and daughter-in-law.

My better half puts up with the bio collection, action figures, and costume parts.... main rule is, its OK as long as it fits in the workroom and doesn't take over the house
Unfortunately that means no spear and bio on the wall near my bed

But the $ stays under wraps

From now on I will ship with a picture of my complete biography in chinese, with my yellow jumpsuit doing a kung fu stance including a free signed picture of my hero BRUCE LEE.
I should've wrote "Melly Kismas Howhaah! You want pok fy rise wit dat?" Just kidding.

 The Xmas wish was also to fool the Customs agent in case they open it and "oh its just a gift from some dude name "Mike" in China- guess we wont charge any customs fee on this.."

Seeing how I only got a few years till the big 50 my family and friends allways looked at me kinda funny when they found out I was building a full predator costume. But they all thought it was awsome after it was done. My sister God bless her allways felt that I needed a girlfriend more than I needed a Predator costume though. I guess I have to settle for the costume for now. One advantage to being single I dont have anyone to answer to and can put it in any room in the house I want to.

Truthfully my friends think it's cool hobby, my best friend got me into it (natti on the boards) but most of my friends are very artistic and do costumes as well (but not pred). Mainly my family doesn't understand me doing it simply for the cost...when I tell them I ordered dreads they normally give me a blank stare and then ask how much I spent on it...when I tell there is usually a sigh followed by a hand to the forehead.

Interesting... A myriad or responses and I'm kinda surprised at some of the negative ways in which some people are viewed. I'm about to turn 44. I've never really had any negative response. When my studio door is open, my neighbors will wander in with a cold beer for me just to get a look at what I'm working on at any given time. The owners of my company bumped my vacation time up to 4 weeks so I can get some extra days in before Halloween to fill my orders (granted, I've worked for the company for 14 years and already had 3 weeks of vacation, but the extra week sure does help when things get crazy during those few weeks leading up to Halloween). It's easier for them to give me time off than give me a raise in this ecomony, which suits us both. The owner of the rehearsal facility that my company shares the industrial park with has urged me to put up flyers in all their buildings with photos of what I do to advertise myself, since most of their clientele are high profile recording artists with a lot of disposable income.

I'm fortunate to have a girlfriend who rates Predator as one of her favorite movies of that genre. Building her an Alien costume didn't hurt either. In fact, now that she's recently unemployed due to corporate cutbacks, she's now taken on some of what I do to save me some time. She's been doing most of my latex casting on the molds she can handle, trimming, dremmeling and paint prep for the past 3 weeks while I'm at work. She's hung out with me in the studio enough when I'm really busy that she already had a decent understanding of what I do, and considering she's the consumate professional at any job she takes on, a couple quick hands-on tutorials and she's on top of things already. In fact, she's so detail minded that a couple weeks ago, on some stuff that someone sent me to paint, she pointed out that the mold the casting had come from had a crack in it, due to the hairline latex flashing that wasn't part of the seam line... Talk about creating a monster! lol Probably the only complaint I ever get from her is that she seldom sees me from the beginning of September until late October unless she ventures into the studio. But now that she's helping me out, she fully sees what work goes into everything and has a deeper respect for it and it really put a big smile on my face last week when I got home from work and she was so excited to show me how much she'd gotten done on some orders that I have to fill, that she wouldn't let me go into the studio until she could come in with me. Oh... I do get one other complaint from time to time... "When are you going to finish my new Alien tail?"

I guess considering how much of a geek I am about this hobby, I am pretty fortunate, but I have to say that I wouldn't really give 2 ***** about what anyone else thinks of it anyway, so for all of you who seem to have negative critics, as long as you're satisfied, that's all that really matters.

depends on who you ask...my wife thinks i'm ....well insane.....

my kids are my toughest critics they tell me what looks cool and what doesn't...usually they are right on the money...plus they love braggin to their friends that..my dad builds predator suits

the rest of the world...the feedback is usually the same...
that is the baddest costume ever....

this is my hobby and i do it for me not for anyone else to approve or disaprove

but the more i do this,... the more i think like my wife....yes...i am insane

ain't it fun not to be normal?......

Dude, Just marry the girl.
At the wedding everyone on the Lair that attends wears their own costumes instead of "suit and tie."
It would be cool to have an Predator themed Wedding. I could be your wedding planner

well for me all my friends love how creative i am and how nice my suit looks , there isnet nothing like my suit
or even any kind of pred suit so they think its awsome

my family are cool with it also but they don't really care tat much till Halloween of course because
they love following me around and seeing all the people come to me hahah
my mom who always fallows me around always get stabbed with my wrist blades becuase i cant see
they like how i make stuff and my dad helps me being how he used to make mask, molds etc...
my granmas always proud of me and my pred stuff i show her

my gf on the other hand doesent like pred at all, shes always complaining and doesent want to watch pred at all
she thinks im crazy but i love her and she loves me nomatter if i dress like a murdering alien creature looking for
human skulls , shes great

so all together people like the idea and think im awesome

People think I must have too much disposable income, but instead of going out spending £100 boozing on a weekend night I would rather save the money for my two hobbies, cars and my pred costume. I would rather sacrifice a few nights out here and there and get some top quality props from here or spend time working on my armour, dread ring painting etc etc etc and have something that lasts a long time and looks awesome. Everyone who has seen my P1 mask loves it and appreciate why it costs so much when the see it in the flesh, but again the GF just doesnt say much. I let her get on with her passion (shoes, handbags and nights out) and so long as I take her out and go on holiday with her, I think I am allowed to live until she finds out the true costs  (My bro keeps winding me up saying he will do a slideshow at our wedding showing the true costs ha ha ha).

I cant wait until Halloween this year so everyone can see my full suit when it is complete. Like so many people have said in this thread if people have a problem balls to them. Each to their own so long as it doesnt hurt anyone else, costuming is a very creative output and people doing charity work is awesome

It's really interesting in fact to watch people's reactions. When I started out on my bio, I did it in my parents' basement (more room than in my place), and they really were wondering what the hell was going on down there. I kept the clay sculpt under plastic cover, so nothing was to be seen, but when I started covering it in the caulking silicone to get a mold, it reeked to high heaven of vinegar, so they started giving me some heat. They had gotten used to me disappearing down there from time to time to produce some crazy **** like that crossbow of mine, but with the smell... and I hadn't even been using resin yet. Long story short, they were totally dumbfounded by what they finally got to see, even more so after I had explained all the bootstrapping steps to them. They always supported me with the mild kind of ironic, yet proud style only parents can pull off. Even spread the word to some of their closer friends...

Now, the bio with dreads sits on the shoe cabinet in my living room. Girls usually ignore it or shriek, and tell me how ugly and stupid it is. Guys go apeshit ("a predator!! I can't ****** believe it!" - then I turn on the lasers... ). But it's definitely a guy thing. Girls can't even remotely try to forget about the subject and appreciate the effort put into it.

Never really cared what people thought,I figured anyone who had something negative to say was either jealous or really wasnt hugged enough as a kid.Its one of the coolest hobbies and Im glad to be apart of the last 6 years.

I used to get made fun of by some people, but after I skinned them alive and left them hanging it wasn't a problem. I was wanted for murder, but since I'm an alien they let me go.

What a fun thread! It's interesting to see all the various reactions to what we all here find perfectly normal ! I am coming up on 30 here and my husband is coming up on 40. He has a group of friends that are in the 501st with him and we all have prop parties and gaming get togethers, so I think it is WONDERFUL having a group of people to share these things with that are actually into it.
On my hand, however, I've basically alienated everyone I've ever known. I had one friend that actually expressed curiosity enough and I took her to Toronto Trek with me where I paraded around as a Predator for 2 days. That was too much of an overdose for her. Oddly, we stopped talking not long after that. At my engagement party, when discussing hobbies with some of my relatives (my aunt and uncle collect bikes and go on all kinds of bicycle races and marathons and stuff)... when Kevin & I started talking about what we collect, my brother looked over at us with the snottiest look on both his and his wife's faces and informed us that he "collects money". What an ******.

At our wedding, we had little tidbits of Predator everywhere. We got married on a Friday, so unfortunately, most of our 501st buds could not troop for us, and the others were the groomsmen ! LOL! But we played science fiction songs, I walked down the aisle to the imperial march, and we had a Darth Vader cake and a Predator cake topper. So it was great. Everyone thought it was a good time, and to the ones that didn't - to heck with ya anyway!!
