This was my very first prop replica project. After two years of living in Japan I was very excited about being back in the USA and having a chance to celebrate Halloween. To make the most of the occasion I decided to go as a stormtrooper. After a few minutes on ebay looking at suits that would've been too big to fit me for more money than I wanted to spend, I decided I could make my own. Within a couple of days I found the tutorials at
www.studiocreations.com and started sculpting. I spent four months and three times as much money as I would have if I'd bought the suit on ebay, but I'm happy with the result:
Because I'm a bit short for a stormtrooper (5'8") I decided to go with the Don Post Classic Action helmet. For someone of my frame it's nicely proportioned. I had a great time that Halloween and somehow managed to miss every costume contest in town that night:
The funny part was that everywhere I went that night, some idiot had to ask me, "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" It was funny the first four or five times, but it got old.
The best line I got all night was when I was walking across the dance floor at a local club. The crowd was stepping back to get a look at me and there was quite a hole opening up on the floor. As the song came to an end, the DJ called over the microphone, "TK421. Why aren't you at your post?" Hilarious.
The good thing is that I kept the molds. So the following year when a buddy of mine was desperate for a really cool costume, we cranked out another suit:
I'm the one on the right (the shorter one) and that kid in the middle is my sister. She made her costume too.
By the time Episode III came out, I was tired of doing the trooper thing so I loaned my armor to the other guy's wife so she could go with us. I built my super-fast Boba Fett costume in four days and my cousin joined us in his armor (FX, I think) and one of my spare CA buckets. The TIE costume is mine also, but it was mostly just bought as is:
Here's a shot of just the troopers that shows how bad the off-the-shelf suits look when you're a little short:
And here's a closeup shot of my Fett with some photoshop background goodness:
The gloves are all wrong and the blaster is crap, but it's not too bad for a four-day project. If I had five days I'd have finished the jetpack also...
