Firefly "The Message" Voice Recorder

Cool find. Well done, F-N-S and Pilot's wife. :)

BTW, you folks wanting to MP3 the message know you'll have to contend with the background music, right?

Actaully, I'm giving consideration to simply re-recording it. A couple of friends and I could do a reading and whoever sounds best will go in my prop replica. Of course, this assumes I find a resonably dirt cheap MP3 player with "guts" that will fit in the radio. I'm concerned with getting the MP3 controls to function with the case swap :confused Not to mention jamming a tiny speaker in there. That's why I'm in for 5... I expect to loose a few test subjects in the process. I'll do one static that's just a repaint, and have 4 to chop up until I get it right.

What's this "blooper reel" of which you speak SurferGeek?

Hey guys, please be careful with the "I want one", and "I'll take 5" posts. Those kinds of posts are meant for the JY only. I know this evolved from a research thread, and it gets a little tricky at times to know when a thread turns from a show-off or research thread into an Interest or For Sale thread. Still, the staff would appreciate it if everyone kept the appropriate posts in the correct forum. I've pruned out some of the more blatant posts.

Pilot, thanks for taking on this project. It sounds like you have a lot of interest, and hopefull you'll be making a lot of members quite happy. :) Still, be careful about taking orders via PM from new members. I'm not saying that new members have the plague, and should be shunned. ;) But we have long-established rules in place about access to the JY in order to help our members protect themselves.

If you have any question, please feel free to shoot me a PM.

Thanks,
Lonnie

Hay guys, what's this?

Corporate order + in-state vendor = free next day shipping. :lol

Before everyone gets *too* excited and starts sending me money, keep in mind that I still need to pick up packing supplies. I can't weigh them out and quote accurate shipping until I have them in the proper packaging.

Also keep in mind that I just checked onboard a brand new ship today (whoo, Navy. *sigh*) and my schedule for the next few days is a bit uncertain at best. I *should* be off early enough tomorrow to grab what I need and start assembling packages for people, but please be patient with me in case I can't get to them until the weekend.

I've got them in my grubby little paws though, so half the battle is won already. :D

It came. It came. Thank you so much. :D

Umm.. so does the belt clip come off the back then? And what kind of paint does it need? Am I right in guessing the wheel and buttons stay unpainted, as is? Does it stay the full length, or does it get cut down lengthwise any?

got my "factory sample" in today as well :lol

i have the same questions as kaylee on this one.

good lord you can go deaf with this thing. that volume is TOUCHY......

:D

now someone with some talent tell us how to paint this sumbitch.

I am guessing that some nice copper paint would do the trick. The knobs and dials stay chrome. I am not sure about the length, looks like they MIGHT have cut it down from the screen grab that was posted.

To answer my own questions..
there's a couple glimpses of it around 12:51, 17:36 The base of the pocket clip is still there, but the clip itself is removed.

The base itself IS cut off -- we see the full height in Kaylee's hand at 17:58
There's a great shot of it as well at 42:38.

:)

OK, I've got a ton of newbie questions. :confused

I got mine yesterday. I had ordered a silver one, but instead got one of hte clear blue ones. Is that going to make a difference? Do I put a primer on it before I paint it? As far as chopping it down and removing the belt clip, what would be the best thing to do that with?

I'm sure these are dumb questions, but I've never done this before. Firefly's really made a geek out of me. :$

Um... Guilty as charged? You got company at least. :)

The belt clip just slides on out. Checking the pic of the back when Zoe takes it out of his hand, there's no other work done there. It's just slid out and painted.

I *think* the radio is cut off right at the edge of the battery compartment, though if anyone with the ability to blow up a screen cap and check more precisely would care to verify that, I'd be most grateful. :)

Every one of us was a noob at some point, and we all asked these same questions. Some of found help, some just learned the hard way, and the majority of us did some of both.

My policy is to always prime everything. It really does make "that much" of a difference in making sure the paint sticks and you get a good finish. I also wash everything in warm, soapy water as well. Wash, air dry (hair dryers count when you are in a hurry), prime, paint, clear coat (matte, satin, or gloss as appropriate).

Obviously with electronics you'll need to take the case apart and pull eveything out before washing it. If this just isn't practical you can wipe the surface with isopropal alcohol on a clean cloth, but soap and water is preferrable. You just want to make sure the surface is as clean as possible before spraying the first primer layer. Since the dial and buttons are to remain silver, I'd go ahead and take it apart. Reinstall the gear after the case is painted.

I don't have my radios yet, but if it needs to be cut it's a safe bet I'll use my dremel tool with a cut off wheel to do it. There are a thousand different small hand saws at your local hardware store that will be up to the task. You don't have to go out and buy a Dremel. However, if you are starting down this road with more replica prop projects in your future, it's an excellent investment. I don't know what I'd do with out mine, and don't care to think about it.

Yep, they definitly cut it short. I wonder how that will affect plans of jamming a small MP3 player in there? I'm probably getting ahead of myself. No point in worrying about that until my radios arrive and I find an acceptably dirt cheap MP3 device to butcher.

I measured the space available in the radio (without the battery compartment). It's about 65mm x 23mm x 11mm. It should be enough to build in a very small mp3 player but i guess the speaker could be a problem :D

I'm most concerned about the speaker, controls, and power.

The controls might be rigged to some of the existing switches on the radio. With only one track to play, all we need is power on, power off, play, and stop. Depending on how the MP3 player is set up, that can achieved with only two switches: one for on/off and one for play/stop. If the existing controls can't be used (I don't know why they couldn't... I'm just spit balling here) then another interface might be rigged up on the back panel or through a seperate control unit connected by a wire running to the unit.

"Throw away" batteries are going to require an access panel for changing them out, while rechargables will require a power connection for the recharger. Both take up space. Obviously the radio already has a battery compartment, but it seems that is the area that get's chopped. This is really going to depend on the power requirements of the MP3 player and speaker used. If it will run of a couple of small watch batteries it might not be an issue at all.

The speaker is an obvious issue. The screen used prop had no need for one (as the old saying goes, "We'll fix it in post" {post referring to "post production", I probably didn't need to explain that on this forum}) while our functioning replica will. I see two obvious answers: 1) a very tiny speaker inside the unit 2) an external speaker attached with a thin cable. I have not yet spent any time searching for a speaker (since I didn't have the unit's internal dimension) so option 1 might not even be possible. Option 2 is not desireable because it further reduces screen accuracy, but it sure makes construction a LOT easier. If you are costuming, you might even run this to a speaker and power supply housed in a PAL casing attacked to a belt or vest.

We really don't need a data input port. The recording can be uploaded before the MP3 is dismantled. Saving it might be fun as you can upload recordings of other scenes from the show or your own messages later on, but it isn't necessary to make the prop replica functional. It's especially fun if we go back to the costuming idea with a speaker in a PAL case. As you walk around Captain Mal periodically shouts orders at you over the communications device :lol However, those could also be uploaded before dismanteling the device if one thinks ahead. No, no need to save any microphone of data input port from the MP3.
