DRIVE (2011) Scorpion Satin Jacket

Yeah, I think that was a bad decision on their part. Regardless of the small difference, a lot of people care about that (including me), and it makes it look a lot more believable. Hopefully this can be changed before serious production begins. Only time will tell.

So I guess that answers the question asked a while back. The photos on Steady's page were the screen-used jacket, and not theirs. The stitching is over the scorpion, not under it.

Yes, the photos on Steady's page were the screen-used jacket but look they signed each picture like it's their product while all that time it was the screen-used jacket.
I dont think their jacket will look half as good at screen-used jacket.
It weird because when I asked them about the stitching that should be on top of scorpion, they replayed that their replica will be exactly the same as the jacket from the movie but I didn't believe it judging from the certain photos they posted on their blog - pics of scorpion being embroidered over the diamond pattern stitching..
Now they saying that their jacket will be exactly the same except for the stitching going over scorpion. Thats very shady on their part.

^

That's the same thing that they told me. And maybe I'm just not a very trusting person but those pictures said something completely different. And I'm DEFINITELY the type of guy that will feel really unsatisfied w/ a purchase if it isn't PERFECT. As described, I don't really want it anymore.

Magnoli it is once he gets his hands on a sample and provided the stitching will be over the scorpion.

*And unless they're doing something to make the scorpion look a little more worn, it looks way too raised and way too clean in those images.

Hey guys, long time looker, first time poster haha

Im trying to make this jacket for myself mainly because Im a flat broke college art kid and I really want it for my own. But I plan on, ideally, embroidering a blue bull on the back because Im a Taurus, and the scorpion is 100% the Driver's in my opinion. Itd be like wearing the bat symbol to me.

Thing is, I have never sewn before, or have any knowledge of it haha. Im a pretty quick learner, and Ive taught myself a lot of things in life so Im looking at this as my next big project.

If anyone could maybe post, or reply or email me or something, a detailed explanation of what would go into making this jacket. Ive tried to figure it out, but like with all intricate things in life, there is just so much I dont know and could never foresee being this new.

So, Im asking for things like, what kind of material to buy, how much, how to even know what material the jacket is. Im really stumped on how the jackets even put together, as I want mine reversible also, is it just two layers of satin, one brown and one white ? Or is the structure essentially, white satin-some kind of lining or filler-brown satin ?

Or the sleeves where they meet the shoulder and it expands. What is the technical term for that kind of sleeve, envelope, accordion ? How is it even physically possible to have that kind of sleeve to work on both the outside AND the inside when reversed ? That part baffles me.

And lastly, what would be the steps I would take to do this ? Ive been looking for a pattern, but again, being new, I have no idea what to look for. Does anyone have a pattern for this jacket, or know what they based it off of and what they changed ?

Again, Im very, very, new to this, and custom clothing has always interested me since Ive always been into fashion, but Ive always also been broke. So Im looking at this jacket as my starting line in learning how to make my own clothes.

Any help at all is appreciated, but thanks either way !

I thought for sure I'd see a bunch of "Drivers" out on Halloween, but luckily I was the only one (in my area at least). I sewed the whole jacket and did the embroidery/quilt stitching myself. It took forever. I unfortunately didn't finish the quilting on the sleeves because my sewing machine sucks and couldn't get the material through it. There's definitely some pretty good versions up on this board btw. I have some more detailed pictures here.

Maybe some other people can contact Steady and express their regret for their purchase if it won't be screen-accurate as promised. Maybe if they get enough negative feedback they'll redo the design of the jacket and everyone can be happy.

I started by emailing them through their contact page:
Rock Steady — Contact

..but got my replies from ashley@steadyclothing.com. Maybe just don't mention my name so she doesn't think I'm the only one dissatisfied with this. haha

Hey,
Been reading this thread for awhile and I now regret buying this jacket, and feel disappointed. I kinda feel swindled into buying it, and I agree with AdamL that more folks should e-mail Steady Clothing with their concerns.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but the jacket being sold at Magnoli is listed as $350.00! Does that mean Steady Clothing is providing some sort of knock-off jacket?

I seriously doubt they would redo the jacket at this point in the game.

The only thing Steady has done wrong is that they used a picture of a screen used jacket without acknowledging it.

It was misleading, but I think we all need to remember licensed replicas rarely look as good as the real thing.

This is the first time Steady has ever made a replica of something, and clearly they under estimated how much scrutiny the jacket would come under. But the truth is the final product will look good for most people, and they will buy it. The average Drive fan wont care enough to notice if the embroidery is wrong, the materials are not right, etc...

Besides, its not like they are making you buy the jacket.

Very true Ray.

And for the record, Indy said that the jacket without the scorpion would be $325 instead of $350. But i think i might try to bargain with him and ask for 50 off because im sure putting the scorpion on would be a lot tougher than one would think, and since it's an iconic part of the jacket, it'd be worth more than $25. or am i wrong? I don't want to bargain like that if i don't know enough

I bought that helmet when I saw a kid, thought it was so awesome. As I grew older I soon realized all the problems it had... not that I'm implying anything about the jacket. Just funny you should post that.

Anyways, hopefully this doesn't annoy you guys further, but for those who didn't get an email from steady (I got it from GetGoRetro) the sizing chart has been changed again.

Say if you want the Drive jacket. Magnoli will look at picture references and they will reproduce it for you as a high quality jacket. Something that can be worn everyday and not a costume or plaything. The high price is a guarantee that what you're getting is the real deal. They will also tailor it so you'll get an exact fit.

Steady Clothing's replica of the Drive jacket is a fairly mass marketed item so it would make sense that not every small detail will be accurate to the screen used jacket.

I'm a bit disappointed myself since I ordered one but I'm sure it will look fine regardless of the diamond pattern not being over the scorpion design.

So are you saying that Steady version will be costume like and it wont look like a jacket that can be worn everyday?
I mean I dont want to wear something that look cheaply done, it's just not my style that why I'm concerned about the stitching. I think it will make this jacket look cheap. Just look at this pic in this link below - it doesn't look vintage at all

http://steadyclothing.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/img00494-20111005-1520.jpg

I'm afraid it will look like someone got a jacket and decided to embroid scorpion by himself. I think it may look like scorpion doesn't belong on the jacket unless it was under the stitching.
I'm seriously afraid this jacket will look amateurishly made and ridiculous.

Oh yeah and they changed the size chat for the 3rd time. I ordered L which will fit me slim but I seriously doubt that S or M will fit someone who is 5'10 - 6.

Ah, thanks! I was intending to wear the Steady Jacket as an "everyday" thing, and not just a costume. In retrospect I guess I should have gone with Magnoli! Oh well.

The new size chart seems finally good right now. The Small one corresponds to my other Small jacket's measurements.

I am now longer worried about it being too tight or too big.

Oh and please, people don't bother saying Small isn't right for a 5'11-6 person. I know it is sometimes.

I emailed FilmDistrict about the jacket, since they are working closely with Steady on this jacket. I expressed my feelings about the back, maybe it's still possible to change the stitching. I told them I didn't want to sound like a dick, but that it would be a nice addition to the jacket, haha.

I'm not saying that the Steady jacket will be a "costume". Making a replica of movie wardrobe, you wouldn't really wear it daily, correct? The fabric from costumes that are bought from stores can't handle everyday wear. They'll easily be ruined. I'm just stating that Magnoli's can reproduce movie clothes and turn it into something that could be worn everyday if you wish since it's high quality.

I should state that I never bought anything from Magnoli himself. This is all speculation on my part.

I'm sure Steady's Drive jacket will be something you can put on whenever you want.

Good idea. I'm interested to read how they'll reply on the situation.

Hey guys. Ive been following this post for months. I had been looking at some pics of the scorpion made by steady and im a little worried about if the scorpion emb will come out looking very light and cheap. I had idea of using coffee to dye the emb to give it that vintage effect people want. you would have to be careful in trying to make sure the emb is soaked in the coffee without the white quilted edges so use a powerful stain remover to wipe off any mistakes. google dying fabric with coffee. Any thoughts on this idea would be great :)

Got a reply from Steady once again. Basically, the stitching will stay under the scorpion. What a pain, guess I'll have to get someone to do it for me. Maybe if FilmDistrict gets my email in time, there will still be a way to have it done properly. Unfortunately I don't think it will.
