Dark Shadows trailer out...

I know its pretty much a 180 from the original TV show, but this version still looks interesting to me. There were some laughs in the trailer and I love Depp/Burton, so I'll see it. Kind of reminds me of how when the first trailer for POTC came out. Most people thought it was going to stink.

When is the last time Burton made a worthwhile movie? Alice in Wonderland was heinous. I couldn't get through more than fifteen minutes of that killer-barber musical...thing.
Seriously...right??! And how 'bout that bizarre movie where Depp has those weird knives on his hands! :rolleyes
As for this "Dark Shadows" movie, it looks absolutely dreadful. An absurd and unfunny send-up.
I remember being scared to death by Barnabus Collins when I was a kid. You couldn't get me to watch this Burton bastardization unless you strapped me in a chair and held my eyelids open like Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

Hey, I LIKE Edward Scissorhands, smartaleck! :lol And I think Batman Returns is one of the best comic movies ever made. But he's become such a self-parody.

I was five years old when the original Dark Shadows first aired in 1966. The only thing I knew about it was that it was a soap opera, so I never watched it; it was only after it had been cancelled that I learned of it's gothic and horror elements. In the years since, I've seen a few scenes from the series and I've seen House of Dark Shadows a couple of times. So I have a basic understanding of the premise and the characters, but couldn't call myself a fan.
That said, I'm hoping this first trailer isn't truly representative of the movie, and that (for whatever reason) they've chosen to showcase some of the humorous scenes in an otherwise more serious movie that'll be closer in mood to Sleepy Hollow than Beetlejuice.

i am a big fan of the original show found it on netflix and have been watching it ever since. the way i think of this is its a parody of the first horror soap opera, its meant to entertain and revamp (pun intended) and old show most of my generation has never heard of, in summary i will go see it and i may even like it.
Question: has anyone noticed all of the remakes of old tv shows and movies?

I read this post and decided not to click on the link.
Not to sound snobbish, but I don't even know what this movie is, and I'll pass on it based on this info alone.
Yeah, I didn't care for AiW either. The one before that, Sweeney Todd, I thought was pretty good, though. The Depp/Burton track record is a pretty good one, I think. I'm willing to take a chance on this film based on that alone.

Which is actually the business model Hollywood used prior to the "branded properties" approach where who you cast was what sold the tickets, rather than what the property was called.
I mean, they could've stuck Johnny Depp in the film and called it Vampire Shenanigans if that was the business model now, but instead, they're lifting the IP (partially) from existing material.

Good god does that look like a POS!
It was very BIG in it's day. "Normal" people watched it. Kids ran home from school to watch it. It was popular with housewifes and College kids.
As a matter of fact Jonathan Frid and David Selbey were major sex symbols during it's run.
Before Dark Shadows vampires were foul creatures to be destroyed. Mr. Frid created the first sympathetic vampire/antihero that has influenced Ann Rice , Buffy, Angel,and all the others that have come since then.

The trailer definitely wasn't what I was expecting, but I'll see it anyways and I'm sure it'll be entertaining in the least.
Take out the disco music and I think it'd change the whole feel.
Unfortunately I've read too much about people saying it's a '70s is a big joke'-comedy... I don't know why. They mention he's in the 70s, show a lava lamp and a VW van...and that's it. The rest could be in any time period.
I feel like I should edit the trailer with some better music and then see what kind of reactions it gets...hasn't anyone done that yet?

What I don't get is that Dark Shadows was a soap opera, full blown soap opera, just like all the others. It's just the characters were (after the first season) Ghosts, Vampires, Werewolves and other man made monsters.
Isn't a soap opera horror show a perfect vehicle to put up in hopes of capturing some of that Twilight money. Seems natural.
But they do a comedy.

I think Johnny Depp is great. I think Tim Burton can be great. Edward Scissorhands is still (imo) the best film Burton has ever done. Great comic timing, original, and has lots of heart.

But this is not Dark Shadows. They should have just made it, it's own thing. Used their talent to skewer the drivel that is Twilight and poke fun at the absurdity of turning vampires into whiney, glittery stalkers. And it would have probably done really well, and be really funny, unlike those scary movie style spoofs could ever be.
But no. They had to use a story that many die hard fans adored (some who grew up watching) and ruin it.
So sad.
