Unlimited Run Biff's Matchbooks from Back to the Future II - SHIPPING NOW!

Re: Biff's Matchbooks from Back to the Future Part II

I finally received the matches for the Biff Matchbooks today after a very long delay in shipping from the seller.
I put together a few very rough prototypes to make sure everything lines up correctly and looks right.

I'm getting a printing company to do the matchbook covers. The paper and print quality will be much better than these.
They will also have the 'Close Cover Before Striking' text on the inside, but I didn't include it on these test pieces.

I don't like to do it anymore because of the PayPal nightmare I had to deal with a few years ago, but I might need to take some pre-orders on these to help cover some of the printing cost. This will be optional, but I will offer a reduced price on any paid orders up until the time that they are ready to ship.

I’m also cool with paying early ;)

Re: Biff's Matchbooks from Back to the Future Part II

I can make the payment as a pre-order, too.
My only fear is that the "Close cover before striking" letters are not accurate enough.
Last time someone tried to make a run of this, got the wrong font, size, and spacing. Please put some test photos of that detail before making the final run, so we can give you some advices if necessary.
I hope everything goes right with this run!!!

As everything helps, here you have some original matchbooks for reference, so you can see the inside, too

I had to redo some of the final tweaks to the design/layout when Illustrator crashed before I could save my last revision.

I'll have the preorder page ready to go on Etsy sometime later today.

Here's the 'Close Cover Before Striking' text. It's the same font used on the original, and was
made using a photo overlay of the original prop to make sure the spacing and size are correct.

Honestly, and with all due respect, I think the spacing is wrong. If you see the photo of the original I uploaded, you can see there is more spacing between the letters than in your design. It's very clear, for example, in the ER letters in "cover" or in IKI in "striking". On the original, you have some space between those letters, while in your design they're almost touching with no space between them. I would say the spacing between the letters is (I hope you understand me) about the size of the width of the letters' lines in theat font. I mean, you should space the letters abouth the width of a capital "i" (a vertical line) of the same font used. (i don't know if I explained it properly)

Part of this is because it was a from a screenshot of a PDF, which tends to slightly distort some of the scaled vector text on screen for some reason.
I did go back and modify it a little further though, because there were a few issues with the spacing. Here is a zoomed-in screencap to limit the distortion effect:

Re: Biff's Matchbooks from Back to the Future Part II

what will you do about the matches for oversea orders?

They will be treated with a flame retardant chemical. I'll be testing this to make sure it's done right before I begin shipping. I will also be including special instructions for customs in all of the international orders so that they know that the matches are only a prop and will not ignite.

Hello I’m ready to pay/pre order, do I just add 4 sets to my cart and pay and then send you a message with what I want etc? Thanks
Yes. Be sure to include your RPF name in the note so I can keep track of the list here. Thanks!

Thanks everyone! The interest list has been updated and sorted.

For those who missed the earlier post, I'm now taking orders through Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/listing/642679409

I'll be placing the order with the printing company for the matchbook covers on SAT SEPT 14. I expect those to arrive approx. Sept 19-20. I should also receive the flame-retardant chemical for the matches while I am waiting for the covers to come in from the printer, and will begin testing it.

I just finished refining the front artwork for the matchbook covers and made some final corrections to sizing/scale of the various design elements. I'll add another test photo with the final design soon. The flame-retardant chemical has been ordered. I have also removed the limits on the interest list, since I should have enough matches and covers available for now.

The matchbook covers have been ordered and I should have them in less than a week. I also just received an update that the flame-retardant chemical will be delivered here on Monday. If everything arrives on schedule as expected, there is a very good possibility that I'll be able to start shipping in less than a week.

Below are some photos of more very rough test pieces with the finalized updated artwork. No inside text on the test matchbooks because I didn't have enough time or material to do any alignment tests with my printer. The scaling and position of everything has been rechecked and revised very carefully based on the auction photos of the real props. This is just some flimsy cardstock I had available for a quick test, and is nothing like the actual print quality or material quality that the finished product will have.

Re: Biff's Matchbooks from Back to the Future Part II

I've done several tests with the flame retardant chemical, and it works perfectly. It takes almost 5 seconds of direct contact with an open flame before the matches will ignite at all, which is considerably longer than usual, even for regular paper. I will be using several heavier coats of the FR for the actual matches. US shipments will not require it, but I can add it to them if you prefer.

Also, the matchbook covers were shipped from the printer on Monday, and I expect them to arrive no later than Wednesday the 19th.

Just a quick update. Matchbook covers arrived from the printer today. I don't have any time for photos right now (maybe later tonight?).

I put together the final test pieces, and I can say without any hesitation that this will be THE definitive replica of the matchbooks. The scaling, placement, and alignment of everything is perfect, and the print & material quality and finish are outstanding. I'm extremely happy with the results.

I'll begin shipping these out on Saturday.

Sounds good! I can’t wait :)
