Yeah, my understanding of the term was that it was actually pretty seriously derogatory, almost verging on racial slur.

Well in all fairness, it depends on the context in which it is used.

It's either derogatory or as a reference such as "Eh, who's dat cute Haole guy?" for which usually leads to some local guy getting jealous and saying "I'm going geeve dat ***kin haole dirty lickins"...

I don't know how many times I get "Eh Haole boy!" whenever I am back in the Island. I usually turn around and follow up with "Da kine li'dat" pidgen English. To which the response is 180 degree change to "Oh...island boy, yeah?" Works every time!

Or often I'll get cursed at in Samoan/Filipino to which I turn around and respond with some of my own choice Samoan/Filipino curse words. After that we are generally cool!

Growing up on Oahu, North Shore, Kalihi Valley, Liliha area I knew a fair share of Hawaiins, Tahitians, and Samoans, and locals that treated me like family. Unfortunately the next generation is not so kind to anyone with white skin. Thus the reason I always say Hawaii has truly LOST the Aloha Spirit.

So bring it back home....perhaps the new Hawaii 5-0 can once again shed a positive light onto the Islands and the native people.

There is a great independent film made about the life of a haole living in Hawaii called "Beyond Paradise". Great flick and very realistic.

why did they neuter the opening theme song? It sounds like the booming drums and blaring trumpets have pillows duct taped to them.. Also listening to the original, there is a secondary drum that added the 'funk' that has been completely removed from the new theme...

i can't seem to find the new theme that aired.. the google results are giving me fan made new themes with a lot more 'umph' then the one that acutally aired... i'll do some editing and get a comparison clip up tonight... or is it just my speakers?
