Alleged Screen Used Hero TOS Phaser up for auction (now the aftermath)

Unfortunately, all of this detailed analysis has also made these props much, much easier to fake. And, as we’ve seen, all you need is a good forgery, a questionable backstory serving as “provenance” (which the normies don’t know enough to question), and enough cash to push through a fake that earned more at auction than the actual, original artifact it copied.

What MOST forget is that when someone tries to copy a known screen used prop and pass it off they copy all of the obvious details and it's usually done a little too good. The perfect example of this is the Nichols phaser.

The two biggest issues I saw with it right from the start were related to the paint which I only spotted the first two issues because I am very well versed in restoring old cars and have studied how the weathering of paint works and should look under natural conditions:

1. No paint job ever wears off that uniformly (it was nearly identical on both sides).

2. The wear pattern didn't make any sense because it was wearing off in areas in which it was rarely, if ever coming into contact with something.

The ONE thing that sealed it as a fake/forgery for me was that it was painted with a gloss clear coat, which only would have been done to hide tells of it being weathered intentionally.

Then there was the issue of the metal parts not matching up. Even I noticed the metal barrel was one of JPL's early creations

THE Jein Sonic Disruptor (replica)
This is a reasonably accurate facsimile of the screen used prop I built up from a 3D print.... I did NOT try to capture every little detail, just the "overall feel" of the prop...

Waaaayyyyy back when this thread first started, I immediately linked the auction phaser to the weathering style used on replicas made and sold by a certain someone.

I know and what's odd it's JPL's basic style but he definitely had help perfecting it... And the only other known builder I can think of to help he doesn't get along with....

What I say here is TRUE even with the Sonic disruptor I did. I deliberately let the detailing look kinda ehhh, because actual damage is kind of "ehhh looking" and I wanted it to be different enough that it's not a fake or forgery, yet it possibly could be like what the other one looks like...

Yet that's the beauty of art...

This is the main point. Compared to other survivors like the ZoltarX and Jein’s hero the places where the chipping and wearing of paint are on JPLs phasers don’t line up with how they would chip if dropped accidentally. They look more like someone took them outside to play with at a gravel pit. How would they go from being in good shape on screen and then to Nichelle and have the condition deteriorate like that. If they were a prized momento from her time on the show they would be in a display cabinet.

It's clear they don't understand basic wear and tear...... IF we get even more technical it was more like an artistic interpretation of a weathered paint job...

I almost always don't do enough weathering as it's 99.999999999% done by paint & I try not too over do it because I know exactly what it's supposed to look like but I absolutely hate it when i go overboard on weathering

...idle rich.

Anyone who knows anything knows that the tower has been broken for many years, and that a sloppy fix has now been performed.
Yes, I pointed out the obvious sloppy repair

YET the problem Heritage had was the auction catalog clearly shows the crack present which does confuse those are considering spending a hefty little chunk of money.

I think what really caused the issue was TWO fold:

1. The damage to the P2 body was a clear identifier of the prop, which no reasonable auction house would restore.

2. The repair was so sloppy that it had to be done to hide OTHER damage that was inflicted & couldn't be repaired properly........

Basically, a cluster frak.

Exactly.

Basically, a cluster frak.

To paraphrase Captain John Christopher, they seem to have a lot of them.

I think it's safe for me to say that a proper restoration of the internals is going to be done shortly & that the new owner won't be trying to have the sloppy repair work undone.

I refered the owner to a dear friend who has examined the Jein phaser under Greg's watchful eyes when he was alive.

Basically, a cluster frak.
Pretty much, I'd almost call it a half hearted scam

I got my R.Shanko mid and that's the closest I'll ever get to having a screen used phaser.

(Yeah, I know the games Ron used to play yet he has amazing skills as a builder)
Ron "asked" me to edit this to remove my "lies" about him. Which I will NOT be doing cause I didn't say anything everyone doesn't already know.

Threats get absolutely NO WHERE with me.
