Building the Slave I

Tim,

That ship is looking fantastic! I can't wait to see more progress on it. Perfect!

Nathan

Has anyone else been planing on building the SlaveI,or identifying kit parts? There are a few on there that I cant make heads or tails of.I dont know if i already have the parts in the kits I bought,or if they are parts from others I have'nt identified. The only good page is in the Chronicals on pg 195-196 I believe. There are 1/24 Harrier jet parts all over the bottom..more than just the 1 rosetta stone piece.A few others I'm uncertain of.Those transmission halves.....are they from the 1/12 Tamiya JPS MKIII kit,or from a different formula I car?Also...looks like some drive shaft pieces from a truck kit that connects to the transmission pieces(dont think they are from Leopold railway gun). The other I'm really stumped on is the large looking kit part that fits over the machined aluminum shaft where the wings are fastened to...it looks rather large..possibly a rear end from a truck/car kit?The 1/8 Entex Porsche?I'm at a loss with this one..if anyone can help...please put yur $1.00's worth of insight in,I'd much appreciate any help-John

I’ll put my $1.00 worth in, John! The transmission halves are from a Ferrari 312B, if I remember correctly. You can see two of the top engine halves hiding in there too. I understand the same engine is in the 312T as well. I really need to get out the Chronicles and scan over this thing again tonight. Other than the Harrier’s main engine, I also spotted those two “walls” inside the engine compartment (parts #69 & #152). Do you see more? Still haven’t I.D.’d that part the wing axis goes through. It looks very familiar though. . .

HereÂ’s my list of kits so far. Just ask if you have any questions.

Tamiya - 20mm Flakvierling 38 MITSd.Ah.52 anti-aircraft gun - 1/35 scale
Tamiya - Schwerer Panzerspahwagen Sdkfz 232 (8 Rad) 8-wheeled armored vehicle - 1/35 scale
Tamiya - German 88mm Gun Flak 36/37 - 1/35 scale
Hasegawa - Leopold German railway gun - 1/72 scale
Hasegawa - Morser Karl rail gun - 1/72 scale
Airfix (or MPC) - Hawker Harrier - 1/24 scale
Entex - Porshe Carrera RSR Turbo 935 - 1/8 scale
Tamiya - Yardley McLaren M23 - 1/12 scale
Tamiya - Ferrari 312B - 1/12 scale

Dan

Thanks for the compliments.

Dan, the things the wing axis goes through are the boosters from a Space Shuttle. BUT those parts ARE NOT on the final model! They must have changed that.

What part from the McLaren M23 is used?

Tim

Tim:

Thanks for the heads up on those shuttle boosters. I just knew they looked familiar! The round parts that cap off the ends of the wings are what I believe to be the transmission covers from the McLaren. Visually, they seem to be identical, but I haven't yet measured them for size. It could be they're from the Entex John Player Special or maybe I just want to believe they're from the Tamiya, since I already have the kit.

Thanks Dan&Tim...that takes a little off my mind.I've been looking over the SlaveI Chronical pages this weekend.I think I have most those kits you mentioned..with the exception of the 1/8 Entex Porsche&the 1/12 Mclaren. So many kits to look for.I was certain at 1 point the transmission halves were from the 1/12 Tamiya JPS MKIII.I see more of the smaller parts on the underside of the SlaveI from that 1/24 Harrier kit...the air intakes...and I think possibly some of the smaller wing assemblies to the rear staggering one another that line the bottom. When you say booster rockets,do you mean from an airfix Saturn V,or from a large scale Revel space shuttle?I know the wings were assembled from the harrier kit(2nd thing I spotted when i got my harrier kit)looks like they used more than 1 kit to make them, lets hear it for silicone&urethane resin!making those wings will be tough...least for me.Anyways, back to the drawing board..I'll be taking a long gander at the Chronicals again....thanks again&if I find something,I'll put it up for critiquing-John

AWESOME! Tim. The Slave is really shaping up and Fett looks great also. A real pain working a figure in that scale, isn't it?

I know it was like that for me doing the TIE Pilot and that one was even smaller at 1/35 scale.

Rolando

I am in amazement at your work, Tim. As Rolando said, the Fett is brilliant. As for the Maya program, any advise for someone who knows absolutely nothing about computer model-rendering? Is this the program of choice regarding 3D planning? As much as I like to think of myself as being up to speed, I truly live in the dark ages as far as this sort of thing is concerned.

Nathan

WOW!Excellent work Tim!You are a true artist&craftsman of the trade...I can only hope&dream that what I make comes out half as good.Out of curiosity, are you sculpting over the 1/24 airfix Harrier pilot with A&B Epoxy putty,or are you using something else? The detail is right on....I think it looks better than the figure in the real studio model as seen in the Chronicals...keep the pictures comming Tim-John

Yes, I am using Tamiya two component epoxy to sculpt over the Harrier pilot.
Seems like the helmet will be a lot trickier than I thought it would be. The recessed "cheeks" are a pain at that scale.

The Boba is more detailed than the original one in the ILM model. While the original model was only on screen in fairly wide shots, the figure was sufficient. Since mine will be on display I chose to make the cockpit and figure more detailed.

I used Maya to model the Slave1 because that is the program I have been using at work for 4 years now. I am sure it would be possible to model the Slave 1 just as well in 3dMax or Softimage.

Here's a little sneak-preview exclusively for board members. :)
slave1_fenders.jpg

These are the fenders and front bumper of the 1:8 scale Entex Porsche being held in place by tape.
Does anybody know if the fenders stick out of the bottom of the Slave 1? It is hard to tell from the photos I have.

Tim

Wow Tim..its look'in good!I have yet to make blue prints for the Falcon....I'm lagg'in bad.Anyway...as far as I can tell from the Photos of the Slave I in the Chronicals book...it does'nt look as though the engine shrouds(Porsche fenders) are protruding any...and are recessed.Look in your Chronicals book(I'm sure you have many times) on page 195 top photo"side view".The only parts that protrude on the bottom at all are the two rocket engines. Its difficult to see from the photos of the unfinished model..but from the unfinished state of the model on the following page.."most the guts" look to be tucked away in there....I'm guessing....but it looks to be a good inch or so.I hope I have shed some light & helped you...keep up the good work&the inspiring photos-John

Tim I have to say you have outdid yourself on that one. It looks really great. It's one thing to built a falcon as nice as yours but to get the Slave 1 down as well as you have can't go without complement. You've set another milestone. By the way I sold the shuttle...don't kill me. ZSend me an email or an IM it went to a very interesting person.

1/72 Hasegawa Leopold&Karl Railway Gun kits(gun barrels&such) (2 each)20MM Flak(88MM Flak?),1/8 Entex 935 Porsche body fender parts,1/24 Airfix Harrier Jet,ya might need 2 unless you wanna cast parts, either 1/12 McLaren,or Ferrari 312B Transmission(I used to think it was1/12 JPS)Mclaren Trannie part,I think there are some 8-Rad parts on there too(plates on the body) and alot of scratch building&modifying of parts. The rest I dont know.....but this beast is the next on my to do list. These are all the kits off the top of my head....I have a list I made out....dont know where it is.
