I don’t know. Look at the Bandai piece here. There are a few other pieces in your pic I don’t see on the Falcon. Perhaps that panel was altered?

No, it's certain, it's a 100% match, it's just that it's been trimmed off so much that just the top section is showing. Look at the 8rad part #B30 on the actual kit, and you'll see it's the exact same shape you're describing with your line drawing and with your illustrations. The track section to the right of it is also there, but it's "complete" in mine and only the very top edge of it in the PG Falcon sidewall pic, b/c that's how much (90%-ish) of those greeblies were shaved off of the bottom section of Matilda plate. If you're noticing anything, it's probably that I placed my part #B30 "too high" on the plate so as to try to lose "as little as possible" of it when actually placing it on my build.

jcoffman,
If you wonder why many of the Falcon Builders don't provide more details and responses, it's directly related to your attitude above to both StudioKitBash, JunkPilot and others. You question many folks who give you the right answers, you knee jerk respond 'it's not it', then you find out after all their input was spot on because you didn't invest the time to actually find your own answers. If you spent more time doing the research and investigating tips, you might've received more inputs. As Tsophika mentioned, it is the correct part, you just didn't take the time to work out the trimming/orientation. Just because StudioKitBash may have gotten the part orientation wrong, you didn't look close enough to discover it is the part.

Spend some more time looking at references and working things out before judging the help from others.

If you would've just looked at the build threads/construction history that generous guys like Stu have provided out there, my own construction, and many others - you'd get a lot of answers AND you'd see parts just like the 8Rad right there on our builds. Yet you seem to refuse to leverage the work we have done.

Your attitude is also reflected in the title and content of this thread by saying "My....". It's not 'your' reference thread, it's a collation of many thousands of hours of research and dollars by others - and rather than creating a thread that is 'Everyone's', you make it sound like 'yours' and there are perceptions that you have created all these maps - even though you give vague thanks to the previous reference makers.

To all the other RPF members, respectfully, I apologize for MY 'attitude', I had to vent here because it really gets frustrating to see the lack of initiative from jcoffman, and his near daily asks to just 'tell me what this or that is'. It's somewhat exhausting and frustrating for those of us that did a lot of the measuring, investing, etc... before we reached out to just tell folks to give them the info.

Sean, I was thinking along the same lines, especially about 2 months back, however I will say,

After recently meeting John, swgeek, Tsophika, eagle1, Studio Kitbash, JSchneider in a joint virtual meet, I can now see John's approach. I only wish you could have been there along with a few others, as I know there are a few other guys that are on the cusp or well into their builds, either physically or deep in planning, and many we owe much to pioneering what we are now working towards. You being certainly one of them!
Thank you!

He doesn't mean any disrespect. He's just a bit green when it comes to this, and sometimes a bit too direct rather than diplomatic.

It was really nice to have a casual chat with all. There was some candid and frank discussion around the history and how we got to where we are today.

We asked Craig and Stu much about the likes of Ed and Doug, and faustus100, and those that came before, and there was I think a lot of respect shown for what they have done, and are doing.

I do agree however that you may need the change the name of your thread John, as Falconeering and Studio Scale in general is very much a collaborative pastime, and should always be.
And you know it.

John, do yourself a favor and have another look at Sean's thread. Especially when it comes to this area, as Stu is yet to get his waist castings on.
If you go deep on the StudioScalemodelers site you will also find a pic of Craig's waist, or part of.

This is the way....

But the top section of the 8Rad part is flat. The Bandai slopes out. It looks like a slope on the actual model to me too.
Yes, I noticed this too -- which means either:
a.) my #B30 should have been trimmed "down" from the base so that the part that meets the sidewall stars with the "sloped out" section instead of the flat section of this greeblie, or
b.) that the Bandai PG kit part shows just how much the visual/perceptual slope of this part "looks sloped out" when in fact the trimming of the Matilda plate was done at roughly the same angle as the dome curvature "sloped in" and thus causes a "flat section" to appear "sloped out" if you follow what I'm saying.

But I'm leaning towards a.) as the correct interpretation, based on close examination and others feedback, which is, as always, appreciated. I'm constantly amazed by how many "angles" of different reference photographs you need to really orient yourself to build this thing accurately, and when I make a mistake, I either make that same section over and over again (currently on my fourth Sheridan hull build!), or else I "own" my mistake as creative/artistic liberty and start quoting Han Solo all over again, "I've made a lot of special modifications to her" to acknowledge that yes, there is a difference between the original and mine, but it's a difference with which I'm happy to live.

But either way you interpret it, there is not any doubt that the greeblie ID on this area is 8rad #B30 or #B35

And hey, don't take it too hard -- at least no one on this particular comment thread is saying yours is "too small"!!!

; )

Sean,
I'm not sure exactly how to respond, but I'll try my best.

First off I've had a ton of help from lots of folks and am eternally grateful. Some has come publicly, while some has come via pm for fear of "reprisals". I think that is a sad statement on the hobby that folks feel like they can't talk in an open forum.

My "knee jerk" reactions are more of me thinking out loud. I can see how it could be interpreted that way, but after our virtual meet, I'm pretty sure those who were there know that's not my intention.

Regarding the part in question, I've looked at a ton of photos from different angles and just didn't see it. I think I have it figured out now, but I do struggle with spatial relations. (Which is great for a project like this.) Also, I was sent two different pics of that plate by two different individuals so I thought I had a legit question. I always use the original source to confirm. As discoveries will always be made after a build.

As far as looking at others builds, I mentioned in our meet that I "try" not to use those pics as I do feel like it's cheating, or using the works of others. I usually only look if I'm trying to confirm something. I did look at your build in this case, but coupled with the two pics I was sent, I thought I had a legitimate question.

Spending time looking at reference is something I've done. Like every day, for hours, for over a year. My job allows a lot of free time and I spend most of the day either on SSModelers, looking at the available pics on the web, or those that have been shared with me. I can tell you I'm putting in the work. The problem is that a lot of the scans on ssmodeler were done over a decade ago and digital photography has improved a lot since them. A lot of the scans are so dark that details are hard to make out. That's one of the reasons I started my site.

On the title of the thread, you're absolutely right on that one. That title was created over a year ago by a guy who had noooooooo idea what he was getting into. I will change it to reflect the group effort, Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I'm not sure why this couldn't have been pm, but it seems like this whole thread really bothers you. If you're upset with what I'm doing, which you totally have the right to be, then maybe just don't come in the thread, or reach out via pm.

Thanks,
John

Thanks Bjorn,
Like I said to Sean, totally right on the title of the thread. Changing that in a minute. The dude that wrote that over a year ago, had noooooo idea what he was getting into.

Thank you for using the word "green" when I think "dense" would have been much more appropriate. :)

I told you guys, that I try to not look at other build threads because I feel like I'm cheating, but maybe it is okay if avoids these conversations.

Thank again for the kind words,
John

Mate, fortunately I can see it both ways.

We can all be a bit dense at times, I certainly have my moments. Starting out here only a few years ago I was also super keen to blaze away.
I recalled you saying the other week that you were trying to not focus too much on the other threads as you thought it was cheating.

It is the path to the dark side, make no mistake. But it saves repeat questions that were raised a decade ago over the same parts which is kind of nuts to redo if the answers are there. Albeit, not in plain sight but generaly there never the less. You just have to do some digging as Sean rightfully suggested.

It takes a while to realise that all this work has already been done a few times over by the good folk that have gone before us. Sean being one of them.
And buy the good grace they have been kind enough to share huge, immense, no ridiculous amounts of bread crumbs, clues, info that will indeed help us with our own.

I realise its also a bit nuts having to work it out yourself, its just how it is with these things sometimes. After all, that is the path to the light side.

I sense good in you ;) I'm here all week...

Reached out and finally got in contact today with Alan Anderson. You may have seen some of his awesome Celebration photos of the Falcon floating around. He's also contributed a ton of the scans over at SSModelers. He's also a member here although he says he only visits about once a year. He's being very generous and allowing us to use his pics for part maps. Just a heck of a nice guy.

I asked him about the various pits, and he said he'd send me more this evening or tomorrow. He did send this shot for you evil ESB folks. LOL

I have only seen a handful of his pics through various sources and they are excellent. Thank you for reaching out to Alan!

Do you all think it will go over well with the wife if she has Millennium Falcon's in the garage, SeaLabs in the freezer, and then more Millennium Falcon's in the oven??? :

Anyone hungry for a "Millennium Falcon?"

Thought I'd break up the monotony around here for a minute! Phew! Never had a mince pie myself, but if I were going to try one it would probably be this one. LOL

Everyone's probably seen this, but it put a pretty big smile on my face so I thought I'd share...
