A Daft Trooper-(TK takes on DP!)

This is one of the best threads Iv'e come across since I've been on this forum. Just wish I would have seen it before Halloween! My first go at fiberglassing and it was a rush job but youv'e given me great references to go on!

Thank you James! Means a lot! There are many "how to" Daft Punk threads on the RPF. It gets cookie cutter after a while, my aim is complete accuracy, as close to the real group as possible. I received my intro into the prop world from the 501st, and I love the research that really goes into the costumes. I wanted to transplant that into my Daft build.

I still haven't gotten my electronics stuff from GA back yet :/

I am split either making my current Thomas HAA, RAM, or Discovery era. One day I will have them all...but right now I am leaning towards HAA to have a complete set for costuming with.

I also had an opportunity to take some studio photos with a amazing local photographer, Matthew Crowley. Check'em out:

HAA Era - Studs by TK9336, on Flickr

I definitely, definitely need to re pad my helmet. The most telling way Guy wears his helmet is that you can clearly see his neck from the front, and sides. My helmet is also too big for my size, sadly. I will eventually end up selling it to sculpt my own.

Back with some news:

I almost got a cease and desist from YSL-Paris because of the RAM Daft Punk glitter boots I made. Basically, I lost Facebook for a week (where the complaint originated from YSL thinking I was going to sell them.) So if you want a pair...make your own! That said, I am 99% sure this new glitter and glue will be much more true to the originals.

I have also reached out to a 501st seamstress in Texas who works on costumes professionally. I plan on getting new RAM tuxedos, black, gold and silver. The idea this second time around is to layer the sequins as opposed to laying a flat plane. When I made the first RAM costumes, there was less than a month and half lead time into leaving to debut at Dragon*Con 2013 (8/29/13-9/2/13). There is no rush this time, and I want to nail the looking perfectly. Plus she has worked at a tux shop and has a lot of experience working with tuxedos specifically...which is a huge plus! I don't know how much they will be, but you pay for quality. I am thinking off offering my current RAM tuxedo which is the most accurate replica that exists (correct sequins and pattern). It was custom tailored to me (I am Guy's size, 5'7" about 160lbs). So think a 40S in US suit sizes. Not perfect, but the best out there until I make my new ultimate ones. Interested? Drop me a PM.

I have also been plugging away at a Mogaui V2 Guy-Man for a friend of mine. I am also doing a pair of Volpin's gloves for him too (he is the same size as me, so I will make it to fit me and then show all of you what it looks like versus my Sorenzo lid/FIRE_WIRE gloves).

Acme 12/13 by TK9336, on Flickr

The glove pull isn't very sharp which left me to a "guesstimate" on a few cuts. Having done two pairs of gloves already it was a no-brainer, but if your just getting started...take your time, or get FIRE_WIRE's. They are far more defined and forgiving. I say that only because in my builds I like to strive for 99% accuracy and like to know it's as close as possible. If I mess up, it bugs me wayyyyyyy too much that it's not perfect (which explains why I have done things twice, and thrice over on my Daft gear.)

I do have a question and would like a second opinion from the veteran Daft Punk purists and researchers on what they think that neck guard is on Guy-Man's HAA helmet. The V2 Moguai and my own Sorenzo GM are both HAA, and I still need to add this on. Take a look. I wanna to say it's foam-

Nothing to speak of regarding my Discovery build, still all drawings and a pile of construction materials. I am tossing up ideas for my Daft Trooper helmet, and armor...right now I have three versions...but I am most excited for a twist on the Encore suits since TK armor has many highlights and geometrical shapes that would respond well to that style.

Anyways...it's cold.

Stay daft my friends.

Just read the whole thread. Awesome work and a great inspiration. I did not know, for instance, there is a paint for rubber o_O

Thanks Mizuno and Geoninja. I still haven't figured out a exact formula yet. Nothing has quite worked, fully. I am lucky I got the real deal.

Sorry guys, I am not updating as much. Trying to just get this Moguai V2/Volpin hand plates out to chrome. Almost finished.

But alas: here is a low res photo from the Harley shoot just that Riverwalk just sent me;

New RAM suit update:

I am doing the jackets myself...that's right! The old adage "if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself," is true. Thanks to help of fellow 501st'er Trent Thorton (who does a kickass, flawless Bane, Darth Vader and handmade Emperor Ming from Flash Gordon to name a few,) with help of his costuming wife fellow 501st'er Beth (Zam Wesell/Biker Scout/Princess Aura again, to name a few,) have sourced me the perfect sequins and method of constructing the Random Access Memories jackets. Without their wealth of shops, sequins and years making amazing costumes, I would never have found the perfect sequins. A full battle plan didn't fully materialize until I met the 'Real Costuming Company' on Facebook who constructed their jackets in the same vein I was thinking of doing (layered, instead of a fabric on a flat plane). After talking shop I am now just waiting on everything to arrive to start making those awesome, one of a kind jackets. Putting the sequins on there will be akin to putting hair on a Wookiee mesh suit but, oh so worth it!

Still plugging away on filling the tricky circuit panel on the Moguai V2 for my buddy. When I make my Discovery GM, I am pressure casting so those stupid pinholes don't appear. They drive me nuts!

I also have a few upcoming photoshoots with my current gear, and my buddy Cam's Volpin lid...I am not at liberty to say much, but they will be cool!

NOTE: I understand why this thread is placed in the Star Wars subgroup because of the title, but I am not making true Daft Troopers until next year for Celebration VII, so if this thread could be moved in a more appropriate place it would be appreciated! (I will make a different thread for the Daft Troopers...) Thanks mods.

Turns out it will take 80 yards of the strung sequins to make ONE jacket, along with 6 tubes of E6000. My sanity is becoming increasingly disproportional the more accurate I make these suits.

:O

Looks like Daft Punk themselves beat you to the mash up ! At least for sound check .

Now everyone can have a highly seen screen accurate helmet without the high cost of chrome !

Exactly my thoughts Jim! The grammys suits are the most affordable ones they've ever worn. You'll see A LOT of these at the cons this year.

So, I was tempted to this after the Grammys, lol!

Also, to get hyped for the Grammys, we did a for fun 'fashion' tribute shoot to the robots. Lots of fun!

Starting my sequin RAM jackets very soon!

The Daft boys killed it! 5/5, so proud of these righteous gentlerobots!

Yeah I'm working on a guy helmet in pep right now ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390863244.474912.jpg

Jim,

I don't think it be possible to do it after the chrome, because I think it would destroy the finish. Moisture destroyed the gold finish on my GM gloves, and all the work that goes into making a mold would have similar results.

Volpin just redid his Thomas mold, and FIRE_WIRE has a nice Thomas cast too. V's is bigger and FW's is smaller. If you're my height (5'7") I would recommend FW's. If your taller than 5'10" I would go with V's.

My Dragon*Con pics, my buddy Cam is 6'3" and is wearing Volpin's V2 Thomas. In the recent pics my buddy Jose is 5'11" and is wearing Volpins lid (same one). We need to get him 1.5" lifts, but you get the idea. I padded it for myself and it still looks good. All about padding.

Life casting my hands to make my RAM gloves in the coming days! I also scanned my vellum divider from the box set (the circuit pattern from the gloves) and had it re-colored (by Justice Fisher.) I am going to screen print it with metallic silver ink on black fabric. Pretty excited that things are beginning to take shape!

I have yet to get the tuxedo and start plastering it with sequins, and redo my shoes...but slowly but surely the wheels are beginning to turn. I also finally found a exacting black shirt for the RAM suits!

Proud to announce I am entering the C2E2 (biggest convention in the Midwest US, located in Chicago) with my Daft Punk Random Access Memories Redux!

Before I delve into that, here's a piece from the 2nd Annual SPS shoot here in IL: HAA Volpin V1 Thomas

SPS Photoshoot 2014 by TK9336, on Flickr

The real reason I am posting is because I have more updates for my Random Access Memories Redux I will be debuting at C2E2 here in my native Chicago in April. This time around, I've redone EVERYTHING. The only thing that isn't changing is the RAM pendants by Sorenzo. Everything else has been reduced to square one. I hope Pedro can get a cast of his lid in time, that will really send this redux sky high in terms of accuracy.

Without further ado:

Made some extra... by TK9336, on Flickr

Gloves should be totally done by the end of the month. Found the tux jackets to be converted, now just to save up for them. Progress. Hope to have both jackets done by the end of March. I still need to cast my hands to make my own RAM styled hand plates. I should have some pairs vac formed by the end of March, first week of April. Wearing a pair of hand plates sculpted by someone else has passed muster in the costume world, but making my own with fit much better, and be much more authentic to RAM, and aesthetically pleasing.

Cool man! Make sure you come say hi! I'm sure we won't be hard to spot in gold and silver sequin tuxedos!

The shoes held up just fine, I will probably tailor the pants so they are a little tighter fitting at the ankle.

I tried doing lifecasts of my hand and didn't so hot. I am ordering new alginate and instead of plaster, I will use Smooth Cast 300Q. So once that arrives I will share photos. Too ashamed of my mistake to share it in my build thread...

Tuxedos arrive Monday, or Tuesday. Excitement is definitely building!

I passed the preliminary cuts for C2E2's "Champions of Cosplay" Costume contest, so if I win anything, I'll make sure my acceptance speech is silent just like the lads!

Also, found this gem while searching Instagram.

Nothing like finding art of yourself (as Guy-Man!) Pretty cool work by Faruqi Akbar. Kudos to him.
